also a 1 hour special is a horrible idea, because although I enjoy the AOs more than a lot of people, I want to avoid having any more of them than is necessary.

Well, they kind of have to do it. On average, three manga chapters makes two anime episodes, so by necessity a third of the anime episodes need to be reruns or AOs. Also since the manga breaks more than the anime (I think) and sometimes they do 1+ hour specials which off balances the manga/anime ratio futher, they have to do a few additional AO/reruns to make up for it.
