Sorry. Haven't really encountered anything lately. Don't know if there's anything between 225 and the bus hijacking, but even then, I think that's been covered here.

Aww, that's cool! I'm glad to know that your dad played them too!
Yeah.. they're kinda hard to play, but their sounds are so beautiful and.. soft; especially the zither! lol

AICHAN wrote: anyway, since when this topic turn into a flute topic?
Since I posted an Ai screencap and Conia commented about it.
Conia, you're the one responsible for this whole flute off-topicness. ;D

AICHAN wrote: personally when i use google translation and i type " Flûte" in french, the only answer i have is "flute"...
then if you want the technical word,it's"Flûte à bec" in french and "recorder" in English...
i think in common language people use the word flute...recorder is to specify what type of flute it is exactly...
so maybe the two words can be used... there's no need to argue that way XD
You got my point. Recorder (or fipple flute) is the technical or specific name of one type of flute.
But just because it's called "recorder", it doesn't mean it's not a "flute" anymore. xD
And I wasn't arguing, I was just discussing.. you know, it happens to me sometimes. ;D

James Rye wrote: I give you all cookies if you STOP off-topic talking right now, especially about flutes. it´s not funny anymore. So can we go back to the real deal and someone post a few screencaps of Ai and Conan, so that i can get some new ones for my album?
Off-topics aren't supposed to be funny. And, how come everytime I am part of an off-topic discussion, everyone's against it? Am I the only one here who's not allowed to go off-topic? There are many other off-topic discussions, even in this same thread, yet nobody's trying to stop them! Besides, you guys should also post screencaps from time to time, you know.. and not just blame me others for going off-topic because they're tired of being the only ones who have been posting them lately. *Is not angry* ;)

James Rye wrote: I mean, we cannot off-topic talking our way till page 50 so that Girl19 is forced to put all the caps till page 45. See, what i mean? 5 pages are missing!!!!!
Well, at least my off-topic discussion kept this thread alive for a while.
Oh well.. As I promised in my previous post, I'll be posting some more.

I wasn't going to reply since my off-topic discussions aren't welcomed here.. but I'll still gonna reply because I believe Kor and I had a good discussion going on which deserves to come to an end, at least from my side.

Warning: very, really long post!
And it's my last post talking about flutes, so YAY!

---------------

Kor wrote: But isn't this the seed of the discussion? You used the word "flute" which misled me to think that you mean to the flute which I play on. the reason I posted in the first place, was because the context didn't match because you said Haibara's flute. If it was of no relation to Haibara or that pic, I would have never known that you mean to a recorder, and would automatically think that you mean to a flute.
Whose fault is it, then? The english language is the one which gave us seperate words, thus creating this whole confusion.
There are other types of flute, but since the language gave us a specific word for a certain type, we need to use it. Otherwise, you're just calling "America" to your "USA" as well (if you speak english, that is).
I think you understood the opposite of the point I was trying to make. I'll try to explain more my point by the following.

Let's take a person X who lives in Canada. If X says: "I live in Amercia", we will get 2 kinds of reactions:
- Person Y would understand that X lives in the continent of America.
Therefore, Y would ask X: "Which country of America do you live in?".

- Person Z (which probably represents most people) would understand that X lives in the US.
Now, whose fault is it? Is it X's fault for not being specific enough, or is it Z's fault for forgetting about the real meaning of the word "America" and assuming it only represents a country while it actually represents a whole continent? Notice that X wasn't wrong. X was right because Canada is really located in America, and America≠USA. Maybe X should have been more specific since there are many people (like Z) who could be mislead, but X was still right. If other people like Z didn't develop that confusion about the word "America", X wouldn't have to be specific to start with.

Now, let's transpose this example to our situation.
  • X = Girl19
  • Z = Kor
  • America (the continent) = flute
  • The USA = the flute Kor plays
  • Canada = recorder (or "fipple flute")
Just replace everything and you'll see clearly what I meant.

I can imagine that I mislead you and I already said that I should have been more specific since the beginning. But the fact that I called it flute was not wrong, or let's say it shouldn't be wrong since a recorder is a flute, just like many other types of flutes. Saying "I play the flute" should mean "I play the flute in a general meaning", as if I didn't want to be specific. Now I didn't blame you for being confused (because that was my mistake), I only blamed you for saying that I was wrong. You should have asked me to be more precise, maybe by asking: "What type of flute do you play?"; and not say something like "What you play isn't a flute, it's a recorder. And what I play is a flute". What you did is just as if Z told X "You're wrong, you don't live in America, you live in Canada". I mean, hello, Canada is a part of Amercia; just like a recorder is a type of flute.

But the point where I agree with you is, since my flute has a specific name, I should use it (but I explained why I didn't use it and called it simply "flute": it's because in French it's called simply "flûte", so that's just a habit/influence anyone speaking mostly French would have). Still, I'll be using the specific name "recorder" or "fipple flute" from now on, just to avoid people being confused. On the other hand, I suggest you start calling your flute by its specific name too (I'm not sure but maybe it's called "transverse flute" or C flute" or "western concert flute" or something else? Well, you would know better since it's your instrument). Unless your flute doesn't have a specific name (which would be very weird), you shouldn't call it "flute" either if you don't wanna mislead other people.

Kor wrote: Yeah...that's exactly how I tried to treat you (Or more correctly I didn't)....too bad you didn't get the point at all and instead thought I was trying to insult you. It's a discussion - I'm not supposed to assume how much you know, and if I have something to say, I wanted to make sure that you would understand, by giving examples. Actually, exactly BECAUSE you have knowledge in music, I decided to give these examples and not explain any further.
Yes, I thought you were insulting me just like you thought I was insulting you before.
Seems like we both misundertood each other..

Kor wrote: Well, then we have something in common. I play as well more than half of my life, my mother is a musician (vocalist and a vocal teacher), my brother is a trumpet player, and my aunt and uncle are musicians too. I see in my music school many who didn't grow in the "world of music" and they have a much tougher time than moi.
I can imagine.. growing up in a musical environment makes things easier for us.
It's like we're being predisposed to learning.

Kor wrote: to put it simply, I guess you can call it a "pride over the instrument I play"
I have nothing against having some "pride over the instrument you play". But I still think you didn't need to get angry because my point wasn't to diss your flute by pointing out that it's just a type among many others. As I said before, I do believe that each instrument is unique and special, and I do respect all of them.

Kor wrote: please reread Callid's post (which I quoted). I just commented that I know he is correct and even gave an example from my experience why in german it's not obvious.
You're missing the point, which is the fact that your teacher automatically thought about the "recorder" when you mentionned the word "flute"; which contradicted what you said about people thinking of your type of flute more than any other type.
No, Kor is actually right. In Germany, everyone facing the word "flute" would consider it to mean a "Blockflöte", unless he has studied English.
"Blockflöte" means "recorder", right? Then you're just proving my point, which was the fact that a lot of people automatically think of the recorder when they face the word "flute". Kor said that most people would automatically think of his flute when facing the word "flute"; which was contradicting to what he said about his teacher before.

Callid wrote: However, this has nothing to do with the English meaning of "flute", but the fact that the recorder is the "(Block)Flöte" in German. So everyone would stumble about the fact that "Flöte" and "flute" are False Friends. You cannot call the flute "Flöte" in Germany, only "Querflöte" is right. Therefore, if a German not knowing this point would face "cross flute" and "flute", and were asked to decide whether of them meant "Querflöte", he would surely assume that "flute" would mean Flöte and "cross flute" would be the Querflöte.
Just to illustrate it, I'll post this question from the LEO dictionary forum:
LEO Forum wrote:

Hi, I'm searching for the right translation of "Querflöte". I know LEO says "German flute" or "transverse flute". I've asked an native speaker, he has never heard of both of them and said I should use "flute". But it's important for me that the people know that it is a "Querflöte". In my translation no context is given, the instrument is only listed.

Does someone know the really used words?

Thank you for the help.
penguin wrote:flute = Querflöte
Die Blockflöte ist ein recorder. Verwechslung also ausgeschlossen
flute = Querflöte
The Blockflöte is a recorder. So a confusion is impossible

Thank you very much for your fast help. My friend also told me the thing with the recorder, but I were insecure because I couldn't find it here for simply "Flöte". But it's there for "Blockflöte".
Indeed, LEO suggest all "flute", "pipe" and "whistle" for Flöte, but the only valid translation for "Blockflöte" is indeed "recorder".
I understand this info. But my point there wasn't related to their names and how they translate in both languages, it was about what people tend to think of when they face the word "flute". So yes, I was pointing out that people do confuse between them. Still, I find this info very interesting, considering that my knowledge in the German language is very basic. I got some new vocabulary, so thank you Callid. :)

---------------

Final point:

- There are many types of flutes.
- A recorder (also called "fipple flute") is a type of flute.
- But since it has its own specific name, let's start using it!
- Which doesn't mean that calling it "flute" is wrong. It's just generic and not specific enough to avoid confusion.

I'm done. No more flute discussion/reading from me. :-*
