I was wondering if Japan had any restrictions on how old the readers/viewers of conan are? some episodes are childish but then others again are very confusing for kids i'd say - And just looking back at the first episodes rollercoster where a whole head is ripped off is not very childfriendly :S
I've read it up on imdb.com for german and usa, but does anyone know for japan? they seem to be a bit more relaxed when it comes to those restrictions
Japan is alot less censored compared to the United States. Mind you the TV networks still censor to their own standards, though thier are new expections now. Anime has been gorwing in popularity in the states and worldwide since the 70-80s, but in the 90s it really started getting popular, to the point where it is now. With the influx of foreign veiwers, the censoring standards at which anime is being held has increased, for isntance: A Japanese company was threatened with boycott if they did not change the blood scenes in CERTAIN animes, hence why in bleach we now have a nice brown maroon colored blood.
As for the Japanese children, it depends on thier parents, just like in the USA. I watched rated-R at 5 years old, but other kids weren't allowed till they were 16 that i knew. However the Japanese have been cited to raise thier children as conformists, who are often exposed more to raw media with little censorship. The prinicple behind it is: if you decensitize yourself to it when your young, you will be able to cope with it at a older age.
THE LAW
In Japan, Article 21 of the Japanese Constitution guarantees freedom of expression and prohibits formal censorship. What censorship does exist is often carried out through Article 175 of the Criminal Code of Japan. Historically the law has been interpreted in different ways - recently it has been interpreted to mean that all pornography must be at least partly censored; however, there have been very few arrests based on this law.
Age limits on Conan? It would be hard to do that, since DC is on a popular(?) channel at primetime.
