I pretty much write whatever I'm actually thinking :/ ...Of course, how are any of you to know this is what I'm actually thinking? :D

It's like a paradox or something.

Most of the time, my posts show what I'm thinking/feeling pretty accurately. Sometimes not because if I'm really angry over something a lot of times I'll tone it down in my posts (though not all the time :-X), and there are obviously times where I'll post :'( and not really be crying, but that's usually if I think :( won't work as well to convey my feelings.

And I'm sure I look like a complete dork in front of my computer screen cause I'm making all kinda of crazy facial expressions, but hey, at least I'm having fun or whatever. :P

I'm honest and while I don't look like an emoticon, sometimes I really do laugh when I type in that laughing emoticon or I type HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

The length is quite accurate, I suppose.  :P

I generally use them to converse a certain emotion (and for this, I always use them accurately (except when I'm being ironic, but not all are eligible for that (see my signature!), and I always try to make it completely clear I'm being ironic)), but my facial expression is, of course, no always the same :P

NOTE:
Below, all smilies that'd normally accompany the comments and explanations are omitted in order to avoid confusion.

:)
"Heart-warmed" smiley.
This is one I use very seldom, and probably is the one with the most positive meaning of all.

;)
Joking / Friendly advice / You'll manage / etc.
This is actually pretty close to how I use real-life winking, except when accompanying an advice, in which case it means "This is an advice, but only an advice".

:D
General happiness.
Whenever I'm happy about something. Has about the same meaning as "Yay!".

;D
Nearly anything
This smile can mean nearly anything and pretty much combines the properties of  ;), :P, >:D and ::). Due to this being way to confusing, I tend to use it only if for combinations of smilies, i.e. if I can use no other smiley. Nonetheless, this is the one to be misunderstood most easily. Note that all of its meanings contain at least the message of :P. Also note that it does NOT have the properties of either :) or :D (!).

>:(
Angry.
Pretty much self-explanatory. It is also reserved for quite a notable amount of anger; if I'm simply annoyed, it'll never be used. If several are right after each other, I'm really, really angry.

:(
Feeling sorry / Feeling sad or depressed
I use this to either convey I'm feeling sorry for someone (most likely in the Bad Stories thread) or when I'm very sad or depressed myself. This is probably the most negative smiley of all, even more than :'(

:o
Great surprise
Pretty much self-explanatory. Note that, unless it is used ironically (which it is quite often), it expresses really great surprise.

8-)
-
A smiley I use extremely seldom, basically only after a sincere compliment. It's meaning is a somewhat ironic "Yes, that's how great I am.", or in order to downplay instances of me complimenting myself.

???
Confusion.
Self-explanatory. Not used for minor confusions.

::)
You know / Irony / Stand-in for :P
My second-most frequent smiley. It's most frequent use in order to left obvious things or conclusions unsaid and either up to interpretation or for the reader to complete himself; this use is often accompanied with a "...". This use could be called the "You know what I mean or am talking about, complete this sentence yourself"-use. It may also be used in order to express irony, especially if it's obvious. In some cases, it also serves as a stand-in for :P, especially if there would be many :Ps in a paragraph.

:P
Do not take this too serious or personally
My most frequent smiley by far. It's normal use is to emulate a non-serious, ironic or joking tone. The reason for its frequent use is to make sure any occasion of me not speaking in a serious tone is marked as such, i.e. to create a contrast to my serious tone (see below). If it can be substituted with another smiley, it nearly always is. To the reader, it is meant to convey that the comment it is attached to should not be taken to heart, and is meant to be understood as a light-hearted comment.

:-[
Embarrassment / I'm sorry
This smiley serves exactly the two purposes above, most often not just one, but both. I use it in order to convey I understand I made some kind of mistake or blunder, and that I am sorry for it.

:-X
I don't dare to say more
This smiley has two meanings. Either, similarly to the first meaning of ::), it is meant as a "complete this yourself"-smiley, but in a content where the unsaid is not (necessarily) obvious, but instead should not be said for another reason (hurtful, inappropriate, unsuited to minors...). If used this way, it also means I am distancing myself from what I'm writing or implying.

:-\
I doubt it / Undecided
I normally use this one in order to express my doubt about whatever it accompanies. Sometimes, I also employ it to make clear I'm undecided about something, or that I want to distance myself a bit from what I'm saying.

:-*
Kiss
This one is pretty clear, and reserved exclusively for nom. On very rare occasions, I may also use it as a "Thank you!".

:'(
Crying
This one does mean crying, but usually it isn't meant completely seriously, which is why it isn't as serious as :(. If it is indeed used seriously, it's generally an escalation of :(, in which case it is likely in proximity to a :(.

:|
Squick
Anything giving some kind of "squick" impression.

>:D
I'm being evil
Always used in a ironic-lampshading way of me being mean. Whatever it accompanies should be treated as if there was a :P as well.

^^
Joy / Friendly smile
This one is closely related to ;) and :D, and is usually used as a toned-down version of one of them.

XD
Another rather frequent one, this one combines the properties of :P and ^^.

[no smiley]
Serious
If there are no smilies around it means I'm speaking in my serious tone. If this is the case, I'm completely serious with everything I say and not joking. No smilies at all in a long post = deadly serious. It should be noted that if the only use of smilies is in brackets, then only the brackets are not-serious, the rest of the text may still be completely serious (I'm trying to avoid this, though).

If  ;), :D, ;D, ::), :P, :-X, :o or >:D are attached, that paragraph may not be 100% serious. Seriously.

That was long, and fun reading!
So no ' :P, :D, :o, etc.' dead serious? DEAD SERIOUS? I mean... seriously? :o

Well, me, too. If I don't put such emos that means I am not in the mood or... angry. Or... can be... I am just lazy! :D

:-[ :-*

I think most of my smiley usage is pretty clear. Though I can't recall using them when I am really serious about something. But that doesn't mean that all my posts without them are deadly serious. Some posts doesn't need them and often I am too lazy.

^This would be the  most accurate one for me (including the pervert things :P). IRL I keep things to myself because people don't care about me or it would be troublesome if I said them... also for more reasons.
