http://dating.personals.yahoo.com/singles/datingtips/88955/does-a-big-age-difference-doom-a-relationship

This whole subject reminds me of this latest article on yahoo! Does Big Age difference mean the doom of a relationship?

To me, I agree that age makes a big difference to some degree, as the experiences need to be similar in life. However, there needs to be much more than "age" for a relationship to work. Background, family, career, goals, personalities, emotions also play a big factor in compatibility in relationships.

I think AyumixConan have a lot in common (so far). I think they have the ability to accept their family backgrounds. But that age difference is a problem. I even think that ConanxAyumi's personalities could possibly gel well. They would be willing to accept each other's careers over everyone else...but that age difference is the huge leap between them. Conan is a little insensitive and secretive when it comes to women as he hides everything from them to "protect" them, which I think will hurt Ayumi in the long run, who is more sensitive and open with her feelings.

Same with AixMitsu, though I think they have even less in common. I also don't think Mitsu has the qualities Ai is looking for in a man...one thing being is that Mitsu ISN'T a man...he's a boy... ;D Their backgrounds are also not very compatible, though Mitsu might be willing to accept Ai's...Her family?...hmm, not too sure. Personalities might work because Mitsu is able to put up with hers...whether Ai can put up with his...it's possible. Their emotions are too different. Mitsu will end up being hurt by Ai's aloofness.

I don't think age differences are a problem - even HUGE age differences, e.g. 20 years.

But if they started hanging out when one of them was still a child (14 and under), yes there are problems.  Mostly legal, but also developmental - different stages in life, etc.  Psychological due to social mores.  Etc.

However, depending on the dynamics of the relationship (mother/father complex), I suppose there are instances of these relationships working out.  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Kay_Letourneau

Healthy or not, who knows?

well, sure age doesn't necessarily make a person more mature, and depending on the person may not make that big of a difference. I do believe however, if you are 17 and you grew up "baby-sitting" people younger than you, you will not view them as potential partners as easily.

I do believe however that Conan is way more mature than Ayumi will ever be. He's way ahead of his time even in his own age, and his intelligence surpasses that already of a normal teenager. Too bad he doesn't try harder in school. Probably doesn't take it seriously considering it's possibly too easy for him... ::) And he probably gets excellent grades.

But in some ways, if someone who is way older makes certain demands, because they are older and have done youthful things in their prime, it may hold the youth back from doing things they've never done. Also, if someone is older and have lived in a different generation, they'll have different ideas about things, and see the world differently. I live in generation Y, and some generations may not be compatible with my generation, as it is a possessive, power-seeking generation, that goes for what they desire, cares about technology and all occult or metaphysical ideals. Other generations may not get a long with that view on the world, which was stimulated from our type of parenting, teachers, and older influences when we were children. The older we get, the more we get a stronger hold on influences.

Shinichi, by the time Ayumi reaches his age, will still be much less influenced by the world than Ayumi. They will also be influenced by two different generations, which is formed initially from parenting and schooling from ages 7-15. After that, it becomes difficult to influence the young adult mind.

It may not make a BIG difference, but it's something to consider. It's just one thing less they have in common. Shinichi would have to hold off on discussing things that would seem like the ancient past to Ayumi... :P Then again, he always seems to blab nonsense even to people his age.

I never age as a huge factor for either Ai or Conan, simply becasue unless they return to adult size, they won't really grow older until the get back to where they were, putting them much closer than you'd think to the Detective Boys. Sure they will have more past than the others in their age group, but past is something which makes everyone unique. They will share the last ten years which will be more meaningful by then than what happen back then, you also have to consider the psychological impact of being treated like a x year old person by society. They make small mentions of the changes that the two have undergone since being in a child's environment more, but over the next decade that would be amplified greatly.

Biologically by the time it would be Conan, High School Detetcive. He'd still not know what it's like to be an adult in many senses, to have a family, ect. So in a way until Conan is Shinichi's age, he wouldn't really grow older. Now he'll be smart as crap of course, and have background others don't, but Shinichi was basically the same way. It really depends on how integrated he became in his new role, weather or not he'd stop seeing Ayumi as a child, but a peer, which in many ways she'd be, but even then practicality I don't see Conan acutally choosing someone other than Ran, and if he was put in a situation where he couldn't have her, I don't see him as the character to acutally find a new love. And will instead brood about Ran forever proabaly.

Ladies and gentlemen of the jury, today you must defeat evil. You must use your collective reasoning to see through the mask of these defendants. There, there at the defense table sits what might appear to be two little girls and a high school girl but NO, ladies and gentleman, it is EVIL that sits there.

Defendants no.1, Ayumi has been accuse several times of child molestation. You have heard Genta's testimony of the cruel things she did to the victim (Conan) alone in that room, ignoring the victims pleas for her to stop...you even heard the victim (Conan) himself, before he broke into tears due to the trauma. And next to her sits Ai Haibara, on trial for being too awesome..something that you MUST find her guilty of regardless of how many jurors she's killed up to this point. You CANNOT let her intimidate you!
Finally Ran Mouri, her good nature and good will is something our society does NOT NEED. How dare she care for others more than herself, how dare she be friendly with everyone, how dare she try to act in such a vulgar manner...behind BARS IS WHERE SHE AND THE OTHER TWO BELONG! GUILTY, find them *dramatic pause* all guilty..for humanity.
Prosecution rest your honor.

So much discussion while I was away.  ;D

Though half of it was about a calculator with a doctor title that claims it can evaluated pairings just by the names of the two persons involved. Right...  ::)  ::)  ::)

I hope you don't mind if I don't take anything of that serious, right? Genta would never dare to rat out Ayumi, he knows better than that.  :P

But seriously... I see no relevance to the previous posts so I guess you are okay with keeping the discussion of the previous weeks where they are now. A ceasefire, some kind of unstable peace. Time to reread and/or understand the statements of the "other" party.

I don't think the "age difference" would be much of a problem. Like the "he said" - part of that article says (which is the part claiming that a age difference matters in relationships):

Age is the vehicle by which we experience common milestones in life. These milestones give us the ability to relate to one another -- experiencing a first kiss, first partner, marriage, home, career, child, divorce, etc. If you're at the end of this list, what on Earth could you have in common with someone near the beginning?

Conan and Ayumi growing up the "natural way" by letting 10 years pass would have had the same milestones (they would both be at the beginning of the list). Conan would not develop and experience things like would do if he were Shinichi during that time, rather he would re-experience the same experiences as Ayumi does. So in the end they would have experienced the same milestones, they would not only be physically the same age like they are now, their mental age would also be much closer than it was before.
Otherwise, just as you said: in other factors they already have a lot in common with each other so they will (probably) understand and accept each other.

Well, Conan x Ayumi wouldn't have legal issues since Conan is the same age as Ayumi and not a dude 10 years older than her. At least to all but a few selected people who know about his shrinking... This would also reduce the "social pressure" by a lot since only people who know him know about his past life. But those people know him well enough to understand his situation and will be able to come to a fair judgment.

It might be different if that person is the same physical age (and size) as you and does not consider you as an elder, but as a peer her own age. This is no normal baby-sitting.

He is more intelligent than Ayumi - and will probably always be, that is true. But maturity... I would say Conan/Shinichi is independent and behaves mature most of the time - but at other times he can become just as childish as Ayumi and the other detective boys. That usually happens when he gets intrigued in a secret and pursues the solution of that riddle with the same curiosity as the real children. Shinichi/Conan is only mature as long as his excitement (for a case) does not take over, and I can hardly imagine that he will ever get rid of that trait. So his maturity will never be as outstanding as his intelligence (and maybe his independence) so I would not say that one of the children (like Ayumi) would not be able to become more mature than him.

Yeah, that is what I think as well.  :)
The difference between Conan and Ayumi will decrease quickly when they are growing up to the age Shinichi was before his encounter with the BO. Conan is not Shinichi so his development will be much different from that of a normal teenager of Rans age.
But it is true... in the end he would also depend if Conan is able to give up his past life as Shinichi and accept his new age, and if he is able to let go of Ran at some point. Though, I think he would do so eventually. 10 years are a long time to get accustomed and slowly drift away from his relationship with Ran.
