So this question is now a yes: Did John get too far from the spaceship to be able to get back in time?

Maybe I should explain this question And I will use diving as a example. A driver has say 4 hours of air. Thet can go for a walk of say a an hour and 50 minutes before they must turn around and come back. If they were to got say three hours away from the ship, They would only have anhour of air left and there is a good chance that they will not be able to get back without help or else being given more for the return trip.

So the only things to figure out are what John need to walk to to repair, and how he ran out of air.

Did he have his suit damaged while doing the repair?
Did John try to get help?
Did a important and repairable part of the ship land far from the ship?

It not I do not want to guess, it is finding the time to guess. Please the answer to the part I was missing.
I can guess that because of the crash and a crucial part that only landed too far away, John tried and failed to get that part and so the hope of rescue was killed, Jim decided to end it all rather then wait to die, as with John dead, there is no chance of rescue.
But that does leave questions. First if John try to get the part and got to the halfway point and it was still rather away, why Did John not give up there and then? After all while there is hope, there is life, and when Jim became hopeless, he killed himself. Was John kidding himself think that getting that part would give them hope? Was only John skilled enough to make the repair. If so, then why not send Jim to get that part, meaning if Jim failed, that John might have a go? What was the part that John failed to get? John died because of an accident, that likely involved that part causing his suit to become worthless and to no longer work. Anyway, If you wish to take the above as a guess, then do so, other wise please answer the questions and then tell us the missing parts. Thanks

sstimson: don't overthink it

John and Jim were alone on a mission to mars, John was the pilot. They landed (rather roughly) on Mars. Since they had to repair the spaceship from the outside, they both went outside. They both didn't realise that John's suite had a hole until it was too late. Jim couldn't fly the spaceship alone even if he could repair it. Additionally, there were no other spaceships that could reach them before his oxigene and/or proviant ran out. Meaning, he was trapped on mars alone with limited proviant and oxigen. Thus, he decided to kill himself rather than dying a long and painfull death

OK, I'll post one. It's very easy.
You've got nine diamonds and one of them is false. The only difference is that the false one wheights less. You've got a balance but you can only use it three times. How do you know which diamond isn't real?

easy (you actually only need it twice)
You make three groups with three diamonds in each.
You measure group one against group two
when one is lighter, you only nead that one, if they weight the same, use the unweighted group for the next step.
then you take the lightest group and measure two of the diamonds.
when they weight the same, the unmeasured is the fake one. when one is lighter, that one is the fake.
