Forced plot device? If you mean volume 42, that wasn't totally forced out of nowhere, because Aoyama showed us Ran reacting to Jodie's pictures previously, and even had Ran explain her actions and suspicions in the follow up. It doesn't seem unreasonable that Ran would want to spy on Jodie after she couldn’t get Jodie to answer the door, and the trunk being open isn't that much of a coincidence (not like that volume 62 fake Shin'ichi nonsense, anyway… sheesh, at least have Haibara say she's read Poe's Purloined Letter to explain the mislabeled cure, and I'll forgive most of it).

I wonder if we'll get more really arbitrary stuff like 62 if Aoyama thinks people don't appreciate the set-up and denouement of the big confrontation in 42… That would be sad, and truly arbitrary writing would be the one thing that would make me stop following the series so closely…

Well I guess that's true because all the girls in the Gosho universe will crawl into trunks of suspected bad guys xD (they're all crazy).  They will also jump out of said drunk and locate the damsel in distress even though -technically- she wasn't suppose to hear what anyone was saying (but maybe she did, that's the only logical explanation I can think of).  Not to say I don't like that scene, it's my favorite episode afterall xD.  Ran was so cool in that one (she goes whoosh) <3.

Yeah the fake Shinichi thing with Shinichi swinging through the trees like a monkey even though he has a cold...*cough*.

Ran probably couldn't hear what they were saying, but she could definitely hear the gunshots (Jodie shooting away Vermouth's gun holster, Calvados shooting Jodie). From the top of the car, Ran could see Vermouth pointing the gun at Haibara.

ETA: I doubt Haibara/Shiho will die unless she's killed trying to protect Ran. Ran on the other hand... it seems very likely Conan will eventually lure her into a situation she can't kick her way out of, regardless of whether she knows his secret identity*, if she hasn't already been doomed from the time she saved Vermouth in New York**.

*  (Ran checking on Conan after this dialogue seems a pretty obvious reminder to us that it isn't just about his curiosity and his life.)
** (Vermouth's nickname for her is potentially ironic given what happened to the Golden Apple angel after Ran saved that angel's would-be murderer.)

Okay given she's Ran (she's worse then Conan) and jumping out from relative safety in to a rain of bullets isn't abnormal .  But even then the logical thing to do is to wait for the police who she called when she heard the bullets.  The only reason that I could think of is that she somehow knew someone is in danger and in need of her protection (?) outside.  How?  Probably ESP xD.  It wouldn't be too weird to say she sensed Ai-chan was in danger at this point.  But then Ran is always a bit weird around Ai.

If she saw Ai from the roof of the car, wouldn't that mean she also saw Chris Vineyard? 

Lol I was thinking the same thing when I heard her codename xD, Sharon sure knows how to chose codenames for people she likes!  But then Ran is also most likely to play "poor damsel in distress" after Haibara (she already does in the movies =_=) so it's strangely appropriate?  Iunno.  I share your views when it comes to Ran's mortality rate, I think its going down even faster then Shinichi's.  They both like jumping into bear pits and she's missing the super brains xD (and the knowledge that she's not exactly safe).  But then that can be said about the Shonen Tantei.

I think it's probably more that Ran took that long to decide whether what she really heard were gunshots (might have taken the second shot to convince her), get in contact with someone in the police who could trust that she's not a prankster, then decide whether it would be better to wait for the police or leap out to see if anyone needed to be protected (or have bleeding wounds staunched, for that matter).

Before the shots, she was probably just thinking about trying to be sneaky, waiting until she couldn't hear people near the car before getting out.

Heh, obviously I can't argue that the exact timing wasn't convenient for the sake of reader/watcher excitement/suspense, but I don't think it was particularly implausible.

She might just be planning to eavesdrop (in case Jodie went out for a "secret meeting") to know what connection Jodie has with Shinichi. She didn't expect that it would end that way. Just mere coincidence, but she served her purpose well.

I remember he was a friend of Chianti and Korn; his death'd be the reason why the two hate Vermouth. Though I wonder why he'd die loyally for the Org. I don't think the story of "stray" children being adopted by "someone" applies here, that'd appear corny to me
