I agree with yume_no_meitantei about if the 30sec in anime was right and also in the anime even before Rena started the bomb timer, Gin and Vodka left a few sec already so its pretty possible. I think the anime is pretty precise and more detailed than the manga and i believe that to be true unless they will make Akai alive in anime and not in manga... is that even possible...
They did it with Miyano Akemi, Haibara's sister she made it out alive in the anime but dead in the manga although they had to "fix" it later so they can actually introduce Haibara.
Never underestimate animators ability to screw up the plot.
But it still ended up the same... Miyano Akemi died.
Oh well, if they did change the anime from the manga like maybe Akai is alive in anime and not in manga it would be more interesting for me... I'd love to see a variety of how Conan will take down BO with Akai on anime and without him in manga...

There's no doubt in my mind that he is alive, is he Okiya?? is he Esuke?? I don't know, but he is somewhere, waiting to finish the plan he probably set up with Conan.
Oh contrare Rellik. This explains everything! I can see him with his hair slicked back and one loose curl escapes from it... This also could explain how he can shoot so darn good with his super eyes and grip. And just to be on the safe side, he could have gone through that explosion without getting a scratch. Leaving him to turn into Clark Kent (Okiya) safely, and infultrate BO. When he finds out who the boss is just kill him with his laser vision. And the whole world will be saved from BO's tyranny (aliens taking over humans)!
This leaves the question though, what is his Kryptonite?

But Conan does not behaves like he is really dead. At the end of chapter 621, when Eisuke tells Conan that there have been a death at the FBI, Eisuke says: "But If you haven't heard about it... then it must be allright" And Conan has his knowing expression on his face and thinks "Yeah, ..it's alright." (taken out of a scanlation, so I hope the translation is correct)
Since he knows about Akai's meeting and the incident because Jodie-san was borrowing his cellphone for fingerprints, I don't think that he would act that way if Akai has really given his live for the covering of Mizunashi Rena. He certaily would be more angry and depressed than he actually is. So I believe that Akai have been able to use some kind of trick he and Conan already presented to Eisukes Sister in the Hospital, because they both have been expecting exactly this situation.

IMHO conan up until that moment still dont know about Akai Whereabouts
That´s what Gosho wants you to think, just like when no one expected that Akai and Conan made a plan so that the BO recover Kir, and was all planned by both secretly. I think that they expected Gin to suspect the recovery of Kir and thought of something up, remember the story is always like that. Moreover that Conan says that everything´s alright.

Exactly. They planned that "save kir" plan, so why can't they plan another one secretly. They had me fooled lat time
I don't believe that Akai is dead. That guy is too smart to walk in a trap without preparing anything.
Coincidely, when Akai "dissapeared" from the scene, Subaru Okiya appeared.
I admit I want to think that Okiya Subaru is Akai.
But there is Ai's reaction the first time she met Subaru, that reaction which tells her that a BO was near by.
The manga and the anime made me think that Subaru is BO's new member Bourbon (making Subaru drinking Bourbon in Shinichi's house).
I thought that maybe Akai infiltrated the BO again with another identity.
But the again, this is what I want to bvelieve...
dont forget wen Ai's reaction is weth Akai is the same as a BO menber in a eposde thay show this wen Akai is stalking them she reaction just the same so i thinking his not dead

Huh...
Exactly! The LEAST akai could do was wear a bullet proof vest. >.< and a bullet proof hat with a blood pack in it.
the trigger probably was in his pocket :]

I can't see Akai agreeing to switch his body with an innocent's, unless that was part or Kir's side project and that's why she said 'don't think badly of me'. I donno, I just can't see that happening, but I really want to get to the bottom of this.
Akai has to move an adult sized body (hidden from view) with lack of movements (Akai will get caught if he move out of the car) into the position he is lying from (and with the body's hands in the pocket as well) in 15 seconds. (seriously 15 seconds ain't that long) - try looking at a clock and imagine Akai doing what i just said.
Then what if the body was placed above him(strapped inside the roof of the car covered with something to blend, remember they did not show much inside the car) or below the chairs? Then all Akai needed to do is move aside/get out and trigger the so that the body would just fall(or something else) to the chair.
FYI there's a different clue in the anime. When Akai fell from the headshot, his head was splattered with blood, but when Kir was placing the bomb, it was clean. And when it was showed in the news, the door of the car was closed.
