Toho Cinemas Admissions (as of 2:30PM)

30,360 - Detective Conan

23,857 - Frozen

That's a pretty huge number for Detective Conan. Unlike Doraemon, it won't slow down drastically into the evening/night so 50,000+ for the day looks likely, and Sunday will be even bigger.

Lupin III vs. Detective Conan did 51,800 at Toho Cinemas on its first day then increased 9.9% on Sunday for 56,924, bringing its weekend to 108,724 admissions at Toho Cinemas and 539,132 admissions overall for the weekend.

Unfortunately, there's no data on how the Lupin crossover film did at the same point in time. Although, last year's Detective Conan film saw a bigger increase on Sunday than the crossover film (older fans of Lupin made the Sunday increase smaller) for comparison.

And that Frozen number is still huge, incredible consistency, down only 5% from last Saturday and could definitely still claim a sixth-consecutive week on top. It's going to be a close race.

Hollywood films have not been doing nearly as well as they did a few years ago (because of a change in consumption and an increase in Japanese production) : a few years ago, imported movies accounted for 60-65% of the consumption, last year they barely scraped past 30%.

However, Frozen is an exception and has been doing incredibly well with lots of hype and incredible consistency. I guess the 2 blond princesses thing appeals to the Japanese.

'Detective Conan - Dimensional Sniper' was at 50.454 admissions in Toho Cinemas by 7 pm. This means it has almost reached 'Lupin III vs Detective Conan's saturday number (51,776) before the evening sessions have even started. And with Conan movies always increasing on sundays, this is looking extremely good.

I've been following interviews from those big name mangaka and other similar people and almost all of them are hyping up Frozen so I guess mass follows...

But that's cool to see the movie do that well atm.

From what little I could decipher from your post, I can only respond that generalizations are not good (especially when expressed without punctuation). Frozen has grossed $400 million in the US & Canada, and... $700 million elsewhere in the world, making it the highest-grossing animated film of all time. I have zero interest in seeing Frozen, but even if it opened against my most anticipated film of the decade, I can't imagine resorting to leveling such misguided vitriol against it because it's in theaters at the same time as a Conan movie.

Frozen has, by all observable indications, struck a chord with audiences because it is fresh and new compared to movies that are being produced anywhere. That is why it is a worldwide hit. If you want to make a comparison on the level of "intelligence" involved in a Conan film and a CGI film of this magnitude's productions, I think we can safely say that a lot more goes into this sort of movie than does a Conan movie. Not that there's anything wrong with that--it's just a CGI movie of this scale requires many, many, many more people and a great deal more time to produce than does an annual Conan movie on a 9-10 month production schedule that follows a similar formula each year. The amount of technical expertise, ability, imagination, and production sensibilities involved in producing a computer-generated film like Frozen is on a level that all 18 Conan movies combined cannot even begin to approach; that's just being honest. I love Conan and will never see Frozen, but that doesn't mean I have to be like, "Baaah! Disney! How darez u hurt ma Conanz".

In short: There's no reason to dislike something (especially on hilariously misguided nationalistic lines) just because it is serving--even only tangentially--as "opposition" to something you already like. It's OK, trust me. There will be another Conan movie next year. There will be another one the year after that, too. There will be a Frozen 2 in a few years. These two franchises are not going to in any way meaningfully hurt each other, I promise.

On a more important point, though: You should always want media from other countries to succeed in international markets. Everyone is happy when a Miyazaki film is successful abroad, and that's a great thing. We are a global society on a level we've never seen before. Every country has something to contribute, so when PSY brought K-pop to the global scene that otherwise would have never had occasion to experience it, that is actually a great thing. It's important to expand your horizons and experience movies, music, TV shows, and books from all over, so promoting nationalistic silliness like, "Conan has to reign over Japan! How dare the American imperials make such an affront!" is just senseless.

Looking forward to your thoughts! If you don't mind, I know some people that are interested in the "plot implications" involving the wider Akai storyline, so if you don't mind reporting in on those, that'd be great (just to ensure all the details coming out are sound and confirmed, since this is all going to tie into the manga very soon, presumably, and it'd be good to have it all straightened out).

i do hope DC movie 18 does well enough i am getting fed up with Disney making cheap CGI films along with dreamwork making crap CHI films back in the good old days of prince of egypt and road to eldorado those were the best films of all time but now they are a shadow of their former selves and fired a lot of good people and left with young IT CGI people

2D animation still works in these days we dont need every single animation films to be CGI why cant 2D animation come back
IF anime films can be 2D then why US films be the same

this is why japan will always and forever be the leader and best country in film making and others and west makes cheap and crap films for mass audience

Toho Cinemas Admissions (Saturday)

63,689 - Detective Conan
56,681 (-1.6%) - Frozen

That's a massive first day for Detective Conan. It's the biggest Saturday at Toho Cinemas since The Wind Rises last Summer, and 23% stronger than the first day of Lupin III vs. Detective Conan last December.

It looks on course for 130,000+ over the weekend at Toho Cinemas
, so 650,000+ overall is doable. And 650,000 admissions would result in a weekend gross of ¥800-850 million ($8-8.5 million+), easily the best opening in the franchise and like 30% better than the average opening.

Frozen is still incredibly strong, too, barely dropping at all. If it's Sunday is equally as strong as last week's, it could see a sixth-weekend above ¥800 million, too!

But the weekend battle in admissions heavily favors Detective Conan
.

I'm not even sure it reaches the heights of 10 or 20 million. That seems awfully expensive given that the cost of a weekly episode is usually around $150-250k.

Just got back home from the Toho cinema in Tenjin, Fukuoka.

Now.. Before adding a few spoilers, I'd say my first hand impression on the movie atm (Still taking my time thinking about it, so please bear with me for now) is that it wasn't the best Conan movie out there, but it certainly wasn't the worst either! At some point I felt like it was dragging a little too much, but it did its best to keep up the pace by adding some action scenes in between.
Spoiler:
Like Sera getting shot by the sniper halfway through the movie

It could have used some more FBI action and less American voice actors/English speaking cast making it seem more like a comedy.. No really, I wasn't all that fond of the English speaking cast. It just didn't feel 'real'. IE: the voice acting felt rather sloppy whenever they were speaking in English, which they did quite a lot :-\ Kudos for using non-Japanese Engrish though!
- As with the FBI, Subaru deserved more screen time as well.. Though I'm pretty sure he satisfied most of the audience during the climax of the movie~ Speaking of climax! It felt shorter than usual, but more on that in the spoiler text!

Alrighty then, let's get started~

Improved gadgets:
Spoiler:
Detective badges - The Detective Badges got 'improved' with a minor add-on of small lights on the top of the antennas. While the light is on, a low frequency sound, which can only be heard by kids and teenagers/young adults (The Mosquito), will be active.

Anywhere Ball Dispensing Belt - The belt creates a soccer ball with fireworks inside. When Conan kicks it up in the air, it explodes and turns into colorful fireworks.

Turbo Engine Skateboard - This 'add-on' wasn't used in the movie, but at some point Agasa is seen working on the skateboard. During the short scene, it has some kind of wings popping out. (Now that could have been interesting)

Both the Badges and the Ball dispenser turns out to be crucial gadgets at the end of the movie.

The Climax - Please be aware that this contains spoilers about the whole ending of the movie!! You have been warned!!!
Spoiler:
As said before, I found the climax a little short this time. It wasn't as action packed as most of the Conan movie endings (Or maybe it just felt that way because I recently held a Conan movie marathon with all the movies containing long, awesome climaxes), and Conan didn't get to do as much as he usually do. While I did find that a little unfortunate, It was neat seeing Subaru in action! Been waiting for this for a looong time!

The climax takes place on the observation deck in the Tokyo Sky Tree, or Touto Bell Tree Tower, as it's called in the movie. The sniper/killer, Kevin Yoshino, has taken Ayumi as a hostage after fleeing from the top roof of the Bell Tree (Cause Subaru kicked his sniper butt, obviously!).. *Insert the mandatory use of bombs in every Conan movie* With a few pre-planted bombs, Kevin takes out the lights on the observation deck which leaves the FBI helpless inside the tower and prevents Subaru from sniping him any further.
He then uses infrared goggles to see his surroundings, this includes the people who's around him on the observation deck (Jodie, Camel, Ran, Sonoko and the Detective Boys). After some time, the Detective Boys manages to get Ayumi back with a little help from the recently improved Detective badges. Ran ends up being Kevin's next target, but is saved thanks to a perfect collaboration between Conan and Subaru 〜( ̄▽ ̄〜)

BOOM! Cut to the last few seconds of the movie:
Spoiler:
In the end James Black has been in contact with Subaru the whole time! (At least during this movie) Subaru has been using a bluetooth earpiece to communicate with James during the moment of the climax. - At this point James is thanking him for the good work, and Subaru replies in his own voice at first, but his last words are with Akai's voice!!! Da-da-duuuuuum!!! (THE END!!)

Soooooo!!! Subaru/Akai FINALLY decided to spill the beans for the fans during the last 5 seconds of the movie. Yes... The last FIVE bloody seconds! And tbh, even though it has been obvious for a long time, it still left me quite excited ;D
While most anime movies aren't seen as canon, at least the last part of this one will be, even if told in another way in the manga - Lets see how much longer Aoyama-sensei will keep us waiting for this moment in the manga.

- Got an early appointment tomorrow, so I'll get back to you later with some more in-depth talk about the movie ( ;´Д`) Also, I have a feeling Ssjup81 will be able to go more into details, so I'll leave that to him!

Last but not least: Not really a spoiler, but the picture is a little 'big'. I've taken pictures of the whole movie pamphlet. Unfortunately I don't have a scanner at my dorm in Japan, so I'm afraid they are all lousy cellphone pictures :| If you still want to see them despite this, please tell me and I'll get my butt in gear ASAP!

The movie will do well enough to warrant another movie, if that's your concern. That said, how well a movie does is no indication of how good it actually is.

2D animation doesn't work for Disney like it did in the past. They are moving on with the times so their movies can be accessible to both kids and adults. (you could probably google search and find better answers to why Disney does what it does)

Generalizing aside, the Detective Conan films definitely don't fit into the category of "critically acclaimed Japanese movies".

I almost want to make a list of all the cheap crappy films Japan is making on an annual basis.
