What was the worst Dub Name Change in your opinion?

I've noticed that a lot of people elsewhere on the Internet have taken issue with some of the dub name changes. I know I did. I cringed when I found out about some of the name changes, and my eyes still twitch when I'm sorting through fan fiction or something else and I come across those names.

So, which one was the worst for you?

I'm going with Booker Kudo for Kudo Yusaku as the worst. Booker? Booker. Harley Hartwell for Hattori Heiji is a close second...

All dub names are bad.
There is no such thing as "good dub name".

:P

It's a close tie between Harley Hartwell (Hattori Heiji) and Anita Hailey (Ai Haibara).  I'm leaning towards Heiji's, just because he's my favorite character, but I think Ai's might actually be worse.

Some of the names aren't that bad though, just not really production.  Rachel Moore isn't a bad replacement for Ran Mouri in all honesty.  Inspector Meguire instead of Inspector Megure is probably the easiest transition.  Amy Yaeger isn't a bad dubbed name either.

Oh, just thought of a REALLY bad one.  Commissioner Matsumoto was renamed to Police Chief Mcloughlin.  What the hell  =/

Of course, nearly every criminal got changed to common American names even if they sound NOTHING like what they were.

I heard they changed Gin and Vodka to like Kaspar and Melkior in the manga, but didn't in the dub. You wanna talk about bad name changes... Imagine how bad that will be once they really get going.

They did, but they didn't completely remove the Gin and Vodka part of their names.  It was more that they were more specific types.  In volume 12, they have Kogoro say he's drunk from "Melkior Gin" and "Kaspar Vodka", so it's a more specified version of their names.

I know the Case Closed TCG had to use the dub names on their cards, yet they could use Gin and Vodka on their cards rather than Melkior and Kaspar.

Yusaku Kudo --> Booker Kudo is pretty bad. Also, Ginzo Nakamori --> Mace Fuller, Ai Haibara --> Anita Hailey is also pretty bad.

Heh, seriously, the Spanish dub name changes are worse. I mean, seriously, Shinichi Kudo --> Bobby Jackson, and Ran Mouri --> Claudia Guzman? I'm glad the English name changes aren't THAT bad.

Ha! XD  I recall one of the Spanish Wiki articles detailing those dub names and I near fell out of my seat laughing.  Normally I'd use those in the FUNi dub's defense (next to the butchery of the One Piece dub by 4Kids), sort of like: "Well, at least they didn't call him Bobby Jackson."  Though "Jimmy" does sound overtly random, like they pulled it out of a hat.  ::)

Though the dub names don't bother me all that much; I kinda like some of them, actually.  I admit, I like "Rachel" a little better than "Ran" and "Mitch" better than "Mitsuhiko".  Save for a couple exceptions, a good portion of the names of the main characters are close to the Japanese counterparts.  The names don't effect *too much* of the story anyway.

Aside from that, the worst has to be Inspector Nakamori's dub name.  "Mace Fuller"; TMS probably pulled that gem out of the same hat as "Jimmy."  Kazuha's dub name in the TCG's doesn't sound too good either, as well as "Kaspar and "Melkior".  At least they're using the latter two loosely now.

Well, in their defense:
Ji sounds similar to Shi
m sounds similar to ni
my sounds similar to chi

Mace Fuller... sounds like something from Dick Tracy, one of the Simpsons detective episodes, or something like that.  It sounds so familiar, but I can't place it.  Either way it's so far off it's just wrong.

Yeah, if the TCG had gone on for one more set Kazuha would've had her card(s) made, and her name WAS horrible.  Katie Thompson.  *shiver*  Luckily, the manga kept her name as Kazuha Toyama.  Whether the anime will or not isn't known yet, since the manga is distinctly still set in Japan, whereas the anime may or may not be.

Booker Kudo... How lame could they get? Now I just feel sorry for Yusaku. And poor Gosho. His work is being slaughtered. Anita was also pretty bad... Takes away the Haibara effect.

Rachael, Mitch, Amy, etc. were okay. I figure that's as close as they could get. Jimmy - I still dislike that one.

But Harley Heartwell was the worst name. When I first read it, I was thinking "Okay, which of the girls is this one?" because I seriously thought it was a girl's name. Now, that's just about the worst insult someone can throw at Heiji. And he's among my favorite characters, too.

Really.

Harley Heartwell.

Mace Fuller *laughing* Nothing more to say.

Also... Katie Thompson!?!? No comments. I think it speaks the worst of itself.

And that's when I thought, for Case Closed - all hope is lost.

Then I can be happy that in german the names didn't change, just the pronunciation is awful sometimes. But they are cutting the episodes pretty often, and the specials as well, so that they fit into episodes.

The worst part of the name change is movie 2.  The reason Kogoro thinks the sommelier might be the next target is because of the number of years it took to get his certification rather than his name because with the change it didn't contain a number.  The reason Shinichi is a target is because "he comes in first in many things" because the number one is no longer in his name.  There are more outrageous examples, I just remembered these off the top of my head.  The name change ruined this film.  It just doesn't make sense anymore.

13 - first and last names add up to 13 letters
12 - name is from "queen"
11 - holds 11 patents
10 - 10th ranked
09 - owner of 9 buildings
08 - graduated from a school with an 8-year program
07 - has been a model since age 7
06 - has 6 children
05 - last name has 5 letters
04 - last name has 4 letters
03 - youngest of 3 siblings + they are spaced 3 years apart
02 - published 2 books
01 - an only child + is considered #1 in many categories

Even though many of these associations are silly, the worse part of the dubs for me is not the name themselves.  It is the voices.  Some are fine like Rachael, Meguire, and Agasa.  Problem is Conan and Richard are horrible.  Conan does not even sound like a boy.

I agree with you there.  But I think Rachel is the worst.  Ran is sweet and polite.  Rachel's voice gives the character a harsh sarcasm.  Also, Conan like Bart Simpson is a child male character with a female adult voice actress (Alison Retzloff).
