Something bothers me about Magic File 3.....Not a fan of non

Can we just use this topic as like the discussion thread for the magic file?

I have a question...Conan talked about something to do with mahjong relating to a crime...was he referring to the "scar" arc in the actual manga/series?..Or was he foreshadowing movie 13?

considering that it's a magic file for movie 13, it's probably foreshadowing. Otherwise, there would have to be something else in the MF related, meaning either the guy that got angry, or daisuke are related to the movie, which I sort of doubt.

Right on. This has gotta be my favorite OVA. It's still one, right? (even if it's called a magic file... why is that anyway?)

So good that it felt so short. I actually had to check the counter on my divx player when it was over.

I don't really get what the problem is. They're just kids.

No one's clearly pointing out that the boy's name is Daisuke and not Tanabana.
How can you feel sorry for him when you didn't even get his name correctly?

whatever the boys name is I felt bad for him. He got a bogus role. I can feel sorry for him even if I don't know his name.  Besides, I think it's just wrong to make the female drool over some hot-shot in DAISUKE's face.
"Just Kids" is what I say about ShinRan. When they were KIDS, their little crushes were fine. But Being adults and being kids are too different things. And my idea that they wouldn't work out as lovers like they do as childhood friends. Same with the Mistsuhiko Haibara thing, it's just a kid crush.

Well, I think some people think differently. Many people take THOSE crushes like it's romantic, why not take the Daisuke affection like he loves Ran?

Guess it is M13 foreshadowing. As you can see in the trailer, there's a mahjong related crime in the movie too.
I wonder if this story happened before M13? The kids are going to go bug-catching in the movie too right?

I agree and disagree with Sora. I like the way Shinichi handled the confrontation with the boy was really good.He could of gotten loud like Sonoko but that would just set off Ran's "self-pity" mode and place a spotlight on her. The way he chose to handled it had Ran wondering more about Shinichi than the boy, which made things easier for Ran overall. It also made his "solution" look that much better.

But I agree that Ran seems to be attached to Shinichi in Gosho's writing. Why hasn't Ran received famous/popular lovers from her childhood that mysteriously show up to her house like Shinichi has received?(one canon and one AO..and yeah I know both were misunderstandings)
Even a Heiji vs Shinichi for Ran misunderstanding would of been nice before Kazuha was introduced. One that actually had everyone fooled...not just Kazuha.

And I absolutely agree.

It just really bothered me to see that Shinichi gave him a photo with Ran, so the boy probably felt happy.....but really, the photo had SHINICHI on Ran's arm instead. If the boy ever found that out at the time, that probably would've made him feel inadequate to the "oh-so-great" Shinichi. And then Shinichi already thinks he's all that anyway, and probably figures Daisuke doesn't stand a chance, so he just gave Daisuke his "one moment of happiness...."

The OVAs and Movies seem to emphasize Ran's dependency on Shinichi a lot more than the manga...

Well no, the whole "I only see the guy I like" thing is done by Gosho too.  Like the newest Kazu/Hei chapter where Kazuha didn't even notice the fact that she rejected her neighbor before he can even confess xD.  Heiji was even worse there by unintentionally practically rubbing it in his rivals face (ouchies).

As for Shinichi or Heiji for that matter having an actual love rival, I don't recall that ever happening in any of Gosho's stories (but then I haven't read them all).  There will always be a love rival (that's prettier, smarter, with more character development, etc) for the girls but the guys usually don't have much problems (except being too stupid but that's their own problem).  

Movies, AOs, OVAs all like to use Ran as a plot device.  Of course by plot device I mean "something that will make Shinichi look good" device.  But then really, all characters are like that.  It's just Ran takes the least explaination (love is not logical so therefore we can scew character development and make plots!11).  All in all it's plot creativity fail.

I share your irritation with the oh-so-great Shinichi. Guy's a jerk right from the start. What better explanation for that is there other than he's made in the image of Holmes?
[s](BTW, I've read only the 1[sup]st[/sup] two novels so far - A Study in Scarlet and Sign of the Four, each of `em before going to bed for two consecutive nights last week. Point is I don't know how much character development did the world-famous detective get over the many works of his creator.
I'm still contemplating on reading the 3[sup]rd[/sup] novel since I was let down by the similarity of the 1[sup]st[/sup] two in motive - revenge.[/s]I like killers who kill for the sake of killing. That sounds weird?  ;D) --- I've finished all Holmes canon. Loved the Valley of Fear the most.

Back to the topic, the only tiny thing that bothers me about Shinichi giving the photo to Daisuke is that it has Ran in her 1st worn yukata. Couldn't he have chosen another to give away? But then, you could also see Daisuke staring at Ran in the same pic. So, I'm thinking that it must be one of the things that showed Shinichi the poor boy's crush on Ran. Anyway, I still find it awful sweet of him to give up the yukata pic (his "moment of happiness" as you've said) in exchange for Ran's happiness (i.e. her mom coming home).
