My answer is actually tied to my discovery of DC, since my first case was Heiji's first appearance. I had the impression then that male detectives didn't have love lives, and was shocked to see the ShinRan moments that time.

The 4th grade zira: OMG, there's romance here, why didn't anyone tell me?!?

I was touched by Shinichi's last thoughts before shrinking, and after a couple of youtube videos, I fell in love with this pairing!  <3_<3  I really loved their devotion to each other since nowdays I rarely see this kind of romance anymore(at least not in real life). And not to mention most girls nowdays have to have some kind of dark past just to be interesting...

I just thought it was silly-cute from the start. By the time potential alternative love interests turned up, I had ShinRan very deeply ingrained as the canon OTP. I like other couples in fandom (KAISHIN FTW ) but in canon, I want Shinichi to end up with Ran.
