Best/worst of the movies?

Postby Brekclub85 » December 25th, 2009, 10:56 pm

Having seen the dubbed versions of the first four movies and all 13 subbed, here's my ratings for them.

My favorites:
Captured In Her Eyes-good mystery, and the character development was nice.
Countdown to Heaven-Loved Ai in this, both the main mystery and the BO parts were intriguing, and the final escape was amazing.
The Fourteenth Target-Really enjoyed this one, can't really explain.
The Phantom of Baker Street-Loved Conan meeting his idol, and the virtual London was also cool. I loved how this was darker than most Conan ep/movies.
Strategy Above The Depths-Mainly for the twist of Kogoro figuring it out before Conan.
The Raven Chaser-The finale was suspenseful, and I hated seeing Irish die.

Ones I like but aren't my absolute favorites:
The Last Wizard of the Century-At first I didn't really care for this one, but it grew on me. Liked the plot point about Kid's bird.
Magician of the Silver Sky-was going fine until the actress' murderer was revealed, because after that, there was no more mystery.
Crossroads in the Ancient Capital-I just can't explain. I like this one, but not to the extent of the others.
The Private Eyes' Requiem-Was dent but didn't really pick up till the last 30-45 minutes for me.

My least favorites:
The Time Bombed Skyscraper, Full Score of Fear, and Jolly Roger in the Deep Azure-I had the same problem with all 3 of these: They felt just like longer episodes of the show and were very dull until the endings.

What bout you guys?

I avoided 8-11 which are often considered to be the worst movies (although I avoided them before knowing that).

Worst was definitely Full Score of Fear because it was like the somewhat less annoying version of 383. Good case that took way too long.

Favorite is definitely The Phantom of Baker Street.

Just like my favorite characters(excluding sexy eyes), the order is subject to change:
* means I really have no set place for that movie.
Spoiler:
1)Countdown to Heaven -Thrill, Shock, Suspense and Sexy eyes(No not Vodka). I agree that it didn't have the greatest plot of all the movies but it did have you entertained all the way.

1)Captured in Her Eyes - This is one of the few movies that had a good balance of action, character development, and mystery.

*)The Time-Bombed Skyscraper - Had enough to make it seem more than a long DC episode but it never got to the point where you felt it was a true movie. Regardless, I still found it quite enjoyable and no matter what, it being the first movie will always make you appreciate it.

Spoiler:
*)The 14th Target - Following The Time-Bombed Skyscraper, this movie was great. I really liked the killing by the numbers aspect and the side story of Ran's family. Only thing that didn't make this movie my all time favorite was the last twenty minutes. It just felt like they didn't use the great scenario they established for themselves to its full potential and instead went with a quick wrap up.

*)The Last Wizard of the Century - It didn't live up to the cast. Heiji and Kid in the same movie should equal brain exploding from awesomeness but movie didn't deliver. It had its good points like the chase/final scene but not enough to make the movie fully great.

2)Phantom of Baker Street - It had the hard/horrible task of following Countdown to Heaven but it turned out to be a good movie in its own right. After a few more views it really grew on me to the point that it's one of the few movies I can just watch to pass the time.

2)Crossroads in the Ancient Capital -This is THE movie that most will(including myself) will not really enjoy the first time. It has numerous references that have you stopping the movie to digest and it has an extremely slow pace. It's only after watching it several times that I can see what the director was going for and thus can really enjoy this unique movie.

Spoiler:
*)Magician of the Silver Sky - Started off with a weak mystery that was only entertaining because you got "Shinichi" fooling around ;D. Then the first mystery is cleared up quickly just leaving a dramatic movie of Ran landing a plane while Kid was around. Though Ran landing a plane with Sonoko was badass AND entertaining...it still wasn't good enough. A key moment in the movie, hearing Ran saying "girigiri safefu"  ;D.

*)Strategy Above The Depths - "Hey..you know what would be cool? Having a scene with sexy ey--Haibara in a shirt and only a shirt messing with Mitsuhiko."
"That would be cool...lets make a movie around that scene!"
Movie was okay all the way. Only thing that saved it from being horrible were the fanservice scenes(the good kind that don't involve pantsu, naked females, and panty shots) of Ai, Conan, Dbs, Ran, Sonoko, and Kogoro bringing the PAIN.

*)The Private Eyes' Requiem- Didn't live up to its own start or its own cast. The fanservice scenes were great though Kazuha's VA seemed a bit off at the start.

Spoiler:
*)Jolly Roger in the Deep Azure - Wasn't as bad as Jd made it sound. It did feel like a long episode with the last 20 minutes being crazy but it was still watchable and enjoyable(at some points).

*)Full Score of Fear - This one was better compared to the last three movies. This one was carried more by the characters than its story, which wasn't bad. Only problem I had with it that it set itself to seem like it was going to have a big climax but it never did.

*)The Raven Chaser - Too many out of character scenes. Too many scenes that didn't even have good explanations. Too many high ranked B.O. members moving around out of character doing task that should be assigned to lower members.

I find it funny how I spent almost the entire 2nd viewing of movie 13 just looking for OOCness and failed to find any outside of maybe Gin.

no that just means you're wrong

hype, a few of the manga cases have them be more OOC than movie 13 (and not just Ran either)

I'm not arguing those manga cases am I.

Spoiler:
  • You don't deploy your two highest ranked assassins to blow out the tires of a car.
  • You do not keep the police commissioner you are holding in the middle of the woods when you have the resources to make him disappear temporarily or permanently.
  • You do not have the one person that can ruin you switch and possibly bring to light your organization on loose watch...by your expert disguise member when you can place a low member on watch 24/7
  • You do not come to the conclusion that there is a spy in your ranks from blown out tires and stepped on paint. You do not disobey a direct order because you might think a random call from a professor has to do with your already unbelievable theory which you lack TOTAL evidence of.
  • You do not deploy a chopper to eliminate 1 target when there are better and more discrete ways to do so.
  • You do not proceed to light up Tokyo Tower(?) when you are an organization that deals in the shadows.
  • You do not deploy one of your highest ranked members to recon the mall when a lower member could of done the same thing(obviously only done to give Conan and the viewer insight but it was still done badly)
  • You do not recall that a bullet travels at 350 meters per second and proceed to think it's a good idea to dodge bullet standing 4 feet away from gun.
  • You do not engaged into a hand to hand showdown with your opponent if you were just going to ultimately grab your gun

I would keep going but I made the point.

I admit I was wrong. Doesn't make OOC-whining for a fun AO movie that spent a lot of time appealing to the more hardcore Conan fans only for them to whine (as expected from hardcore fans of ANYTHING) any less nit-picky and annoying. Especially since I watched it a second time ignoring any of the fun just to stop such nonsense.

I will say that you are not actually whining in the slightest but as this is a fanbase for anything, I assume there are some people who are.

Favorite of the films would be a tie between:

Movie 01: Tokei Jikake no Matenrou (The Timed Bomb Skyscraper)
Movie 04: Hitomi no naka no Ansatsusha (Captured in her Eyes)
Movie 06: Baker Street no Bourei (The Phantom of Baker Street)
Movie 07: Meikyuu no CROSSROAD (Crossroad in the Ancient Capital)
Movie 09: Suiheisenjyou no SUTORATEEJI (Strategy Above Depths)
Movie 10: Tanteitachi no Chinkonka [Requiem] (Requiem of the Detectives)
Movie 13: Shikkoku no CHASER (The Raven Chaser)

The worst ones for me would be a tie between:

Movie 08: Ginyoku no MAJISHAN (Magician of the Silver Sky) *Was really boring to me*
Movie 11: Konpeki no JOLLY ROGER (Jolly Roger in Deep Azure)
Movie 12: Senritsu no FULL SCORE (Full Score of Fear)

Hm, most of the movies aren't that great XD but here are my faves

in ranking...

1. Last wizard of the mother hyping Century (heh, its an awesome movie. Scorpion Desu!)

2. 14th Target (I watched this back then when I didnt know movies were non-canonical...ah ignorance is bliss, because if it was canon, awesome plot)

3. Captured in Her Eyes (pretty awesome, and i'm not a ran fan at all.  Also, ai parts were pretty epic)

4. Phantom of Beika (it was done pretty well, and refreshing change with the virtual shit...but it was kinda cheesy)

5. Raven Chaser (A step forward regarding the last like...4 movies, not super awesome, but i like how it referenced cases in the anime/manga)

6. Countdown (It was alright, it didnt have much plot plus the BO wasnt as integral as they promoted)

7. Strategy above Depths (meh...ai scenes)

8. Timed Bomb Skyscraper (ugh, great, super RanXShin movie and the case felt like a crappy AO)

9. Magician of the Silver Sky (...wtf was going on in that case)

10. Detective's Requiem (SO CONFUSING, I had no idea what was going on)

11. Jolly Roger (Ai scenes, but what a boring as hype case)

12. Full Score of Fear (Ai scenes...thats it.)

13.  Crossroads (I actually have no recollection of wtf went on in that movie.  It was so boring, had like lost in translation japanese references, I am not a heiji fan, worst movie to me.)

From my viewpoint, the first 6 movies were actually pretty good for the most part.  Once movie 7 hit with it's cheesy lame 3d special effects, everything has gone down hill.  We had a movie about classical music and female bearded pirates since then.  Talk about boring.  Raven Chaser is definitely an improvement, so let's hope movie 14 improves as well...

Also, especially in movie 10, sometimes i have no hyping clue what's going on in the plot.  Like, it's so confusing to me.  Maybe it has to do with my short attention spam, but honestly, it felt like it jumped all over the place with illogical conclusions.

I hope I'm not the only one here who likes movie 1, 2 and 3..

1. Was my favourite. Because of the ShinRan? Yes. I liked the ending <3

2. Nice plot. It required knowledge of japanese, but nevertheless, it was fun. I love Genta's quote - "Eh? Megure-keibu's name is 'thirteen'?" XD

3. Best Kid movie to me. Plot was very interesting. YES SHINRAN!

4. It was nice, not as good as the other movies, but not bad. That Ran-with-blood-on-face was creepy. And yes, her karate made it worthwhile <3

5. It was okay, I liked it the second time I watched it. I liked Ayumi's role in this one, as well as the BO aspect.

6. Amazing. <3 I loved Ran's role in the last scene.

7. WTF? I didn't get it at all. Only watched it because of the HeiKazu in it.

8. Unoriginal plot.. oh well, I liked the plane scene. Kaitou you pervert <3

9. Strategy above the depths, right? I liked it, but it's not my favourite. Same rating as 4, 5, 6 and 8.

10. Am I the only one here who thought the movie was okay-ish and not terrible? D: Okay, the plot was boring, but I liked the action part at the end.

11. Jolly Roger, right? Didn't like much. Same rating as 7 & 10.

12. wtf was that? It had some nice ShinRan at the beginning, though.. but still, bleh.

13. Enjoyable. BO-in-chopper was lame though. It's difficult to make a BO non-canon, so I won't be as harsh with this.

The only one I truly enjoyed was Last Wizard of the Century. Because it´s awesome and japanese people trying to talk German never fails to amuse me.

4 and 6 my favourites...
M12 developed veeery slowly, so it was hard to concentrate at the end. Nevertheless, it was a good movie.
