IMO, even if it turns out that Conan never goes back to his original age or something did happen to Ran, I just couldn't see this pairing ever happening, just like with Mitsuhiko x Ai, if the same goes for her.  The main reason I couldn't see it happening is because of Conan's mentality (and Ai's for that matter).  I couldn't see them ever seeing them as anything beyond "kids" with maturity levels way lower than both of theirs. 

I do find Ayumi's crush on Conan cute (just like Mitsuhiko with Ai), but, like I said, just couldn't see any pairings involving either of the DB members paired up with Conan or Ai.

They wouldn't be kids forever.
Ayumi and Mitsuhiko have 10 years to grow up before they reach the same age as Shinichi and Ran have now. 10 years is a long time for Conan/Ai, long enough for them to gradually realize that the "kids" are progressing and no children anymore.
And I think that even now they are more than "kids" to them. They are their friends.

Which leads to the question: Who is the current Conan? 

Ayumi would be quite compatible with him, as she loves detective work, loves soccor, and has all the qualities Conan THINKS a girl needs....though I think Conan is as bad at choosing romantic partners as Gosho is at making them...

"Qualities Conan THINKS a girl needs"? Love is less rational than that. 
You don't decide who you fall in love with, you just do. Ayumi has the qualities Conan likes in girls, it is something unconscious and not not a deliberate choice. That is why he can't be "bad at choosing romantic partners".
Sure, Gosho is actually making his choices and he makes them deliberately. But he is also the one who can decide to make their relationship actually work. 

It is not Gosho himself who writes them, that is true. So it is not canon.

But Anime Originals (AO) and Movies are made by people with a certain knowledge of the DC universe.

So it is an interpretation made by a huge group of developers/screenwriters/coworkers. They have put a lot of thought into the dialog and they decided it would we in-character for Haibara to say these words. And yes, I agree with them. Haibara knows of Ayumis feelings and supports them. 

So you are saying all the Ai x Conan moments in movies and AOs(which are more direct) are fair game with you?

Well, we have been talking quite a lot about the canon moments already, haven't we? There is no reason why we shouldn't use AOs, OVAs and Movies. Not as "proofs" of course, but as evidences that other people (who are not part of this forum) share our point of view. 
PS: Expect a letter from lawyers office Kisaki&Co within the next few days. Trespassing in my room, making a buying contract without my consent, stealing money, not allowing the commercial return period...

They'd probably still see them "as kids", though.  It's like parents with their children.  Yes, the children grow up, but the parents still see them as "their children".

There are even situations where you might have like say, two people grow up together as friends.  One of those people had a younger sibling.  The friend continues to view his/her friend's sibling as a "sibling", even if they've grown up.

That's pretty much where I was going with that and feel that no matter what, no matter how much they grow, Conan and Ai will probably always view them as kids in some way.

Well, I did watch the fifth movie last night, and that has copious amounts of Ai crushing on Conan, so...it gives a more solidish standing for me. Anyway, for my crazy idea...I'll try not to write too much detail in case I do decide to do evil fan-fiction.

I had a thought where Ayumi got into some kind of dangerous mess (preferably Organization-related), and Conan is once again the savior. This causes her to grow closer to him, and she decides to fully tell him, sealing it with a kiss. Of course, Conan being in the predicament that he's in, knows that he can't really give the same kind of feelings back and is torn with what he has to do. He doesn't want to really hurt her after all she's been through, but his heart still longs for Ran.

At least that's my thoughts.

Regarding the Fifth movie, we've known for long that haibara love sarcasm and conan-teasing..

How could we know that she wasn't just teasing Conan in the end of the Movie, and not because she really cared about Ayumi well being..

I actually got a "parenting" feel from that scene. "That's right Ai, set the bait from him, lure him in and BAM hitting with the we are having children line".
