Yeah, Viz has done some really facepalm worthy translations. Take the Golden Apple case for example...

Thanks to you guys, I've started reading that 30 Hugs thing. Pretty good so far.

Urgh, don't remind me about that. (And am I the only one that dislikes the changing of Vermouth's catchphrase from "A secret makes a woman a woman" to "It's that touch of mystery that gives a woman her allure"? Aside from the fact that I don't think they ever write the new catchphrase the same way twice, I just feel like the original was more... her. Somehow.)

30 Hugs is good- hell, all of Candyland's stuff is fantastic. She's done oneshot collections for Aoko and Kaito, Shinichi and Ran, just random oneshts, utterly random crackshots, short serial fics... I think she's got something like 300 stories on her profile, for a couple dozen fandoms O_o Her LJ's hilarious too. Check out the rest of her stories when you're done with Hugs ;) [/plug]

I buy it so I can read it offline, but it does bug me. I think poor Ai has it worst, because she doesn't even have the same dub name in the anime and manga. Anita Hailey, Vye Graythorne (dunno if that's it, don't watch the english anime much), Shiho Miyano, Ai Haibara, Sherry... It's a wonder the girl can keep track of her own name.

This is a post from the DC World forums summing up the epic fail Viz and Funimaton tend to be at times.

Japanese all the way. I was so ticked off when they changed TWO-MIX into Two-Times. >:( They left it alone in the American release of the manga but then changed it in the American release of the anime. Dang-it, it's bad enough when they change the names of the fictional characters and then they go and change the names of real people; they changed the names of Minami and Shiina! How messed up is that?!

Btw this is a was on the back of volume 30 of the American release of the Detective Conan manga.

[glow=lightblue,2,300]The Kaido Kid GameLong ago, Sunset Manor was the site of a gruesome massacre...and an unsolved mystery. Now six master detectives have been invited to the manor to play a deadly game hosted by Japan's greatest phantom thief. A lost treasure, an impossible poisoning, a message in blood, ominous images of crows; it's all part of a puzzle not even the sleuths can solve, especially after they start turning on each other. The only one who can win the game and stop the deaths from piling up is the uninvited seventh detective: Conan![/glow]

No I did not make that typo; that is actually on the back of volume 30 and can be found on the Viz website. I saw volume 30 at a bookstore with this on the back and was absolutely flabbergasted. I mean geez, they mess up Akai with Akagi in another issue and they do this. The sad thing about the Akai/Akagi thing is that the name was shown as 'Akai' before the mess up with Akagi so that even someone who wasn't at all familiar with the original version would know there was a screw-up with the name.
Do I need to say more?

You could say why that's an error for starters.

Edit: you could have just highlighted the name so I would actually notice that. lol Kaido Kid.

I saw that when I bought volume 30, I was like "Kaido Kid? That's a new one..."

Also, I always assumed that the "Shuichi Akagi" thing was just him giving a slightly fake name.

They do this with Shinichi too.  When he's running away in the first one and Ran's yelling for him to come back, she says, "Shin--!"  Then she says, "Jimmy!"
For heaven's sake, just leave the names alone people, especially if you can't remember to change them all the time!

I just checked my copy fro the 7th printing and it says "Jim-", so they must have realized the mistake and fixed it somewhere along the line. Still, that's a big mistake to make, especially considering how many people dislike the English names already.

Cute! I love that flashback episode to their middle school days XD Especially love how Shinichi's the only one that figures out it was them... XDXDXDXD

They're a bit inconsistent with Kazuha's name too, aren't they? She's still Kazuha in the english manga, which is a bit random, considering even Heiji's dad got a name change, but hasn't she had like two dub names?

I think there's about five actually listed on the DCW Wiki, but I know that her name in the English dub is Kirsten Tomas.

Shinichi + Ran is better, but Kazuha + Heiji is okay too. :V I heard Movie 15 is focusing on Heiji + Kazuha too.. so... D:<
