Weather or not it makes things better That's a different case, he's the main character so a needless romance is to be expected but also it does technically add motivation to the character and work as a plot device from time to time. Also, Gosho addressed DC as a romantic comedy.

Though technically, no he doesn't need one either.

Weather or not it makes things better That's a different case, he's the main character so a needless romance is to be expected but also it does technically add motivation to the character and work as a plot device from time to time.

That is not what I mean. I mean, if Haibara doesn't need a romantic interest... then that means she doesn't need Shinichi (considering you are a fan of this pairing)

Oh that, well it's a case of relevance. Ai was a knew character who had something to due with the main plot and could relate to Conan on a level the others couldn't. Also, it was just a nice development from both sides.

It was relevant to what's going on an made sense/made something interesting since it was actual competition with Conan. It felt like something was happening at a comfortable pace but with real conflict of trust from both sides.

Comparing mixing the main character with a main character and a main character with random guy from another series is just weak.

He is not random. And it's not from another show... he appeared in Detective Conan more than once (and Magic Kaito has been merged with DC anyway )... we only saw of him a little, we still don't know lot of him.
And that doesn't change the fact that you said Haibara doesn't need a love interest.

It was plot twist that he turned out to be with Kobayashi. That's completely random

She doesn't need one, but since her and Conan wasn't a "ohey [3 chapters later] *love* [3rd chapter ends] *still life*" and since it had relevance to the plot (was pretty nice on its own), it didn't come off as a distraction (though it might have been ).

And being in a few crossover episodes doesn't make you from the same series, it's like having Sentai Rangers get together.
