You know, now that I'm older I've gained newfound appreciation towards The Cursed Mask Coldly Laughs (EP184). So much so that I'll be willing to say it has quite possibly the greatest locked room murder trick in anime and manga ever due to how daringly it handles the visual clues. It's all in front of your nose but even when the trick is shown it's quite impressive. It's a trick that cannot work well outside of the visual medium.

That was generally considered one of the best AOs back in the day, and I tend to agree. It's just a really interesting, well handled mystery that's from when AOs could somewhat regularly be confused for actual Gosho cases in quality.



Episode 959: The Poodle and the Shotgun (Part Two)

-Maybe it's just me, but that feels like that hit wouldn't have knocked him out like that. It was a bit too slow.

-Well of course, someone else had to die so we can have three suspects.

-Suddenly, dog!

-Conveniently timed evidence dog.

-Ok, its pretty funny how he did the normal wacky, falling asleep suddenly noises Kogoro always does, and then when he's leaning on the chair looking cool he suddenly lets out a cool "hm" in an entirely different tone of voice. Such a simple, quick joke, but I am amused.

-Get away from that child's face, you weird woman

-"We emptied it" Well that's just an anti-climax. Like even for doing just that

-"I can't believe my plans were ruined by a poodle"

This sure was a case. Tbh, I'm finding some of the modern AOs to have a particular problem of being interesting in the 2nd half. Like they have a decent case premise, and the follow up to get to the Sleeping Kogoro stuff is...competent but boring. I'm not sure why, but its been a somewhat regular problem for a while.

Episode 962: Mori Kogoro's Grand Lecture (Part 1)

-Man, maybe this won't be an issue, but immediately I see a problem. And that's that Eri has barely been in this series since Kogoro got a new voice. So any chemistry to justify Kogoro and Eri...not being divorced might just not exist in the performances the same way they were.

-I'm surprised murder is a notable news story in this world. At this point it should be like "today's murder", because its like the weather. Always there, in some form.

-It would make sense Kogoro would be considered an important figure to get a lecture from at this point. Tbh, in this world, he should be considered like the hero of Japan for solving all these murders.

-Three event staff, huh? What a convenient number.

-I guess never mind on three of them meaning anything

-Yes, plz send the kids away so Haibara can be in an episode and maybe even do things

-I actually didn't know that was supposed to be blood until they said so

-Who is this girl? She's been consistently noticing things other people haven't so it has to mean...something.

-"But I killed someone else" ...well, this took a turn

Episode 963: Mori Kogoro's Grand Lecture (Part Two)

-I'd be weirded out if I found out after the fact they merely delayed it because SOMEONE HAD DIED.

-Who would win:
One adult or
one tiny cane boi

-I just realized, this is part 2 of 3, they have an hour. So essentially, this case is happening in real time (ignoring the 6 days, 23 hours and 30 minutes between parts 2 and 3 anyway).

-"We have less than 30 minutes" OH CMON, YOU HAD A GREAT SETUP FOR THIS : (

-"Ah yes, small child I don't know. If you say Kogoro sent you, it must be true. Please see the crime scene. I'm a great police officer!"

-I have no idea why Conan is walking backwards downstairs

-This girl needs to stop being so suspicious

-Ok, so what's the twist now that we've "solved the case" one episode early? I'd assume it was the girl all along, but who knows?

-Huh...not even a hint of the case at the end-oh it has a post-ED scene, ok!

I liked the Haibara ending as well but this new one (ED62) slaps hard. It's simple but atmospheric as heck.

Episode 964: Mori Kogoro's Grand Lecture (Part Three)

-"A new heroine" Stop treating people like fictional characters

-Well at least she's giving away her motivation, more or less

-She did a lot just to confront Kogoro like this

-Man, it would suck if Takagi was in the crowd and saw that Kogoto couldn't possibly be talking to him

-It's rare that Kogoro is called out like this! I'll take it I guess, though I know this will go nowhere

-I love "He's asleep! : D" because its just funny out of context. "He's suddenly asleep during this situation, that's great!"

-I like how the spotlight is still following them

-It always stands out when someone is actually willing to attack people in public like this

-Wow, that crowd went from terrified to pretty calm in no time at all

-"someday the one truth will be revealed" I see what you're doing there

-Saving Kogoro

I did like how this case didn't go the traditional route of "this person was behind everything all along" and instead was just two different cases. That certainly was a bit different. And it had better, more interesting pacing than a lot of cases for that reason. But I don't think the motivations hit as well you'd want it to. It's halfway there.

Episode 965: Kaiju Gomera VS Kamen Yaiba (Prologue)

-We get a whole prologue this time!

-I'm glad to see a crossover between these two. Hopefully it isn't a special that's so mediocre they have to make a movie to get something actually good out of it. I mean, imagine if two legendary series came together and...I dunno, just as an example, they spent too much time on some nothing original characters instead. That'd be just ridiculous.

-Let's mess with the Conan timeline more by having this movie be released before the series is over. And yet somehow it'll still be less than a year since Shinichi became a child.

-I mean, I do remember at least one Gomera centered case, but not one where Kamen Yaiba people would know them. Did that happen? Maybe in an AO? And even if it did, how many people watching this would remember what that connection is?

-"If I didn't watch it with Heiji, I would have no opinions about it! Or any movie!" - Kazuha, probably

-I will say, Kazuha hugging the Gomera statue is the cutest and most endearing thing she's done since...I actually don't even remember...

-Ok, that Opening kinda ruled. Only on rare occasion does Conan really do anything particularly aesthetically cool or much more than "acceptable and practical". That's not what its going for (especially as time has gone on). But there's some people on this team in recent years that are clearly trying to up their game in this regard. I respect that. Part of me wants to say its just silly or has nothing to do with anything other than "THIS IS BASED OFF A LONG RUNNING MANGA!!!" But its done so well, I can't complain. Cool song too.

-"You scared me, unmoving costume"

-Don't tease me with more actual Ran and Haibara interaction.

-Can you be afraid of heights in a smug way?

-LOL OK NVM, "I won't be arrested" immediately swerves into a lake and EXPLODES. 10/10, tremendous. I love it.

Episode 966: Kaiju Gomera VS Kamen Yaiba (Interlude)

-I almost forgot the exploding car omg! It's so good!

-Kazuha is now an energetic child. Actually, that's the type of contrast to Conan and Haibara I'm surprised they haven't done more of. I mean yeah, Kogoro, but that's not the same thing.

-I'll be honest, outside of developing prototype antidotes and rare bits of genuinely useful information provided, I don't see Haibara having the role of being Conan's "partner" in the first place

-I'm on Heiji's side, Kazuha needs to tone it down a bit. Mostly in volume.

-Ending an episode with a guy tied up, falling down. ED: "WHYYYYY"

Episode 967: Kaiju Gomera VS Kamen Yaiba (Climax)

-It'd be funny if he also exploded, but for no apparent reason

-Why is it Climax btw? Is there gonna be an entire aftermath to the case next episode?

-Heiji and Conan taunting Kogoro into doing his job

-Meh, I've seen Welcome to the NHK again recently, that room is super clean by comparison

-So this has nothing to do with the episode, but I wanted to double check to see what's been manga based in the past year. I didn't remember if this one was, it isn't. But apparently the anime is now two years behind?! What? How? When? Like I know it was 1 year behind for the longest time, so I don't know when this happened (and it isn't just because of the pandemic, I checked).

-Haibara doing all the work today

-"A lot can happen in 10 years" not in this series

-It's funny because 10 years ago, Haibara looked exactly like she does now.

Episode 968: Kaiju Gomera VS Kamen Yaiba (Finale)

-Kazuha shaking Gomera's hand is a great image

-Ok, anyone familiar with this series has to know where this is going. Especially if they've seen the movies. There's a bomb, there's one more person, there's a guy they've introduced who is around Ran right now. This is not quite "P and A if you speak English" obvious, but its closer than it should be.

-lol is the plot twist that this guy we just introduced is the actual last guy in this story?

-Or its this guy's brother? ...ok...

-...oh...so this guy just happens to work there, its not anyone who we know worked on the movie?

-"Hey Kazuha, person who I desperately want to be ok in every scenario over the past 2 decades, mind defusing this bomb for us?"

-They have 7 minutes...is that not enough?

-lol i really don't trust Conan to trust Ran to do something like this

So, I went into this episode thinking "this case has been good, if occasionally ridiculous. But for a 4 parter, I wanted something a bit better." Let me take that back now. Because this last episode really bothered me. I don't always remember every single detail of what happened the previous weeks of a case, but it at least seems like this kinda fell flat in that regard. The obvious stuff was obvious in bad ways, and the surprises were surprises in the boring ways (and occasionally bad too). And it just feels like they were willing to risk Ran and Kazuha's lives way too easily, like in ways that feel really out of character. Like this was a horribly disappointing way to end the case, especially considering the few good things in it.

Episode 969: The Young Kaga Lady's Mystery Tour (Part One)

-Time for a mystery tour. Where in Japan shall we go this time?

-"As usual, Ran won the grand prize in a lottery" Ran is now exceptionally lucky. Like is that how we got to past mystery tours and I just don't remember? I'd assume so, because that's a weird statement otherwise.

-Well Conan is the protagonist, so let's ask his opinion

-"Don't give us money!" - stupid people

-Well that thief clearly knew something, if he just happens to be stealing a bag and it has so much money.

-She's a rich girl and she's gone too far

-Have they ever acknowledged that hostages are still at risk even when they get the ransom? They must have, but I swear they always rescue the hostage beforehand or the hostage is actually released

-I like how when getting out of a hostage situation, you still make sure to politely knock first

-My immediate guess is that the kidnapping is a lie

-Ran, why are you happy that they are bringing in someone's boyfriend to be questioned about possibly being a kidnapper? "My boyfriend may disappear all the time, but he's better than being a kidnapper. Go me! : D "

-"I'm glad he didn't have a single scratch on him" My theory already seems fairly likely

-Oh ok we're solving part of this early! Again!

-Everyone is scared of one guy swinging a heavy bag!

Episode 970: The Young Kaga Lady's Mystery Tour (Part Two)

-There's always three suspects. There's always a lighthouse, there's always a man, there's always a city.

-"Hey, what jobs have we never looked into for this series?" "Traditional...Kanazawa gold foil crafts." "How did you think of that specific of one so quickly" "To be honest, I haven't a clue"

-Ok, he realized something before she slapped him.

-"You're well informed" understatement

-Not trying to hide the voice is certainly a change of pace. But why?

-Twitter for evidence, so stupid yet so believable

-That's the most threatening "naruhodo" Conan's delivered in quite some time

-I do like this last plot twist of "oh btw he was gonna kill again"

-Hilariously adorable and bad drawings presented as quality. It was funny in Bleach 15 years ago, its still funny now.

Well this case ended much better than the last one. The last one was more interesting I guess, but the most interesting parts were often the worst parts unfortunately. This was a bit more solid and well put together a narrative, and I nearly always like the kidnapping plots, and they had two this time!

Episode 971 – MPD Transportation Department (Part One)

"Recommendation to everyone who for some reason reads the comments before watching the episode: skip the scene before the credits. It's a scene they added that wasn't in the manga that spoils the heck out of the entire case." ?

I guess...I'll do that, random comment.

-Oh, oh no. It's this romance. Again. My least favorite thing in the series. And this is a long case.

-My dreams are also usually boring, to be fair

-She actually ran outside with toast in her mouth! Has that even happened with the high schoolers in this series?

-I'm not sure if I've thought of this before (this sub plot actually started 9 years ago, wtf), but this is a romance that began because he prevented her from crossing the street when there was a green light. That is without question, the lamest start to a relationship story I've ever heard. Like usually they start because the guy save the girl from an actual car, not from the possibility of a car.

-"You certainly are a female officer of the traffic department". I was gonna say basically this as a joke.

-Especially nowadays, its really weird seeing these callbacks to things, but they happened like a long, long time ago. To the point that you only barely remember them. I'm pretty sure Sato did dress like that before, but I can't tell you when.

-I'm really sad they don't use Takagi and Sato as a couple much anymore. They're the best couple in the series, probably by a significant margin. I want them back, they're lovely.

-I mean, she did just run outside with toast in her mouth. A justified comparison.

-It's somewhat rare to see other officers with actual names beyond the usual suspects.

-So I saw this anime fairly recently called BNA. It had this weird issue where almost no matter what, the exact same one song (the ED) kept showing up conveniently as in-universe music, without a 2nd in-universe song seeming to exist. Minor issue, but it just came off as contrived, especially since its kind of a plot point. So I do appreciate that Conan regularly changes songs and thus has some variety it can use for a karaoke scene. That being said though, this scene could use more EISUKE WITH MARACAS!

-This is honestly the first time she at least has a personality I could potentially latch onto. An immature girl whose quick to be sad over this non-relationship and can't even handle alcohol. It's at least something.

-See, even Shadowman knows you need to wear a mask nowadays.

-Paralyzed and about to be bludgeoned with a bat is pretty brutal compared to normal

-Wait did they actually kill that woman?

-I don't think the other cops are gonna take this lightly. That's honestly why I'm surprised she actually died tbh.

-Conan doesn't know, a rare moment.

-I love Haibara's look like "Yeah, another body. Ugh. I hope Kudo's done soon so we can get to school on time."

-Conan teasing Takagi is on a similar level of "I feel nothing about this anymore, murders just always happen."

-So when I do these numbers for the 2007 soundtrack songs, it does include stuff like...a song being used for 15 seconds. Which is funny, you might as well use incidental music at that point.

-"I find a kid who barges into a crime scene far scarier" ha

-Jesus, that thud as she fell. Brutal. Though I'm not sure about the editing implying Shadowman can fly

-Oh yeah, Kuroda...exists. Interesting to see if he'll have any significant role to play here
