In case anyone feels like discussing the film properly somewhere. I've got my own opinions on it, but I'm too tired to type them up properly ATM other than the scenery being amazing *_*

really liked it for the most part. The only real issue I had with the movie (which isn't really any fault of its own, given the nature of the movie) was that I had no clue on when exactly it was gonna end. Was still fun the whole way through, but I found myself oftentimes thinking "I have no clue how many hours are left of this movie" :x

Haha, I felt the same way.  I was cool with it, but by the end my bladder was starting to get a bit agitated.

I thought it was great, I've only seen it in 2D. Misty moutains was amazing!
I'll read the book when all the films are over, which means I'll have to wait 3 years, but it's fine ^^

I agree, they should nto be allowed to use that many shots of waterfalls in a 3-hour movie

Otherwise, I thought it was utterly gorgeous. The 3D was tastefully used, and the expansions they made in relation to the book I fully approve of. To whit:

I like Azog still being alive. I like the idea of him and Thorin coming to a climactic battle, after all the buildup of Azog being a sworn enemy of the line of Durin. In the book, his son turns up randomly to Diabolus Ex Machina a climactic battle out of nowhere, which I think also could have worked in the movie if they'd had the son hunting Thorin and Co instead of Azog. Either way, it's a random backstory point made into a good subplot.

I like the fact that we're getting to see some of Radagast and the Necromancer, because it looks like we'll actually get to see Gandalf's reputedly awesome battle with the Necromancer. In the book, Gandalf buggers off and then reappears at the most plot-appropriate time (which, admittedly, is his entire reason for being) and there's never any explanation of what went on in the battle other than that Gandalf won.

Also, I'm hoping that Bard actually appears more than five seconds before he needs to fire that arrow. Seriously, that weirded me out that in the book he appeared out of literally NOWHERE to be majorly plot-relevant. Tolkein, you create amazing world but you rely WAY too much on stuff randomly popping out of nowhere.

And then they counter that with soda to wet your whistle!

well yeah, but that's why you gotta be smart about it. The science of eating salty snacks to retain water, but only drink enough to get your mouth un-salty and not completely offset it.

Or you could just hold it.  Just saying~

you could, but better to minimize how much you gotta hold it than be thinking "gottagogottagogottagogottago" the whole movie imo

Or better yet, don't buy super-expensive drinks and snacks from the theater in the first place.

Two other parts.  It's a trilogy.

To be honest, while I like the book well enough, I dislike its heavy reliance on Deus Ex Machina (frequently, but not limited to, Gandalf Ex Machina). Far too frequently, important characters and plot points come out of literally nowhere (Bard springs to mind), disrupt the flow of the story with a couple of paragraphs about where they came from and why they're important, and then get on with it. I understand that rescuing everybody's asses when JRRT gets them into too deep a pit to dig themselves out of is Gandalf's entire reason for being, and he's awesome in it, but it's used way too often elsewhere.

Also, I am amused by how quickly this thread turned to toilet talk.

I'd rather Gandalf be a Deus Ex Machina than powerless.  I mean, seriously.  He didn't do shit in LotR except blind some orcs at Helmsdeep and act as a walking encyclopedia.
