Well, from a story-telling perspective (and judging Goshos way of writing his manga) I have to agree. In the end there will be an antidote and Shinichi will return.
Though, I am talking about the other possibility. (Come on, surprise us Gosho!)
Haibara, who is spending 1/4 of her time in school, another 1/4 playing detective (or going fishing, camping...) with the others, another 1/4 reading fashion magazines and supervising the professors diet... well, that single girl is supposed to find an antidote against a poison that the organization invested a lot of time and resources in? Within less than a year so Shinichi can return to his Ran?
It is not that unrealistic that Conan would have to remain shrunk for the rest of his life. And why not fall in love with a girl that harmonies well with him, even if she only is his current physical age?

Assuming she sleeps 8 hours a day, 1/4 of 16 hours is only 4. How did you get to 12 hours?
And well... at some days she is probably doing one of the other things more. A camping-day (or fishing, sightseeing, whatever) will have her occupied a whole day, as does when she decides to stick with Ayumi and the others to actually join an investigation. And on a normal day she is probably in school for more than 4 hours.

24 hours in a day and two fourths are a half. Half of 24 is 12. Plus she probably doesn't sleep 8 hours even if I did count it, more like 4-5.

But "reading magazines and watching the Professors diet" is only one fourth. So at max 6 hours if she wouldn't sleep.
And I doubt she only sleeps 4 hours a night, especially since she has to run around so much since she got shrunk.

But the fact remains that she is just one person, who can spent 4-5 hours at researching at maximum. When you compare it with the BO, which had several scientists, working on it the whole day and still needed several years to complete the APTX... then it should be evident that a fast result would be nothing short of a miracle. Yes, it will probably happen, but if it doesn't then the shrunken victims should get accustomed to their new lives in the meanwhile. They (well actually it is only Conan) can't maintain their double-identity forever.
Of course the logical step would be to tell Ran that he won't return anytime soon and that she should not wait for him. And neither should Conan.

So in the end, this is why it is not unlikely that Conan will remain Conan, thus Ayumi actually has (quite a good chance) to win his love eventually.
