Movie 14: ✩✩✩ (Loss of stars due to Conan and KID's interactions. I may like the idea of KID knowing due to figuring it out on his own, but Conan really hates KID. Between the Midair Walk mess and the Mystery Train mess the whole buddy-buddy vibe is just wrong.)
Movie 15: ✩ (Whole plot could've been solved by scuba gear, as Skye has noted in her recaps. Add in all the physically impossible stunts and I'm unamused...)

Movie 17: ✩✩✩ (Ran magically hearing that screaming is bull. Also couldn't stop laughing at the lady's eyebrows because they were so distracting.)

I've always been surprised by this as well. It's definitely the most contentious movie even amongst the most similar of fans (Dilbert and I have debated this one on several different occasions despite generally being in pretty close agreement on a lot of other Conan and non-Conan matters). There's something about this movie, in particular, that works for some people and really doesn't for others.

Well at least I agree that Movie 5 is one of the best movies. And I'm glad my rating helped keep Movie 14 from being rated below Movie 11

I'm not surprised about that. It's very different from other Conan films in tone and character. Some people like that, others don't. It's a recipe for a base breaker though. Also I would be wary of assuming box office returns = best liked. I think a lot of factors that are stronger than like/dislike influence box results - like what movies Conan is up against, the weather, etc.

The data seems to suggest that the supposed "falloff in quality" perceived by fans happened around movie 8 or 9 rather than 5 or 6.

12 and 2 were unexpectedly controversial. People seem to really love or hate them, with more people loving 2 and more disliking 12. 12 I can understand being controversial because it had a theme (classical music/singing) some people care about or just don't at all, had an odd climax, and gave Conan perfect pitch. 2 though... I would love to hear from someone who didn't care especially for 2 explain it.

Another thing I found interesting was how well 7 did. People usually talk about how great the first five + M13 movies are, and seven is neglected, but it pretty non-controversially settled into a "pretty good" ranking. I feel like this reflects Hattori in general. He rarely gets the hype other characters do, but most people sort of like him.

My big problem with 12 is that despite being a decently strong case and doing a lot of things right, too much of it just bores me and not enough is my type of thing to fully make up for that. I'm not sure how much of that is the theme, but I think it's just mostly like that Baseball stadium case. A good case that was presented in a way that just isn't that exciting even by normal murder mystery standards. At least from what I remember. Not sure I could explain beyond that though...


I don't get movie 2 either. I assume it isn't a fandom related thing as much as some people just don't find it that interesting? Just a general movie preference type of thing I guess. I personally love it.

Another thing I found interesting was how well 7 did. I've actually thought about this before. I've always found the plot to be really, really convoluted and agree that it's almost entirely on it being a Hattori movie. Unlike Kid, we've not really been saturated with Hattori in the movies. In Movie 3, he had what could only be described as an extended cameo (whereas Kid was in the entire movie). In Movie 7, he was basically the entire focus, getting most of the glamor moments that Conan usually gets (which I think is actually a good thing). In Movie 10, he appeared only half-way through, and in Movies 13, 14, and 17, he again had cameos. Kid has appeared way more often as the focus of movies, so it seems that Hattori hasn't reached that sort of level just yet.

Overall, I think Movie 7 had the potential to be something quite good, but the plot was just too dense with clues that weren't really applicable to a very wide audience or, for that matter, something that can really be reasonably solved by the viewer even if they're familiar with a great deal of Japanese history/culture.
