Alright, got it. She says so in Volume 35, File 10 (File 360 - last file of Mitsuhiko getting lost in the forest), Page 10, Panel 6.1:
あのお姉ちゃんでさえ例の事件の前には匂いがしてたのに・・・
"Even my sister... Before that certain incident, she gave off that scent..." (rough translation, but it specifically carries the meaning that it was ONLY then)
(Haibara is giving some background regarding her "smell detector" to explain how odd it is that she couldn't smell Numabuchi)

The German translation actually says the very same thing, without any mention of 'that scent' .

Well, I find it weird that two translators would both botch a translation in the exact same way. So there's gotta be a reason for this. Is there some ambiguity about the Japanese original?

How about this:
Translator A translated it wrong. Translator B doesn't know japanese, so he translated it from translator A's script.

The episode subs botched it too. In ep 290 it said, "My sister was able to catch their scent, too." It doesn't match what Haibara said either.

Edit: Abs. can you retranslate the entire manga, please? It should only be a week or two, right?  :P
