Vermoth was disguess as Dr.Araide Tomoaki, and they think Jodie was Vermounth and what happend with the Araide-family was that Vermount was going to kill them, but they was in a car accident, the sunk, but they was wering oxygen and surrived.  (sorry for my bad english)

The story states 3 years ago, so if we assume that Shinichi is 17, then they moved when he was 14 years old.
Part of the reason why he doesn't want to leave Japan is because he wants to stay behind to carry out his own investigations on BO.. and most importantly, he doesn't want to leave Ran
