Without knowing anything else beyond that some woman with associations with the FBI thinks it is a good reason to use Amuro on a case, maybe Amuro is the son of an FBI agent and was taken in by the Black Organization? I still don't think Amuro is an Akai because he was shown in association with the Black Organization (Elena) as a child and his skin color doesn't match the apparent middle brother's (or the rest of the Akai family who is pale). Maybe the woman knew Amuro's parent and then incidentally came across Amuro as a detective and assumed that because Jodie was in Japan that he was over for the same reason and had followed in his parent's footsteps. If Conan makes the same leaps of logic, he could come to the conclusion Amuro is an embedded spy, but the conclusion is off because Conan doesn't know Amuro's history with the Black Organization. That's why Amuro tells Conan he is mistaken.
Havin a connection with the FBi would open up a new avenue for why he hates Shuuichi. Maybe Shuuichi had some involvement in whatever situation led to Amuro being left behind and adopted by the Black Organization. (Death of parent? Lots of possibilities here.)

It seems that Conan understood a meaning behind the nickname "Rei (Zero)" that we readers have not figured out yet. That seems to lead him to whatever conclusion he makes regarding Amuro's background.

Based on the pictures alone, it seems Amuro has a grudge against the FBI in general, and appears to be enjoying ribbing them. I think it is a stronger reaction than most members of the Black Org would have to the FBI. If Amuro does have FBI parents, maybe he does not know exactly what went down between them and the Organization, and blames the FBI (and maybe Shuuichi or the Akai family [maybe even daddy Akai]) for whatever happened. A confrontation with Shuuichi might clear some of that up since Amuro now knows the fake death trick. aAll that is left for Amuro now is to figure out Okiya is Akai, and Amuro already knows Okiya exists and cooperates with Conan from the cat + cold truck case.

I'll think about all this some more when there are more translations.

I am not sure what is going on, either, Chek. We will have to wait, especially since that is all speculation without enough hard evidence for my liking.

He may not, but this is unusual for him and unusual for Gosho to draw is my point. The sudden shift for this chapter jarred me on some level. His design is the Japanese eye design like Sera, even if he's not full Japanese. We don't see random chapter shift involving Sera suddenly having that different design.

I'm not sure the eye designs split along japanese/non Japanese. Gosho has two eyestyles: the cute eyes and the serious eyes. Amuro changes between the two and I don't think that the serious eyes are exclusive to foreign characters. That is worth confirming by looking at the police and case suspects and such.

Edit: I bet the solution to the case has to do with the fact that in America a check by the answer means correct, while in japan that means incorrect. Circling an answer doesn't mean incorrect in America, but it might be used that way. Some sort of misunderstanding ensues like maybe a diligent student commits suicide because he thinks he got a terrible grade and the teacher was mocking him with flowers.

Perhaps Conan thinks that Amuro may be another mole because he's saved Conan's life so many times?

Conan doesn't know that Elena called Amuro "零-kun" (零, 'rei' meaning 0). What the kid in front of the elevator in chapter 888 said was ゼロ (romanisation: 'zero') which is another Japanese word for 0. The nickname Amuro claims to have isn't 零, it's ゼロ. Both refer to the same number and mean the same thing, but I feel this is a distinction that's gonna be important later on.

Well, aside from the obvious "reference to Amuro Ray" thing, do we know if Conan and Amuro use Zero and Rei respectively in the Japanese version of this file? The Chinese raw would translate both to Ling, but if there's a difference, that could be why Amuro's like "You hyped up and have misunderstood the situation, Conan."

The reason for Amuro bearing a grudge against FBI could be like Jack Connery from Magic Kaito Vol 4

Like I said at the hospital the only 0 that was used was ゼロ. And Conan isn't aware of Elena calling Amuro 零. At least I don't see how he would be. I would say it's likely that Conan drew some conclusion from the incident that had Amuro say his nickname is ゼロ, and as a result thinks Amuro's one of the good guys. But Amuro's telling him he misunderstood something about the nicknames thereby implying that Conan's wrong.

I think this is why Conan starts by saying "Come here for a bit, Zero..., ehm, I mean Amuro-niichan." He's saying "Yeah, Amuro, I know what that nickname means." And Amuro's responce is essentially saying "No, Conan, you got the nickname bit all wrong."

Conan's probably saying ゼロ there. He wasn't around when Amuro was called 零. I'm guessing whatever reasoning mistake Conan has made here he wouldn't have made if he'd been aware - as the reader is - that there's someone who's referred to Amuro as "Rei-kun" in the past.

ok so the nickname has a huge importance to understand Amuro's true motives...or at least the way Elena called him in the past will play a big role in the confrontation with Amuro.I'm just wondering if Elena mentionned a Rei kun in her tapes, which would be useful for Ai and Conan to know.

At this point though we can't tell if that is due to Amuro's own motivations or in reference to the promise Vermouth mentions he keep back during the Detective's Nocturne cases. Seeing as how Vermouth is very protective of both Shinichi and Ran she would make sure to attempt to keep them shielded. I do agree though that
Spoiler:
Conan may have thought Amuro was hinting at something with his nickname enough for Conan to drop his guard for a second and it appears to have backfired on Conan (Even Jodie had the "?" look when Conan went over to Amuro).

Long story short: We have no idea what's going on for sure with Amuro.

But Conan approaching Amuro like this, in the middle of a case with a bunch of people around no less, is rather foolish, even if the misunderstanding isn't something that's going to bite Conan in the ass.
