It's simply that it's a long runner, and Conan and InuYasha have made me jaded towards long runners. The only long runner that I feel never loses it is Pokemon Adventures, but that's because it switches region, Pokemon and protagonists every arc.

Why Gosho uses childhood pairings so much, that is

Hopeful Kirite:

Gosho might be trying to explore the concept of "forever".  Things that stay the same no matter how much time has passed.  The BO wants to find a drug that will let them live (stay the same) forever.  While childhood friends never let go of their friend, even if the reason is fleeting, and even it means they have to wait 10 years, 30 years, or 700+ chapters.  I guess what they have is "love" unaffected by the passing of time.  Forever and ever.  As Shinichi put it "I'll come back to you even if I die". 

One of the moments that I find interesting is when Ran wondered if Shinichi will move on, and Conan replied that Shinichi-niichan will be the same as he always was. 

Realistic Kirite:

GOSHO BE TROLLIN.  I'll laugh so hard if the BO boss' reason for everything is because of a childhood friend HURRRR.
