Jd- wrote:Europe is already not safe from blanket bans. What GEMA has done with YouTube videos in Germany is its own crime, but it has gone on for years and they can't seem to be stopped. GEMA is able to "legally" block any music-based video on YouTube that's put up by any record label, even if they do not have any presence whatsoever in Germany. GEMA should not have the right to block videos uploaded by music labels that they do not even represent. If SOPA or PIPA were to pass and media companies lobbied other governments around the world (which they absolutely would), there would be an undeniable domino effect. Pretending that the EU is somehow immune isn't inclusive of reality--the way several European countries are already punishing "pirates" is indication enough (France's three-strike policy is about as wrong as anyone could ask for, not to mention the enormous sums of money that others, including the U.K., are sinking into anti-piracy) that they are well in the pockets of the media conglomerates already. They will always feel justified in doing so, too, because the idea of "piracy" as it stands in legal terms is something that warrants legislation. The problem is they can't figure out how to do it yet, and in the meantime, we're all going to suffer for it.
Not quite right, GEMA doesn't block the videos; YouTube does so, at GEMA's request, and it does so based on very old law, not due to any recent developments concerning copyrights ::)
But yeah, I get what you mean :P
That's why I'm voting for the Pirates XD
Actually, that might be a really interesting development, as the Pirates got 10% in the recent Berlin state elections (which means they now have two people in the federal legislative body representing the states), and they get similar results (~7%, but the Berlin surveys heavily underestimated them, so the value may be higher) in federal surveys. On the other hand, the party usually associated with civil rights, the FDP, has dropped to 2% (from 15% in the last election!), and has gotten so bad an image it seems unlikely they'll recover - basically, they are seen as a party representing only the interests of the big companies. Considering that The Left (~15%) and the Greens (~20%) also oppose legislations like SOPA (the Greens actually participated in the blackout!), it seems unlikely SOPA-like laws could be passed in Germany, especially after the next election (which will almost certainly spell the end for the current government). Funnily, the entirety of German politics now depends on the SPD, the Social Democrats, who have, by now, slid in the center of the political spectrum. Basically, if they choose to work together with any of the left parties, all is well. If they, however, enter a coalition with the CDU, things won't look so good (though any law like SOPA will still get dragged before the Constitutional Court, which will likely decide against it).
If  ;), :D, ;D, ::), :P, :-X, :o or >:D are attached, that paragraph may not be 100% serious. Seriously.

It was exactly right as I said it, to those that speak English on a regular basis. We all know how it works--we've all seen the copyright notices before. We don't need anyone to point out that GEMA, or the RIAA, or Universal aren't literally blocking the videos themselves and somehow circumventing YouTube itself. We all know YouTube do it at their behest. No clarification is needed.

Well, I'm like really angry at my government right now. Just sayin'.

^ To do that after yesterday is just... wow. Pisses me off.
What's funny, though, is how Anonymous hacked into all those websites and took them down. :-X Dunno why they would do the White House's page, though. I mean, the Obama Administration is against both acts if I remember correctly...

I assume Anonymous did it because they could. They are, after all, all trolls looking for acceptable targets to troll :P

They still have my respect for turning up at the Pension Protests in Edinburgh.

it's more accurate to say they could have less fun internet things to do and they don't want less fun internet things to do

Such as?
Either they're morons or they think this is actually important. You decide which. :p
My NaNo 2014 project is a crossover fanfic with Persona 4 and Detective Conan! This year I'm sending the detective from Persona 4 to find out what happened to Shinichi.

To that specific group. I'm talking about everyone. There are tons of other things they can be taking care of but they're wasting their time on the INTERNET. XD
