Well, at this point parting with a non-main character will feel trivial and parting with a main character will seem cheap. He just hasn't done it to now so it would be out of style for him.

Plus, with the whole thing going on now, nobody would take the death seriously or at face value.

I think there are two type of ending.

1) Ai die for Conan instead Ran.

2) Ran die for Canan instead Ai.

In these cases, Ai might love Conan. The only problem is she's not showing it to her.

The way I see it, the moment one of the main characters die, the series will be at its final stages - Nemuri no Kogoro will be no more, that's for sure; the Shounen Tantei Dan getting dangerously closer to the Black Organization, etc. If we're to anticipate a showdown, it'll be even cheaper if everyone came out alive against an organization that manages to assassinate people without leaving a trace. Something has to give...

I agree that a main character death might make it MORE serious. It would have worked better with InuYasha if half of the main character deaths hadn't been Kikyo (again).

Ai almost die several times already, so it'll be weird for me if she really die in the end.

She's easier to die in my opinion at the end due to her dark background...

Well.... This isn't really supporting aicon, but the most likely ending is this: BO is defeated, ai makes antidote, conan takes antidote, returns to being shinichi and hooks up with ran, while ai remains as a kid to stay with the dboys and have the childhood that she never had.

the preferential aicon ending would be the same EXCEPT the antidote doesn't work because he had built up an immunity like ai said he would and remains as conan, with no other choice he hooks up with ai, and shinichi is pronounced dead.

Neither do I but as I said, it is the most likely ending... That way the DBoys have SOMEONE that will keep them from getting into too much trouble.

There's pretty much no chance of an AixConan ending - like I said before, look at the openings/closings, they are most shinran-spectacular things ever.

Maybe Gosho/the Anime team could release an alternative ending OVA or something, just to please the other side of his fans.  But then, people will go crazy in debating which is canon, while Schillok argues that both aren't real

Though I'm more inclined to believe that by the end of the series, Mitsuhiko would be the next detective following in the footsteps of Shinichi, Heiji, etc. without needing Ai to be around to keep them from getting into too much trouble. If they knew the truth that Conan and Ai are Shinichi and Shiho, something might trigger in them that would change them and set their aspirations or something.

I think Ai would never stay as a kid if Conan go back to become Shinichi. I still believe her word that she can bear being a kid because Conan is around. Fact is better than assumption. Except she say otherwise, I can't believe she'll stay as a kid.

If she gets her body back, I'm thinking she'll either still live with Professor Agasa or keep in touch with him if she decides to live elsewhere (assuming she doesn't die) - he is after all her father/grandfather figure.

I always felt that she'd stay a kid. Miyano Shiho just has nothing waiting for her except probably a jail sentence for dangerous drug experimentation. If Shinichi returns to normal, you just know he'll go back to Ran, so it's not like there's anything to wait for her there. But she seems happy with her new "family", her friends, and a life relatively free of the BO's shadow and influence.

Knowing Shinichi, if it ever came to that, we'd expect him to somehow give her up to authorities, with him getting broken up about it of course. As a detective, that is something he just couldn't overlook.
