Must clarify a few things...

1) The MPD doesn't REALLY take advice from Conan... Usually he says something that leads them in the right direction and the police think he is just being an observant kid... Usually the police don't even want him there... As a teenager they do... and even seek his help. Still unbelievable... but really... I had stated that Conan was not too great on that aspect either. Gosho does it better with Mouri, having clients hire him, then some greater crime happen, seeing as he is still under wage, he has to finish his investigation [which Conan usually does for him]. Much like in Sherlock Holmes, the police never really call Holmes, in fact most don't like him or his methods, but the clients do when either the police fail or they can't turn to the police. The whole idea of some law enforcement agency seeking out the aid of a kid [shinichi], or private detective [L or mouri] is still ridiculous to me... They wouldn't do it... Again... it is about pride... They want their name on the news report, they want the credit. And it is only natural too... Consider this... EACH AND EVERY AGENCY gets funding based upon success... If Interpol does good and catches an international criminal... They get more funding, likewise for the FBI, CIA and the various police departments.

2) Shinichi is LOOSELY based upon Holmes. So the theory is know what you'll use and forget everything else. I think Conan follows this principal... He'll remember what he needs for school then promptly forget it when he no longer needs it. But all other knowledge that seems esoteric, that he feels will be useful to him he remembers. [that is my theory on why Shinichi is so smart, and it is as good a theory as any at this point] L on the other hand...well we don't know much about him... so I won't get into it.

3) You can't say Kira is more dangerous than the BO... Here is why...
- Kira can't exist... The death note is purely science fiction
- Even if Kira did exist, if he was doing it for justice there would be no danger except those who commit crimes and those who get in his way [which I suppose would put me in danger since I am going into forensics, but I digress]
- BO is possible to exist [with the exception to APTX4869, but there ARE undetectable toxins out there... why Gosho probably didn't use one of those because a) it would outright kill the protagonist and b) destroy a major plot point [If I am not mistaken blue octopus venom is not detectable after a certain amount of time, as well as some other natural venoms]
- BO has people infiltrating many different areas of the world... They have agents everywhere, and are highly organized and international.
- Hell... even Kira couldn't kill them since he wouldn't know their names [most of them anyway]. But I assure you they would seek out and kill Kira, and with guys like Gin, Vermouth, and Bourbon, they'd probably find him eventually using all of their resources... Though it is also likely that they'd try to recruit him, but Light would likely refuse, and then the person making the offer would kill him, and again, seeing as how Light would not know their real names there is no contest on who would win.

Ok... I think I am done with this debate... Still like DC more than DN... it is just more appealing to me...

ranger wrote: The main reason why L is the better of these two brilliant detectives is because Shinichi, like I said, has too big of an ego that really bites him in the ass.  Sure L has an ego as well, like how he showed himself as L to Light, but that was a cunning strategy.  There are numerous examples when Shinichi just goes head in w/o thinking.
Main example, of course, is episode 1...blindly going in to spy on 2 mysterious men in black, which could of have caused his death.  Another example is episode 311 (the Dark Footprint).  Conan, cocky as usual, thinks his plan will go perfectly and hides in the locker room as Gin and Vodka approach.  However, his plan goes awry, and nearly gets himself killed again.
Right. And every time Conan almost magically survives as the main character should, his personality matures a bit more. Slowly building up anti-BO knowledge from his stupidities toward a grand finale, I wish.  ;)
Normally I wouldn't involve myself in this sort of thing, but these two statements made me think of something interesting. The problem with your argument, Guy-Who-Likes-Kudo-Better, is that Kudo is forced to follow the pattern that you'd expect from a character-driven anime because of his rash decisions. Don't get me wrong, I do love the show, and I loved The Dark Footprint, but the writing/character development in Conan isn't nearly as original as Death Note's. To me, L comes out on top because he's more of an anomaly.
First of all, I'm not a guy.  ;) I do love Death Note so please don't get me wrong either. I just don't get the hype over L.
Spoiler:
The character development in Conan is very good, IMO. It ranges from minor to major with enough back-stories that are actually shown in the episodes. Conan has grown less arrogant. Even the DBs have their own tiny changes, well, except for Genta. Haibara and Kazuha have warmed up to Ran. Kogoro occasionally show moments of brilliance. Hattori fosters friendship with hints of good rivalry with Kudo. (I consider these last two examples as part of character depth instead.) The best thing is that they all go back to their old ways or revert to their lovable/hateful attitudes somehow sometimes. It makes it all believable since humans don't really change easily. But, I haven't seen Sonoko go guy-hunting in a very long while. Thank Gosho (kami  ;D) for Makoto! Ran is one of the least developed characters but she's the resident tsundere, who's actually deredere 90% of the time. So, I guess that's it for her unless she finds out FOR GOOD that Conan = Shinichi not at the very end. That'll be interesting somewhere in the middle, like NOW maybe. I have deep respect and empathy for those who've watched DC since their childhood.
I've experienced (i.e. watched or read) a relatively few number of detective stuff and they're all fiction but I'll try to make popular reference to at least one for each. Regarding the originality of the characters themselves, what do the following criminal deduction otakus have in common?

L (Death Note)
Gil Grissom (CSI)
Sherlock Holmes

Answer: They're all antisocial.

Doesn't that make Kudo Shinichi the anomaly for being popular in school? And a refreshing one at that?

He has his soccer buddies and fangirls. He does have antisocial tendencies when it comes to reading, to which his being somewhat of a know-it-all can be attributed, I guess. But, reading is a very normal thing. On the other hand, Grissom has the bugs, Holmes loves his cocaine and L enjoys more than enough sweets to fuel his brain.

The only other quirk I can remember for L is his feet/toe rubbing, which is kinda similar to Holmes' need to draw up his knees and put his fingertips together. Nothing ill meant, feel free to butt in with another. ;D

1. Clow Reed - Cardcaptor Sakura and TRC. He only ever appeared in flashbacks, and is dead in every single story he appears in (beside that Mokona story thing), but he never fails to be awesome. Possibly BECAUSE he never appears, and I can just pick and choose his qualities - but I still adore him.
2. Xellos  - Slayers.
3. Sakurazuka Seishirou - Tokyo Babylon / X .
4. Kurama  - Yu Yu Hakusho.
5. Kudo Shinichi / Edogawa Conan
6. Nagisa, Kaworu  - Neon Genesis Evangelion
7. Kuroba Kaito
8. Bonten  - Amatsuki.
9. Taiki  - Juuni Kokuki.
10. Kinomoto Sakura - Cardcaptor Sakura

1. Lupin the Third
2. Goro (MAJOR)
3. Conan
4. Light (Death Note)

I was reading through this topic and realized my list was going to be a little stale. I could fill up the remaining spaces with some honorable mentions, but it'd be the rest of the Lupin regulars, Vermouth, and Satou (from MAJOR, not Conan :P).

Also, shame on you cats for not including Lupin. None of you!? :'(

Wow a Major fan! There are only few sports-anime fanatics I'm able to encounter online...

Anyways, Satou is the previous catcher of Shigeno, right? Satou became pretty annoying when they were no longer a tandem (e.g. the scene when the bus was about to leave and it's raining - but Satou could have done what he did on purpose)... But that's just me...

I did Jd-.... I included everyone except fujiko from Lupin's crew... And even she and Zenigata ended up on my Honorable mention list... Which is funny since no one from DC made it to my list other than Haibara and Kid.... As much as I love DC, Conan/Shinichi doesn't stack up to the rest...

Also... Don't lie Jd- you know you meant to put "2. Goro (MAJOR and DC)" We all know you support the Goro is the BO Boss theory!

Satou (aka Toshiya) is indeed the one you speak of. All things considered, MAJOR is my favorite of the few animes I have seen. I <3 baseball and I <3 well-written and well-paced drama, all of which is done superbly in the show. I don't like any of the other sports animes I've sampled nearly as much, but there may be another dynamite one out there that can rival it--I just haven't seen it yet.

Of all the sports storyline, Major is probably on the top... It's because it began when Shigeno was still a child and as the story progresses so as his career in baseball... A close second on the storyline is Hajime no Ippo aka Fighting Spirit aka Knock out! (in PH)...

The problem with other sports anime is that it focus on a certain part of a career of an athlete, normally the high school varsity stage... But a plus points to other sports anime series are the tons of wonderful characters you can relate to (e.g. Prince of Tennis, Eyeshield21, Slam Dunk)...

Cannot, because I have not seen Slam Dunk. In fact I hate sport fiction. With passion.
