Catchy title, eh?
Just drawing your attention *evil grin*
Spoiler:
With the number of Ai fans here, I'm sure I can get some replies!
I want to talk about something that has nothing to do with the main topic mentioned...
And here it goes...
Spoiler:
Conan playing chess or any other board games.
a) have you seen him playing on one?
b) had he mentioned it or even talked about it?
And that's the first one.
I'll post other topics later, okay?

The reason why I started this topic is because I really remembered seeing Conan playing chess once...
But I can't remember what episode...
Then this... yeah, I forgot that it's in the movies.
Thanks you very much, anyways!
Well then, how about in the anime?
Spoiler:
I'm going to ask kirite-san to draw me a pic But then again, I had another request pending.

I saw a picture of Conan playing chess with Heiji, haibara was also there and the chess figures where Shinichi, Ran and Heijihimself. XD It was very funny, not to mention it wasn't even a fanart or anything.
Oh, found it!

Well, he also showed that he knows the basic rules of Go. And Mahjong.
So I guess he would also know the rules of Shogi and most other board and card games and - considering his inteligence, ambition and the fact that he excels at everything he does (except video games and singing) I would think he is quite good in all of them.
Can't remember seeing im playing one though. But to understand the games he probably played them when he learnd them, even if it was not shown in Anime or Manga.

Conan knows shogi. (Ran also apparently at least knows the initial layout of the pieces in a shogi game. (12) She may not have been the one to shout out that it was the "lance", but she already placed the lighter when Aoyama gave her the "noticed something" mark, so it wasn't to show that she finally saw where to place the lighter.)

Don't know why Conan is so proud in that chess picture.
Assuming that "Conan" and "Heiji" are Kings (which seems logic) then Ran is either a pawn, knight, bishop, rock or queen.
Looks like it is Heiji's turn.
By the way the "Ran-chesspiece" is turned she is either a Bishop or a queen. In that case Heiji has no legal move left - in chess that means a stalemate (Patt) which means the game ends in a draw (and a rather humilating one; except if "Ran" just captured a "Kazuha" queen in Conan's last move - but then Heiji wouldn't look different).
Same if Ran is a Knight, it would be a draw as well.
Only if Ran is a Rock or Pawn (The two most unlikely figures for her), then Conan would win that game. But Heiji should have realized he had lost long ago then.

Why's a stalemate humiliating?
Just wondering...

Because unless caused by the moves of your opponent (such as saccrificing queen-Kazuha on a2 (the field queen-Ran is standing on) it is your own fault if you cause a stalemate.
And causing a stalemate yourself means you can not even calculate one step in advance (taking in acount what moves your opponent could make). (With only king-Heiji in the corner there is not much to calculate...)
Basically, it is considered to be a mistake only complete beginners with no grasp of the game would make.

Oh. Thanks for explaining.
You see,
I'm not very good at chess.

It's shogi from the same story I already referenced. (Snowy Mountain Villa.... uhhhh.... (such a useful title ::) ) the end of vol11.ch1.)

I remember that episode! I didn't get it at first, but after I did I couldn't stop thinking about it. ;D (Seriously, I thought about that one part for like a week.)
(I just thought of another good reason to watch detective conan, it teaches you a lot of interesting things about Japan and it's culture. (A lot of anime I've watched doesn't really do that too often.)
