I thought it portrayed her well... Maybe from my perspective. She always came off to me to be a little girly and sentimental and a little too attached to Shinichi, especially when she was around Sonoko...but she also seemed to kick butt when she needed to.
Also, Ran's role wasn't as important in the live action, so it didn't make a difference...but I at least thought she would be prettier...but she was pretty. I'm sure if she wore a beautiful ball gown we would be able to see her beauty better...
Shiho on the other hand is vain, but much more...dry and lazy looking...also she's older than Ran, so she has a much more mature figure I'm assuming Ran is supposed to be an average girl.

Well, it's a bit obvious that Ran behaves like a sissy when her beloved Shinichi is around, but even in manga she wasn't like that all the time. That girl in DC drama wasn't the best choice though, because she's not that characteristic like Sonoko and Shiho. She was the only character in drama which I couldn't accept at all - she's too plumpish, too weak physical and psychical (I just can't believe that Ran wouldn't yell at Shinichi when she saw him with other girl), Sonoko and Shiho are definitely more beautiful than her. Maybe it's also because the writer made her looks like that. If drama-Ran's character was more similar to manga-Ran, I would accept her easily.

When I saw Ran in the live action, first thing I thought was that this Ran looks like the one soratothamax describes in her arguments. No wonder she wrote what she wrote about her.
Every time I want to give up on DC, it manages to bring me back, it brings me back feelings I know that I will never ever feel or live again.

Yeah, it really depends on how we interpret Ran' character. I'd be glad if Gosho could tell, what was his intention with her character and are we thinking too much of her or too little.
Even if Ran's character description were like in the J-drama, that "actress" ruined it even more. Also, that Shinichi guy was not really like Shinichi either. But he was waaaay better than the others.
It was also stupid how those two "actors" tried to sound JUST like Ran and Shinichi. While this should be the case for GOOD actors (see - Kogoro's actor), for these two, it just made their acting worse.
The dialoge also didn't help. in the first live action, Shinichi concludes what Ran's panties color was, and later explains his deduction. In anime we might have thought this to be funny................actually the way the dialoge was written, we wouldn't have found this funny.......but at least we would have accepted it as it was. In a live action however, it's just disturbing. The pervert Shinichi can work in the manga/anime. But if we see a "live actioned" pervert, we wouldn't like it.
I already said in the Kaito Kid forum what it's like to see the first live action so I won't repeat it. All I have to say is that the mystery was rather poor because I kept begging it to end.
Regarding the second live action, at a certain point I believe the writers said "screw it! let's ignore the original characters and recreate them to fit this shit!" somewhere along the way, everyone started to act OOC
Shiho never quite felt to me like Shiho and was OOC at times. For example the B.O. member with the knife scene. ARGH it was so exagerated and didn't make any sense. Again, in the anime we can understand it and accept it, but when a real person suddenly stops moving and hugs herself (in such a stupid way) while a man approaches her with a knife.........that's stupid.
I'm not even going to start on Ran and Shinichi.
I just thought about it though - the actor of Shinichi is the japanese version of Tom Welling.

That gave me one of the weirdest images ever.
But yes, I completely agree. I think the biggest problem with the live action drama was that it tried too hard to be like the anime and that just doesn't work. I found the whole concept incredibly awkward. To me it seemed as if these actors were major fans of the anime/manga and took their obsession to a new level by putting on a live action, big budget, fan production. Some characters also bordered on the uncanny valley for me that and was also very uncomfortable.
These people do need to differentiate between live action and anime. Certain aspects do need to be changed. Unrealistic characters work in anime, however taking them exactly as they are into live action doesn't work.
As for Shinichi and Ran, I found Shinichi incredibly boring with no personality and Ran to be too weak and girlish.
