I'm unsure if it was dyed on the slide itself or if it was added after the photographs are taken, but either way I'm fairly positive they were colorless/monochrome beforehand (like most things viewed in microscopes)

Nah, That's what happens when you look at crystals through crossed polarizers. I did some protein crystallography back in the day and the crystals always looked the best desktop background ever. Hell, even the failed clouds of crap looked like desktop backgrounds. I wish I took more pictures.
