Shinichi was a very popular football player in high school so naturally he'll get along well with his other teammates. And there was that time when Shinichi returned to Teitan High as Conan and saw his old classmates - I'd hardly call him a loner; they were just not presented in the show because they're not really that relevant.

As for Shiho, well that may be true - her sister has been trying to get her out of the books. But as to why a lot of people 'hate' the DB... I believe it really has nothing to do with Shinichi and Shiho being so-called loners - they just get on some people's nerves (I can't relate to them much anymore so they tend to get on mine).

Well, maybe I just don't realize that there's some off-screen friends of Shinichi.
I'll always see him as a loner when he's on screen. It seems difficult for him to believe in someone. He always want to do anything on his own.
I think Heiji did the same as DB. He have force his friendship to Conan and I think it's good things. If Heiji didn't do that, I think they won't become friend. Maybe just an acquaintance.
If DB get on some people's nerves, they can skip it. But they will lose some of Ai and Conan's character development.

They do that by now, right? When was the last time they were talking about treasures? The warehouse case or Kirins Horn? Well, in that case there really were treasures, right?
I wonder how much people skipped the DBs cases. They are nothing like they were in the beginning. I miss some aspects (The less "shy" and more tomboyish Ayumi for example) from back then, though they also had made a lot of progress.

and when Ai's involved she'll give a long complicated reason not to go and they follow, she gives them a simple reason they stay or she just lets them do whatever. and yet when Conan would use the same reason Ai does to tell them to stay they obey her but not him. so for those reasons i'd hate to see them appear in a BO case.

Well, that might be because of what was discussed already. Conan being a role model and his double-standards.

Conan: You wait here while I run ahead and face all the danger myself!

Haibara: You wait here, while I will also wait here to avoid the danger!

Would you listen to an advise from someone who does ignore their own advice? Or to someone who is giving a good example by behaving like they expect you to behave as well?

About the BO... seriously, which character would listen to Conan not to meddle with them if they met by chance? Heiji might be a better Detective than the DBs but despite knowing how dangerous the BO is I can't imagine him not following Gin if he saw him in the streets somewhere...

remember i said i was watching the anime and i'm currently rereading the old cases too. so while they probably don't act like that now at the point i'm at in the show that's how they act. and i'm not of those idiots that skip 'filler' episodes just because it has the DB in it. i'm at the missing granny episode in season 10 and like it. but i will admit some are real snoozers like that hair dresser episode since you could see the killer an ocean away.

for the advice parents do that alot too so should we not listen to them?

as for the BO i'd doubt anyone would pass following them. not even Takagi and Sato and the rest of the police since they are shady folks. i'd just hate to see the DB get involved since they are still a little reckless but not as much as they used to be. and i know that if they had to meet up with any one of them it should be Rena or Vermouth.

There is also an cannon case with a "hair dresser" where you could see the killer a mile away (with Eri as her alibi).
I like the differences in cases. The usual "four persons = 1 dead, 3 suspects" format gets old after a while. And the DBs cases are usually what mixed it up.
As I said, I also like the "treasure hunt" and "rescue" cases. A bit more danger/suspense and a bit more action at the cost of having a less complex mystery is a fine trade-off in my opinion.

But Conan is the "same age" as the DBs.
Parents at least use the "it's only for adults" (like alcohol or tobacco) or "you are still too young for it" (certain films/games). However, Conan can't do that. Or if he does, he at least has to follow his own advise.

Rena? How far are you with the story? Though... nevermind.
About Vermouth: She had no scruples of burning Jodie in her house when she was still a child. Not sure what Vermouth would do. She might let them go, since they are Shinichi's/Conan's friends. Or maybe keep them as a way to put pressure on Haibara (or Conan). Or we would need someone really saving the DBs from her...

whats really bad to me is when theres only 1 suspect. wheres the fun in figuring out if you already know who it is. i like those alternernate stories since those are still mysteries but a different kind.

i'm at the latest chapter i'm just watching the show for the first time and rereading the older cases. i believe Rena was codenamed Kir. since shes undercover like Akai she won't hurt them unless she knows Gin or someone else in the group is watching/listening. Vermouth just doesn't seem dangerous to me.

Nowadays, Detective Boys cases are like blaa.....  >:( They're just simply wasting our time  >:(

I really miss the old DB cases (I mean the manga cases, not AO), but not because that I like DB, it's just that those cases were very interesting. There were many mysteries in earlier DB cases (not like today's), such as the Haunted House case, Library Murder case, Old Castle Case... It was even more interesting when sometimes DB cases are mixed with BO arc (The Bus Hijacking Case)...

Whatever you say the manga is still better and it's also canon :P I'm just pulling your legs (mostly) guts but I don't want to derail the thread any longer.

Back to topic, then, I believe the visible reliability and realization of Conan's skills is a bit of character development on the children's part. It's logical enough for them to not listen to someone who looks as old as them, yet commanding them as though he were an adult/older than them (Which he is, but they don't know that.)

The fact that Haibara follows her own advice may be part of why she's generally listened to. But I suspect how Conan acts towards adults has some bearing on the Detective Boy's attitude towards him. We don't see Haibara acted as childish as Shinichi most of the time. Not to mention, Haibara often seems older than Shinichi (That she is, although not by much if we believe that she's 18). She's closer to an adult presence than a teenage boy who appears to be a child to the kids. In some ways, Shinichi is slightly immature (most notably early on in the series, when the situation was not as serious. That was when the kids had the least respect for him, I imagine), but it's natural, with him being in his teens.

Detective Boys.... rock. They are the cutest, sweetest children and they are WAY smarter than I was at that age. I understand why somebody would hate them but they're KIDS and they DO STUPID THINGS. (I'm sorry. I LOVE children. I LOVE babysitting and all of it. They DB are SO CUTE! X3)

And has anybody noticed that Shounen Tantei Dan in initials are STD? (Just like the Black Organization is BO! XD) I'm sure SOMEBODY has! XD

Well.. in my opinion.. I don't really hate DB.. I just don't like them.. As the other people said, they're a bit annoying.. But there are also time that they could become really useful.. But most of the time, I don't like them.
