They are managed with puzzling incompetence, whose successful artists are all ones from yesteryear. As they continue to retire and leave the brand, GIZA is being left only the new artists that they're launching and none of them are working out. Even popular artists like Rina Aiuchi had a lot of difficulty selling records in her later years unless the song was a Conan tie-in song. GIZA bets everything on the Conan tie-ins because this contract is just about the only platform they have left, unfortunately or not. It should also be noted that Caos Caos Caos's Conan tie-in only sold 1,826 copies in its debut week.
Here's a short list of GIZA's actual artists, not including all of the random ones, though some may be missing as they have so many phantom labels it's impossible to keep up with them all:
• BREAKERZ
• Caos Caos Caos
• Chicago Poodle
• doa
• GARNET CROW
• grram
• HAZZE
• Inagi Shino
• Mai Kuraki
• Morikawa Natsuki
• Oozaki Yuki
• Sa-asa
• Ueda Marie
• WAR-ED
Haven't heard of most of them? Don't worry--most of Japan hasn't either.
Here are the ones that actually sell records:
• BREAKERZ
• GARNET CROW
• Mai Kuraki
Here are the ones that don't, with last charting positions for the ones who are well-known enough to have such information readily available:
• Caos Caos Caos (Last single charted at #176 during debut week)
• Chicago Poodle (Last single charted at #46 during debut week)
• doa (Last single charted at #52 during debut week)
• grram (Debut single charted at unknown but very low position during debut week)
• HAZZE (Only released one unsuccessful mini-album)
• Inagi Shino
• Morikawa Natsuki
• Oozaki Yuki
• Sa-asa (Third album, released in February, charted at #284 during debut week)
• Ueda Marie
• WAR-ED
Mai Kuraki and GARNET CROW both still have fanbases from back when GIZA actually had some sort of semblance of promoting their artists. Daigo from BREAKERZ is a popular idol, but apart from those three, all of the GIZA-managed artists are in the hole, unfortunately. Some of them actually have talent, too, but they aren't promoted or managed well and they end up with no career at all. doa is a good group, but their real strength is simply that the band's bassist Akihito Tokunaga is such a good composer and arranger (he works on a litany of GIZA's songs--you'll see his name repeated many times in the credits to Conan themes). One thing that keeps GIZA afloat is that one of their subsidiaries, Vermillion Records--the label that B'z operates by and for themselves (as a result of writing/recording all of their own music and having control over all facets of its release)--is still very successful, or otherwise who knows where this company would be right now. Let's just hope that the people running these other GIZA careers stay out of the B'z offices.
GIZA often launches new labels that are really just the same old people from GIZA doing the same thing they've always done (like when Mai Kuraki was moved to "NORTHERN MUSIC"), but do so in order to make things seem fresh. Until they get their act together, you can, sadly, expect these numbers to repeat quite a bit.
