APTX stands for...?

Postby LittleDragonfly » January 5th, 2012, 7:09 am

During 12 years spent reading DC, I've always thought APTX is supposed to be Apotoxin.
Now, looking up the APTX 4869 page on Japanese Wikipedia, it says Apoptoxin.
I'm pretty sure APTX is pronounced and written in Katakana as APOTOKUSHIN.
AAAAAAnd, Heiji called the drug Ahou-toxin ;D

What EXACTLY does APTX mean? Which one of the 4 above is the most accurate? *Ahem, not the last two, but for just-for-fun's sake~...*

Apoptoxin. I kept mispronouncing it too, but the process it instigates is apoptosis.

That may be, but the drug itself is called Apotoxin. I just got done watching an episode where Ai talked about it in great detail, and that's what she called it.

It's Apoptoxin, as confirmed in later episodes after being spelled out in English. Before, people were not sure if it was "Apo" or "Apop" and as such the second "p" was sometimes left off.

Jd- is right. It's Apoptoxin as in Apoptosis. It's basically "Apoptosis" and "toxin" smashed together into one word. It happens a lot when English words get borrowed into Japanese.

No it is canon. Heiji calls the Apotoxin "Ahoutoxin" in the English Teacher VS Great Western Detective case (episodes 277 and 278 of the anime and files 341-343 of the manga).

It's 'apoptoxin,' but the second p is silent, hence getting katakanised as apotokushin. "Apotoxin" is an early fansub mistake that spread to the current days -- I think even DCTP's movie intro subs still use it :/

And in case you're wondering, apoptoxin is a real word, not something Aoyama made up.
