The way the poll is worded, I can't vote for either.  I'm not pro-divorce, since I think it should be the last option taken, esp. when there are kids involved.  Actually, I can't see anyone saying "Yay, Divorce!!"  At the same time, I'm not anti-divorce, because I think there are certainly situations where it's the right thing to do (e.g. abusive relationships).  I personally see divorce as an unfortunate necessity in society.

In Mexico City, they're considering an interesting concept of trial marriages.  Basically, two people can enter a trial marriage, and after two years they can either make the marriage permanent or part ways with no strings attached.  I kind of like the idea, but at the same time I can definitely see some potential problems with it.

This is something people say about the phrase "pro abortion" as well and I don't really see the connection. Just because you are "pro" something doesn't mean you think everyone should go and do it, it just means that you think everyone should have the option to if they really want to.

I am "pro" many things, few of them which I would actually take part in.

@ nom:
The problem is, even if the parents agree to keep the children out of it etc., the problem is that opinions change.
In fact, my parents did divorce, and they did agree to leave us out of it, which worked well for a few years - until money became an issue. Once they were facing each other in court, we were also drawn into that whole issue, and all previous agreements were discarded.
Basically, such agreements are great and all, but rarely work - in the end, the fight will happen on the childrens' back. Which is why I believe it is necessary to avoid a divorce as long as possible if there are children around.
After all, it was the parents' choice to marry and the parents' choice to have children, the children couldn't do anything about it, so it should be the parents, not the children, who have to bear the consequences of their actions.

Akonyl wrote:Also, to Callid: I'm a bit confused by your notion that they should cope with emotional issues for the kids, but that it's fine if they divorce due to medical reasons. I would think that emotional differences which can often lead to fighting etc would be more of a reason to divorce as it can lead to a kid growing up in an unhealthy environment than anything medical.

Oops, I should have been more clear :P
With "medically notable", I meant if the consequences of them staying together would be medically notable (psychologically or physically), i.e. if things are really serious.
If  ;), :D, ;D, ::), :P, :-X, :o or >:D are attached, that paragraph may not be 100% serious. Seriously.

@Callid: Even if I understand your point of view I can not say I agree. As I doubt parents staying together for the sake of the kids will create a good environment for the children, pretty much what Sonoci said.

I see marriage from another perspective. For me, is a legal contract; so a divorce is the end of that contract.
As long as the people who decide to get married and divorced as many times they want, don't harm someone else (for example, a kid), I don't think I should care or decide what other people should do with their lives.
As some of you said, it doesn't mean that a divorce leads to unhappy kids, or that a couple should stay together for the sake of them. A divorced couple can raise kids as good/bad as a married one.
Also, I think that the debate around this isn't referring to marriages/divorces, but to couples that stick together or break up. You can still love someone and don't be married, and viceversa.

PS: I hope my English is good enough to show my piont of view.

I have no problems with it :P
My parents would probably have killed each other if they had continued to be married :-X
And just like many other say: marriages that lasts for a few days or only for a few months are completely unnecessary :|

^ Agreed. "For the sake of the children" is a horribly fallacious reason to stay in an unhappy marriage, because as Sonoci pointed out, kids can tell when their parents are unhappy. Staying with someone that you're unhappy with will only make both of you feel worse and lead to ever more bad blood and more fighting, which no kid ever wants to see their parents doing. The kids would be much happier seeing both parents in happy relationships than unhappy together.

I can only add one thing to this:

I really wish my parents had gotten a divorce. Both of them were unhappy with their situation, but I guess they stayed together because of us kids. (Actually, I guess they married because of me.)
And, well, waking up in the middle of the night because your parents start to argue again and frequently getting all the leftover anger thrown at you - NOT. FUNNY. Seriously. Would have preferred any consequence of being-child-of-a-single-parent over that.

My parents have always been together and are happy with it, which I'm immensely glad of :) My aunt has been divorced, which was better all around for the family because he was kind of a douche and her current husband is amazing and has been a great dad to my cousins. They still like their dad and visit him sometimes, but both of them are glad that their parents didn't stay together because they think that they would have ended up hating both of them.

It's good to see that at least people here agree with the fact that everybody should reflect and think carefully about their responsibilities before getting married. I sometimes happened to argue with people who just don’t care about it and think everybody can just follow their basic instincts and have no problem with getting married and then divorced 100 times, every time the passion of love is fading without thinking about morality or children.
In my opinion, divorce can be necessary sometimes, but the very fact that there are so many situations in which divorce is preferable over staying together shows how rotten our society is.
