Fanworks Recommendation Thread
Starting up a thread for this. People can suggest their favourite fics here along with the fandom (with a summary if it's available and a warning for any age ranges higher than PG-13) then I'll collect them all together in the first post under headings for the fandom. I seriously doubt it's going to go over the word limit with this, but better safe than sorry so I'm reserving the next two posts below this one in case I run out of space.

Fandoms will be placed in alphabetical order, with no distinguishing between the type of work (e.g. anime, books, films) the fanfictions are based on. If anyone has any suggestions how to improve the layout, please say so :).

Art recommendations are also appreciated, but for now only fanfiction will be added to the first post. Also, I've not yet decided how to format author recommendations so until then they'll also be left out, but still feel free to give them.

Detective Conan
A Witch's Apprentice by sonoci
Recommended by Raifuujin and Stopwatch
Summary: He doesn't believe in magic and yet Conan has become Akako's apprentice. As his own powers slowly unravel, they'll cause events that'll change the future, rekindle the past and bring light to the present.

It's Raining Men, Hallelujah by Asuka Kureru
Recommended by Stopwatch and mangaluva
Summary: Conan already has some kind of corpse magnet power, but when Heiji is in his orbit the corpses actively come to them. From above. Witness.

Nerves of Steel by Ellen Brand
Recommended by Raifuujin and Stopwatch
I will have what is yours... Somebody just sent Kuroba Kaito a heist note. And the treasures being targeted are very precious indeed...

Sugarhigh by Teah no kitsune
Recommended by Raifuujin and Stopwatch
Prank Code Bouncing Shrimp: Prank set successfully, target not suspecting anything unusual. Use Tantei-han for trust-oriented pranks on Tantei-kun in future, much better than the idea of an old woman offering him pie on a street. -Title says it all.

Three Thieves by Ysabet and Rednightengale
Recommended by Raifuujin and Stopwatch
Warning: M rated
Adversaries can become acquaintances and acquaintances can become friends; it takes time and it's difficult, but anything is possible- especially for Kudo Shinichi and the Kaitou Kid.

When Pandora's Box is Opened by mangaluva
Recommended by Raifuujin and Stopwatch
After two long years as Conan, the time has finally come for the ancient battle to come to an end, and fate will determine whether the Silver Bullet will survive the shot, unless Shinichi can put his faith in the enemy that was destined to be his ally...

Discworld
The New Verse by samvimes
Recommended by pofa, kirite and mangaluva
Summary: There's a new verse to an old song about the Patrician, and Vimes isn't happy about it...

Sherlock (BBC)
A Brief Account Of Life With Zombies by Silver Pard
Recommended by mangaluva and Stopwatch
Summary: Sherlock thinks it's all a bit of a nuisance, John is having the time of his life, and Mycroft is Not Impressed. With anything, but mostly his minions' inability to provide a good cup of tea. Sherlock/World War Z crossover.
Jawn of the Dead by ??? (anon)
Recommended by Stopwatch and mangaluva
Summary/Prompt: Sherlock comes home to 221B after faking his death. John and Lestrade had just been watching Dawn of the Dead, while drinking, so they think Sherlock is a zombie and keep trying to kill him. Again.

Seems So Easy for Everyone Else by etothepii
Recommended by Stopwatch, Raiden and mangaluva
Summary: He signs his correspondences to the police as Sherlock H, as he always has, and he signs his letters to his parents as SH -- they can take what they will from the S. He signs his school assignments S. Holmes, and manages to get away with it because he is the only Holmes in his classes. FtM!Sherlock.

The Uncanny Mrs Hudson by ifonlynotnever
Recommended by Stopwatch and mangaluva
Summary/Prompt: Mrs Hudson knew precisely what kind of person she was offering tea to.
The assassin, however, did not know what she'd added to the tea.

I've only been reading in the DC fandom so far so...

Three Thieves by Ysabet and Rednightengale Warning:M rated
Co-written by Ysabet and Rednightengale. Adversaries can become acquaintances and acquaintances can become friends; it takes time and it's difficult, but anything is possible- especially for Kudo Shinichi and the Kaitou Kid.

A Witches Apprentice by sonoci
He doesn't believe in magic and yet Conan has become Akako's apprentice. As his own powers slowly unravel, they'll cause events that'll change the future, rekindle the past and bring light to the present.

When Pandora's Box is Opened by Mangaluva
After two long years as Conan, the time has finally come for the ancient battle to come to an end, and fate will determine whether the Silver Bullet will survive the shot, unless Shinichi can put his faith in the enemy that was destined to be his ally...

Nerves of Steel by Ellen Brand
I will have what is yours... Somebody just sent Kuroba Kaito a heist note. And the treasures being targeted are very precious indeed...

Promenade by Ocianne
MK KH crossover. "There are more things in Heaven and Earth..." and Kaito's on a trip through all of them. Can he deal with a broody black-cloaked stranger, a stubborn detective, and his world repeatedly turning upside down and still keep what's left of his sanity?

Sugarhigh by Teah no Kitsune
Prank Code Bouncing Shrimp: Prank set successfully, target not suspecting anything unusual. Use Tantei-han for trust-oriented pranks on Tantei-kun in future, much better than the idea of an old woman offering him pie on a street. -Title says it all.

And as I've only really just started my list of longer fics, there will probably be more recommendations later. Also, Sugarhigh is just random and funny. It begged to be put here, for some reason. :V

Awesome, I got recced :D

YuGiOh fics
My Dark King by Masterdramon
YuGiOh 5Ds AU. In a world where Dark Carly succeeded in turning Jack to her side, the remaining Signers are left bereft and hopelessness descends. Earth's only chance for survival lies in the love that the Dark King and Queen share; a love that has survived even death.
Features over 100 characters from the first three series of YuGiOh, all beautifully characterized. The story is dark and massive and currently still in progress. Chapters are huge but so worth it!

Detective Conan fics
Birds of a Feather by Key-chan
Massive Detective Conan AU. They were part of the Organization's scientific test subjects. And now they've escaped. Four teenage boys are trying to live normally, but with the Organization trying to take them back it's not that easy.
Also currently a work in progress, updating roughly monthly due to the size of the chapters.

Sherlock fics
Alone on the Water by MadLori
A ridiculously sad but beautiful fic wherein Sherlock is diagnosed with a terminal disease and decides how to spend his last days. It's really well-written, but you will cry forever.

SM Case Files by lilyankh
There are some things in this world that we were never meant to understand.
Sherlock/Slenderman crossover. You heard me.

A Brief Account Of Life With Zombies by Silver Pard.
Sherlock thinks it's all a bit of a nuisance, John is having the time of his life, and Mycroft is Not Impressed. With anything, but mostly his minions' inability to provide a good cup of tea.
Sherlock/World War Z crossover. Ridiculously hilarious. I just reread it for the fiftieth time and I'm still dying of laughter.

Recommended authors
Everything by Candyland, Dragon-sama, StargateNerd, KCS, Morgan Stuart, Public Displays of Lust, White Mage Koorii, Pantydragon, LittleKuriboh and Shooting-stetsons I would highly reccomend

Just occurred to me that a filter may be good to get the very best ones and make it so the list isn't quantity over quality (though most fics just recc'd would be at least decent anyway). As in, if a person recs something it has to be seconded to get onto the list. I can second everything Rai's put down because I've read them all apart from Promenade because of the crossovers (though Manga, rewriting WPBIO now you have more experience would be awesome *_*) and Brief Account Of Life With Zombies is one of my favourite crack fics so I can second that too.

Also, I've got to remember to add the author's name. Can't believe I left that off. I'll edit the first post to comply with the new 'rules' and offer up these fics, except for the last two which are DC and Torchwood fics, these are all Sherlock ones.

Proxy by smilebackwards
Summary: "I vastly underestimated Mycroft's capacity for guilt," John says.

Shadows on the Wall by AraSigyrn
Summary: John came back from Afghanistan psychic. Spoilers to The Great Game. Powers. One-sided John/Sherlock, Episode retelling of ASiP.

The Uncanny Mrs Hudson by ifonlynotnever
Summary/Prompt: Mrs Hudson knew precisely what kind of person she was offering tea to.
The assassin, however, did not know what she'd added to the tea.
Jawn of the Dead by ??? (seriously, it was anon)
Summary/Prompt: Sherlock comes home to 221B after faking his death. John and Lestrade had just been watching Dawn of the Dead, while drinking, so they think Sherlock is a zombie and keep trying to kill him. Again.

Aptronyms by aheadofthecurve
Summary: Mr Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson are characters created by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle; Mr Sherlock Holmes and Dr John Watson are the unfortunate sods named after them (AKA a rather strange AU of 2010 Sherlock). A little meta. A lot of fun. Humor.

It's Raining Men, Hallelujah by Asuka Kureru
Summary:
Conan already has some kind of corpse magnet power, but when Heiji is in his orbit the corpses actively come to them. From above. Witness.

Pocket Watch Boy by Mhalachai
Summary: Ianto Jones is a very different sort of boy. (wee!Time Lord!Ianto)

EDIT: No one's seconded this so just putting it down here.
The Forty-Seven Deaths of Ianto Jones
Summary: Jack can't watch Ianto die again, so he does what he has to do, but it starts a cycle he can't bring himself to break. Post CoE. Dark!Fic.

Post by mangaluva »

I've read The Uncanny Mrs Hudson, Jawn of the Dead and It's Raining Men, Hallelujah before and would like to second them all.

I would also like to take this post to recommend some of my absolute favourite Nuzlocke runs.

Landwalker's Emerald and Yellow Nuzlockes
The first one, the Emerald Nuzlocke, starts off with perhaps a lot to be desired in terms of story and art, but it's incredible how much it evolved by the end of the run and the conclusion of the game plot and E4 are nothing short of epic.
The yellow run is very different; it starts with a strong story and has some very interesting twists on the game's plot, particularly concerning Blue's family. Also, the Pokemon are much better characterized and I love Apollo and Matt in particular.
Emerald is complete, Yellow is ongoing.

Chachiko's Soulsilver Nuzlocke
An adorable Nuzlocke characterized by random switches to ginjika art style. The Pokemon never actually turn human, the art style just depicts them that way on occasion for fun. It's ongoing and the major secrets concerning Crystal's father and why she can talk to Pokemon have yet to be revealed.

Cocoaferret's Emerald Nuzlocke
This is one of my absolute favourites. Alexial herself is a brilliant protagonist and her Pokemon are varied and unique in character. The run is frequently hilarious (her reaction to catching Alejandro the shiny Lotad stands out in my mind XDXDXD) but has some very serious undertones, particularly concerning the ever-mysterious Steven Stone and poor, abused Brendan (it's just about the only love triangle ever that I actually like).

Earlgrey's Gold Nuzlocke
This is one of the best ginjika runs ever. The way the world is built and the Pokemon are humanized is genius. You will not be able to help finding Diego awesome. Another one of my absolute favourites and I think I have to go reread it right now just because I can.

Sanpincha's Gold Nuzlocke
The other best ginjika run ever. It actually takes place in the same universe as Earlgrey's and each run's protagonist has appeared in the other's comic. Like Diego, you will not be able to help finding Chel awesome, and the ginjika designs are very creative. The story looks like it's really shaping up to be something else, too.

Petty's Leafgreen and Heartgold Nuzlockes
Petty is the reason I know Nuzlocke exists. Her art style is adorable and the characters are brilliantly well-done, particularly Gary. The Heartgold run is a direct continuation of the Leafgreen run with the same main character and a few familiar faces showing up for the ride.

I'll probably add more, but seriously, I just started rereading Earlgrey's run. "Douchebag nature"  :D  :D  :D

This one is incredibly short, but..
Unnamed prompt fill by ???
Summary/Prompt: John gets kidnapped by Mycroft on a regular basis to the point of being able to predict when the car will pick him up. Cue him distractedly checking his schedule for someone and accidentally telling them that "nope, tomorrow's bad, I've got a kidnapping at four and I never know how long those take".

And this is somehow not crack and it's Mycroft/John/Mycroft yet it's just kinda amazing :x.
When I Look in the Mirror I See Double by etothepii
Summary/Prompt: Summary: Mycroft and 'Anthea' are one mind in two bodies. Literally.

Just dropping in to advocate a comic I adore: Black Adventures. I can't even tell you how ridiculously funny it is. This is pretty much the single best thing in the entire Pokemon fandom. It starts off utterly bizarre, but when it develops plot and discovers character development it's really, really good.

Also, if you've ever watched Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt... well, Black and N's first transformation sequence made me die with laughter. Then laugh myself back to life. Then asphyxiate again.

It's been a while since I've been into the fanfic scene, so these are all pretty old, but:

Xanthic Growlithe Contract
Xanthic Growlithe Contract: Johto
(Pokemon) A masterpiece and its sequel. The story takes about 5 (very short) chapters to get its feet underneath it, but once it does it doesn't let up. The sequel hasn't been updated in a while, but she's picked it back up after years before, so I'm hopeful. And even if she never does, the original stands alone as a great fic.

A Babel Braid
Death Note one-shot.

Eleanor Rigby
Cowboy Bebop one-shot, post-series. Dark, referential, and real easy. Ff.net's random code changes have messed with the punctuation since it's been written, but if you can get past that, it's a rewarding read.

The New Verse
(Discworld) Heh.

Classic <3.

Don't read too much, and please don't mind weird pairings, I hardly read because of specific pairings (I just randomly click on things and hope for the best actually lol).  That's how I know fanfiction is pretty much a cesspool with occasional shining gems floating among the poos.

With that said I read a lot for a while to learn English so I'll recommend 1 fandom at a time:

Final Fantasy 7:

This Army life - by Nicolle  PG-13 with plenty of snarkiness.

CRACK:  A prequel to the game.  Sephiroth and Zack are generals invading Wutai.  In other words they go AWOL and d-ck around as much as possible because Shinra is an idiot who can't tell North from West.  Deep friend chocobo wings are delicious.

Why Waist Length? - by Silver Pard  Rated T

CRACK: Seph contemplates his long silver hair... I kinda imagine Gin talking in this fic sometimes....

Sunshine in Winter- by Guardian1  Rated T

ANGST/DRAMA:  Yuffie/Vincent fic.  Yuffie gets very sick and Vincent grows a heart.  Can get quite sad but very excellent.
Hey, I have an idea, let's have a THIS SUCKS / NO THIS SUCKS / NO YOU / NO YOU argument for a couple pages, that will really be great. - Ingmar

How I Met Your Mother
Barney Stinson: God Among Men by iamsanehonest
Summary: Barney Stinson was a god among men. It was just a fact of life that he had long since made his peace with.

The Best Armor by aperfectsong
Summary: "Robin has always been one of those people who are strong because they pretend to be strong. It is an art she has perfected since childhood, something so ingrained in who she is that she barely notices it anymore - the image she puts forth and the one she hides." Spoilers "Big Days" through "Glitter."

Number Sixty Six by stablergirl
Summary: None given, but it's basically around Robin's dad coming down to see her and the issues it causes. Robin/Barney. Warnings for abuse and some kinda violence.

Behold These Shards and Cinders by cinaed
Summary: There are many stories Ted will tell his children. This isn't one of them.
(Apocalypse-type fic, no real pairings)

Lie to me one more time by stablergirl
Summary: None given. Post The Playbook.

Roulette by idioticonion
Summary: Barney gambles with his life.

A Nice Day by museandblabber

Deal by drizzlydaze
Summary: Definitely AU. Oneshot. Barney Stinson makes many deals. But he's never sealed a deal like this before.

Saved, Unpublished Blog Post by CadetDru
Summary: Barney's Saved, Unpublished Blog Post. Bad language. And thoughts.

^You have to log into AO3 to read this FYI.

Like the border between Greece and Albania by irishmizzy
Summary: That time Robin and Barney had an affair that no one ever knew about. (AU Season 3 through "Dowisetrepla")

you're Gonna Need a Forklift 'Cause All the Baggage theyighs a Ton by cinaed
Summary: Truth: have you ever been physically attracted to me?

Charmed
Ripping the Fabric of Reality to Shreds by katikat
Summary: My name is Chris Halliwell and I'm 16 years old as I write this.

^This is the closest to decent you will get in a Charmed fic. Never again shall I enter those treacherous corners of the internet in which the Charmed fandom lives.

Detective Conan
Conversations Among Ghosts by Ysabet
Summary: NOT a ghost story, I repeat: NOT a ghost story! Detective Takagi decides to ask some *very* direct questions of Conan; secrets will be revealed, cars will break down, weirdness will prevail and people will (of course) get murdered.

Supernatural
Some Unseen Light by yellow_pomello
Summary: Future!fic; Theo's just a delinquent teen laying down new roots in Lawrence, Kansas, and he quickly finds himself in trouble with the man rumoured to be a murderer, Dean Plant. Theo spends the summer helping to fix the property he damaged and seeing a side of the man hidden from public view. Yet the more Theo learns, the less he understands about Dean, himself, and his family. And all the while teens are going missing.

^It's got Destiel in it, but no warnings needed. (Nice outsider POV and I figured out the twist but it's still a pretty good one.)

Marvel Cinematic Universe
Best Laid Plans by lulamadison
Summary: No summary. Fairly crackly prompt fill.

225 Days Under Grass by pollyrepeat
Summary: After Loki, Coulson wears his suits like armour.

Sherlock
It's Not All Fine by pennypaperbrain
Summary: This is a fill for a kinkmeme prompt: How Sherlock copes with being bipolar. Or: five times he does cope and one time he can't. The fill itself is a bit more like ‘Five times Sherlock ignores his bipolar and one time it whaps him so hard he has to take notice.’

Blue Veins by lbmisscharlie
Summary: “If a clock could count down to the moment you meet your soul mate, would you want to know?”
Everyone has a clock, either installed by futuristic machines or they're born with one.
The numbers can’t guarantee happiness, reciprocity, or even fidelity. They’re just a fact of life. In a world where everyone hides their numbers, John Watson meets a man with bare wrists.

Pedestrian by vegarin
Summary: "Either he will waver at the sight of you, or he won't. Which do you think it will be, John?" John. Moriarty. A missing scene for The Great Game.

Welcome to Night Vale
The Early Signs That Daylight's Fading by Raven
Summary: This is a story," Cecil says, "about you."

Mad Science by queerlittlething
Summary: Charlie joined Carlos' team hoping to gain some practical experience, contribute to his field, maybe get a paper published. He definitely wasn't expecting...well...Night Vale.
(A series of vignettes about everyone's favorite scientific researchers and their handsome leader.)

Taste of Home by daroos
Summary: Phil Coulson grew up in Night Vale. Somehow SHIELD is both more terrifying and easier to survive than his childhood home.

EDITED to make things clearer and also formatting. I can't spell either, it turns out.
