Bwahaha, ok now I definitely have to rewatch it.
Didn't like it all when I watched it for the first time yesterday, but that might just be because I was hungover and found it a wee bit hard to conecntrate. And there were way too many cringe-worthy action scenes in it for my taste.

First of all I want to thank DCTP for all their hard work, and want you guys to know I really appreciate what you guys do. Now on to the hate:

I found the whole movie to be pretty awful. It lacked any suspense and overall just didn't even feel like part of Detective Conan except it had the same characters(and even the characters personalities seemed slightly different.) There wasn't much of a case and it was pretty obvious what was going to happen, even the "twist" where Mizuki was involved I had pinned from when we find out her sister was killed. Anyone with a dead relative is automatically involved in some way. Not to mention the entire movie didn't even make sense. Why would he blow up an entire dam when he could've just gotten some diving gear? Based on the way the movies have been going from 11 and on, I'm not really looking forward to 16. No offense to DCTP, but you guys went beyond over hyping this movie and in the end made me dislike it even more because I was actually expecting it to be good.

And Conan's whole "words are swords," speech was just annoying. He really needs to step down from his pedestal. Who is he to say something like that to the detective boys? And I guess he's never heard the phrase, "sticks and stones may break my bones, but word will never hurt me." I could go into so many other things I disliked about this movie but it would take forever.

Also a translation note: When they're at the clinic because Genta ate too much, Fuyumi says "soo, ichinenseika," to which Genta replies "desu." It just has "desu" in the subs(which might confuse people who aren't familiar with Japanese) when something like "that's right" or "yeah" would've been more clear, as he was saying "desu" in agreement, much the same way you would say "soodesu." There were a couple of other minor things I noticed while watching, but of course I have forgotten them now. And I'm not trying to sound arrogant but I'm not just some self-taught guy, I'm currently minoring in Japanese so I know my stuff.

That was intentional, and specifically done at a translator's request. Desu is also a popular internet meme, so it was a mini easter egg from us. Our translators all have Japanese experience ranging from 5 to 12 years, so we know what we're doing

Why did Conan pick the owl as a gift? And when he was on the phone with Ran he wrote down the list of gifts in the snow and said "what the hell?". What did he realize?

1. That is apparently something we the viewers need to figure out ourselves. Why do you think he picked the owl? Why did he look at the words funny? :)
My theory - buns are perishable and he has no use for another coffee mug. An owl sculpture is at least a beautiful thing to look at. And all three choices happened to be animal-themed.

They hype the movie because they know a lot of people expect it (which is obviously true, given the amount of people connected every year on the forum at the time of the release) even if it isn't necessarily awesome. I doubt them hyping the release had any link to how good (or bad) they considered the movie to be.

man, you got to my pet peeve, which i had tried not post about. that was irritating and (this isn't just in the movie of course) every time i see "ayumi [first person] _____" i want to tear my eyeballs out. dctp is better than about that kind of thing than most groups, but such appeasement still rankles.

also, the hype thing is sort of a joke/cliche. it wasn't meant to imply that the movie would be awesome, just that it being translated and released is epic (true).

Foremost: Our hyping of the movie is what we do every year, and it's what we do for every major project. It is not based on the perceived quality of the movie or even some quality consensus within the staff. The release itself is what matters, and that's why we very rarely offer opinions on the movies and other big projects until a fair amount of time has passed and everyone has had time to form their own opinions. The actual hype is not created by us: our fellow fans do that every year, from all over the world. All we do is try to make the release of the movie in English into an event not entirely unlike what you get from looking forward to the movie coming to theaters, because that's what people expect and respond to. Apologies if you actually think us hyping our releases is, somehow, us saying that the release in question is the best thing of all time, but that is your own prerogative and not our intent. Even if people ultimately do not consider a movie to be particularly great, we do want people to be excited that they are downloading a DCTP release and do want them to trust us to always deliver on their expectations as far as our work goes.

The moral of the story: A new Conan movie will always be something for the vast, vast majority of the fanbase to get hype about.

Secondly: I don't think such input on the translation is really necessary. Our translators know this movie inside and out and every line's translation is deliberate and correctly done as intended. What you are likely referring to is personal preference, and our translators have over a decade of experience translating and know how to convey these lines to an English audience. I stand by every line of the translation. You may disagree with some of the edits or the style of the editing, of course, but the translation itself is sound from start to finish (all 1,800 lines and 22,000 words of it).

I've worked on more English episodes, movies, and OVAs than anyone else, and I am certain that the translation itself is as good as one could ever be for this movie. There's much, much more to translating than picking out words from a sentence, finding the English equivalent, and trying to mash them altogether. There's an art to conveying the original tone and character of the lines along with the intent and meaning, and that art was not neglected here--it was embraced, and spectacularly so if you don't mind my saying.

If he let it out via his belt, theres not enough force, if he launched it via belt then his power shoes, he doesnt have enough strength and space (he cant even move!), well if he did these impossible things, why didnt he do it earlier? i thought at first he would change to shinichi temporarily and Ran's hunch about shinichi in the village came true! anyways, thanks for the answers!

If he let it out via his belt, theres not enough force, if he launched it via belt then his power shoes, he doesnt have enough strength and space (he cant even move!), well if he did these impossible things, why didnt he do it earlier? i thought at first he would change to shinichi temporarily and Ran's hunch about shinichi in the village came true! anyways, thanks for the answers!
