Ran's character traits

Postby Baritsu Master » April 27th, 2011, 2:23 pm

I've heard some people (not necessarily on this forum) claim that Ran's chief ability and purpose is her use of karate.  I think she is an amazing character, and a heroine in the grand tradition.  Where would Richard be without her?  Where would Conan be without Ran to keep him from running headlong into situations? I think she often propels the story. She is smart enough to capture the interest of Shinichi. She is loyal, and demonstrates the best elements of Bushido.  What character traits would you add to this list?

Well, she has a lot of good character traits, though she shares them with many other (female) DC characters, like for example Satô and Ayumi. Those traits include:

- compassion
- loyalty
- strong sense for justice
- courage
- determination

Though... sometimes she mysteriously looses those traits when she plot calls for it. ::)

I like how you use the Japanese names for all the characters, then randomly call Kogoro "Richard" :P

I might be wrong, but I believe that Ran also has some of these traits:

-Honest/Genuine
-Slight lack of confidence (She seems rather confident when it comes to Karate, but when it comes to something that is not her field (ie. deduction), she lacks confidence. Although this can be a result of having a childhood friend as brilliant as Shinichi is)
-Imaginative (To some extent. Unlike many people, she's open minded/imaginative enough to even consider the possibility of Shinichi being shrunk)
-Sensitive, emotional (We've seen this several times, and she does get worked up over small things every so often)
-can be logical and intelligent--emotions don't stop her from thinking either
-dependable, responsible/has a strong sense of duty--She cares for her father after her mother left, and even when other people don't care where Conan has gone, she still goes out of her way to find him and keep him out of trouble. She also bothers to clean Shinichi's house when he has not shown up for such a long time.

She's also a bit of a peacemaker, being someone who seems to dislike conflict. We've seen her trying to mend her parents' relationship several times. Ran also makes a great deal of effort to build meaningful, instead of shallow, relationships with people. For instance, she didn't want to use Sonoko's money for the wrong reasons, since she wants to be a friend to Sonoko, not someone who would use Sonoko simply due to the fact that she is rich.

In addition, she has a tendency to look at the general overview of things/situations, causing her to miss small details. This is likely why I believe that she is unable to discover Conan's identity after many tries--when Conan fools her, she misses the small details that refute what Conan claims, causing her to believe that Conan does not equal Shinichi.

She has many good traits, but some that are not exactly the best traits. But that's what makes Ran a realistic character, in some ways. I believe that she is a fairly well rounded character.

She has a blind faith in Shinichi.

When does she loose these?
I really like Ran because she's not so...independent as some of the heroines I read about (at least here in the US).  She's still vulnerable, not so much of a "I don't need help, I don't need a man, I don't need anyone but me" type character.  I guess I'm trying to say that she's not "Super Ran" and I really like that.
I know it's already been said, but she's really dependable.  That's probably one of the reasons Shinichi's so attracted to her: he sees these people backstabbing their friends, killing their lovers, etc, but Ran always solidly there for him.  I just think it's really sweet.  (Yeah, I'm sorta a sap.)

Yeah Kogoro, did you read this one?

Ran still strikes me as being a Libra.  She seems to have Libra-ish traits.

You don't like independant women? :o
I don't know what is wrong at being independant... ::)

For me Ran looks like all the female heroines of japanese mangas...that's why I don't feel something special about her...
anyway she's a nice character^^

I chalk that up to her being a teenager, and the person she has spent the most time with in her entire life just up and stops being around.

But that type of character trait for a heroine is too mainstream.

I pretty much like both characters, but I had a preference for Ai before. However, now I like Ran more given what Haibara has become. The Ai I like is lonely, depressed and suicidal.  ;D

Ran has seen her parent's divorce, her father become a drunk, and her boyfriend disappear. Tough life.
