There are lots of them.

Usually, the hero knew a girl back from his older school (either kindergarden or middle school or it was a neighboring kid) and then she had to move away or he had to move away. Then one returns and they meet again etc.

Maybe it is... but in real life, this is almost its polar opposite. For many people, once you graduate, it's common to sever ties with your friends. Sometimes, it's even considered 'rude' to 'relive' the friendship experienced back in high school.

Off the top of my head, the only other "childhood friend" marriage I can think of is (FMA spoilers):

Spoiler:
Winry Rockbell x Edward Elric

Al x Mei arguably counts, though they met as early teens/slight preteens (WTF is Mei's actual age? I think she looks a little older in the manga than the anime too.)

That's one, maybe two. DC has a dozen.

I no longer hang out with anyone I hung out with in primary school. I DO hang out with a couple of guys that were in my class at primary school, but I didn't become friends with them until the end of high school. I hang out with some people I hung out with at high school now I'm at Uni, but I've drifted apart from a lot of people. My parents are both only still friends with people that they met in college. It seems like a rare thing to make friends with someone in early childhood and remain friends your entire lives.

DBZ had a childhood pairing.

If there's any indication that DC is nothing but a dream, its that case.

Never seen DBZ.

Also, clearly, DC is a recurring dream. The same thing, over and over, with slight variations XP

Detective Conan is in an endless recursion of time.

And Haibara looks somehow bored.

wait, I just realized season 2 was dubbed. Someone put Endless Eight dialogue over a generic Conan case! It'll be hilarious.

mangaluva wrote:And he doesn't realize how inherently creepy it is. I had a whole (mildly drunken) discussion about this with two guy friends of mine whom I've known since primary one. We all feel like it's creepy. When I tried to think of myself ever dating either of them, it didn't work. I love them to bits, I've known them fifteen years, but it would be like dating my little brother. Weird, creepy, no.

I guess for some people it might work (mainly, I suspect, only children >_>) but it seems like in Gosho's universe, nobody marries anybody that they met before they were twenty. (Other manga are guilty of this too, but generally not to the point of almost every minor character having a childhood love interest. I'm waiting for Yumi's gradeschool crush to appear on the scene.)

yeah having a relationship with someone you grew up with can be weird, but in none of Gosho's cases did the childhood couples grow up together (that I can recall), they met as children, went their own ways and then met again through the wonders of plot, which is entirely different. Aka the Westermarck Effect.

and I don't know what you mean by "in Gosho's universe nobody marries anyone they met before they were twenty", because I would think in his childhood-love-centric plots it'd be exactly the opposite.

Well, that's "confession of a crush" vs "proposal". Which was utterly adorkable XDXD

@Ako: ShinichixRan, KaitoxAoko, HeijixKazuha and ErixKogoro all grew up together. Also, apologies, it was kind of a brainfart, I meant "after they were twenty" XP

oh wow, my mind was just locking on to the new ones like shiratori/kobayashi and chiba/naeko, I completely glossed over the main cast  :V :-X

in that case, yeah that's true, although aside from flashbacks (which are obviously centered on their relationships) iunno if we know how close they actually were to determine if it's creepy or not. But it's certainly possible, I'd just completely forgotten about them xd

and I figured it was a brain fart, just making sure. :P

Eri and Kogoro though? I don't remember them as kids ever being mentioned, though they might have been in like high school or something.

Don't forget Agasa/DesignerLadyWhoseNameIForget!

I swear we saw a flashback to them in grade school at one point? My memory is hazy, but I have a clear mental image of Child!Eri fighting with Child!Kogoro. Maybe it was middle school, I don't know... Eri does explicitly warn Ran against dating childhood friends, though.
