If you were in Ran's position, you would be crying everyday. So suck it up! Sure, she didn't live in an organization, but it's like comparing two unrelated things.

Cry every day? Pfft... I definitely won't cry everyday just because my parents are divorced (I'd rather have them divorced rather than seeing them fighting everyday [if I were Ran]).
The rest I wanted to say, Dus already went ahead of me. :().

Er... actually Haibara and Ayumi have more of basis for a relationship than Conan and Ayumi in my opinion, when she's older of course...
If you think about it there's quite a few parallels between the Shinichi-Ran dynamic and the Haibara-Ayumi one... but this place isn't for discussing this so... back to the topic~!
I think what some of the others are trying to say is that Ran is a fairly typical Japanese girl, if it weren't for Shinichi her life would be pretty average. So, what I think is that Aoyama tries to get us to empathise with her as the situations he puts her in are usually much more believable and realistic to the audience. The crying is to show that she still cares about these sorts of things, she still feels sorry for murder victims and their families despite the fact that others like Shinichi and Haibara try to close themselves off from that. It represents that she still cares about others despite what she's seen people do and that she doesn't feel any shame in expressing it. I think that's a large part of why Shinichi likes her...

True, Ran might be more easy on the water works than other characters, but I prefer that over her not showing any kind of weakness (if you think of the crying as weakness) at all. It's a nice edge to that perfect "angel" image of hers. After all, characters with flaws are more entertaining to read about than those without.

If you think sympathy is a real weakness, then yeah, you'd probably be annoyed by Ran.  But what's the problem with being empathetic?  Besides, she really doesn't cry that often, she just cries a lot in comparison to other (much more stoic) characters.  She's cried a few times because she misses and is worried about Shinichi (and she probably knows she's not being told the full story), when she's been sick, when she had to tell everyone her favorite teacher is a murderer, and when a person died in an incredibly gruesome way right in front of her, probably being one of the first deaths she'd ever seen.
Also, remember that Shinichi grew up going with his dad to crime scenes.  He's seen dead bodies since he was little.  Ran's only been going to crime scenes since Conan came and forced himself into them.

I'm curious to read what the unedited version is xD.  Oh Ranger-kun <3

Back to what I said a few pages ago.  To me, I think Ran is always smiling (to the point where if she was a real person I would be scared LOL).

And err she gets along fine with Kogoro and Eri.  I don't really recall her going bawww to her mom or dad, or feeling particularly down after her little schemes don't work.  In fact they seem to make her more determined...and painfully obvious lol.  She knits and shops with her mom.  She yells and threatens to kill her dad, painfully, with her bare hands.  She happily sets them up again and again because to her expert-reading-everyone-but-Shinichi-telepaphy-skills sense that they're still crazy about each other.  And hey I think it's working quite well.

She cries around Conan because he brings down her defenses.  And this is over some time.  In the beginning even Conan who's living with her couldn't tell she misses Shinichi or feels sad at all.  Sonoko thinks Ran is so strong because Ran doesn't cry or look sad on Valentines day.  The facade of her "strong face" is broken in secret, with Conan hiding behind a door.  Ran has a high fever and no one even notices (except Conan, of course /facepalm).  Shinichi couldn't figure out that she actually likes him (/doublefacepalm over and over) because of the non-reaction she has to him.  But even in that "non-reaction" she still laughs, cries, and Ran SMASH (tm) around him without holding back at all.

As for Ran crying during cases, err someone's kinda dead-not peacefully.  As for Ran crying about ghost, she's terrified of things she can't snap in half with Karate /shrug.

She seems to start tearing up the most when she finally meets Conan's eyes.  (cue meet Akai on the street scene + White day scene)

Edit: woah now that I think about it, who brought this back from the grave o_o?

Hey, I have an idea, let's have a THIS SUCKS / NO THIS SUCKS / NO YOU / NO YOU argument for a couple pages, that will really be great. - Ingmar

Dunno who raise this but what kirite said/edit are just true! So DON'T HATE RAN! Try to understand her! And you will understand why Shinichi loves her so much than hating her just because of very simple reason that she cries too much! Oh c'mon! She's just a human,I mean anime..its not her fault! Tsk!

Oh! Thank you so much~! X3 to you..(who?) who raise this thread!

P.S. Don't hate Ran! Understand Conan! :D
