I remember there was this one episode in the anime where Ran, pardon my language, dressed really sluttily.  It was within the first 100 episodes...I can't really remember, but it had to do with apartment rooms, and I believe the culprit was some famous actor?

Dunno, something that was on my mind when I read this thread.  And yeah, that keyhole + the destiny opening is really unnecessary.

I notice in episode 103, Rachel appears in a short, open little number, as if trying to get someone's attention, which she doesn't. The next episode, she's in a drab blue dress. Poor girl. So confused. Or is that Gosho?

Yep, episodes 102-103. The case with the actor from the samourai movies who owns 500 apartements.

Uh... I meant it more like, fanservice will never advance the plot of a story (if plot =/ fanservice from the beginning).
And it's what the name suggests. A little service for the fans :p

The openings and endings don't really bother me, her swimsuit at the start and that keyhole.  Mostly the swimsuit, because it's against her character.  If she dressed like that more often, then it wouldn't irritate me quite as much, but it pulls me out of the story when it's purely fanservice.  (And out of character fanservice at that.  I mean, have the suspects dress like that, not the Ran that blushes all the time!)
102-103 doesn't really bother me, mostly because I'm pretty sure that was the style when it was drawn.  It was a bare midriff, but it wasn't super revealing.

However Ran is actually portrayed in the manga is her "character," not what you think she is like.

I'll agree that her outfit was proper for the time, and give Gosho credit for coming up with a different outfit for Ran, it just didn't seem like the kind she would normally wear.

True.  I just mean that the way she dresses later fits the way she talks and acts better than at the beginning.  Which really is to be expected.
