I don't see much incriminating. I could be in denial...if I was actually serious enough about this theory.sonoci wrote:All we've had for Shinichi is little girls (going after Conan, no less) and a fake girlfriend that didn't even actually want to contact him for lovey purposes.

KnightusMaximus wrote:I would say that Ran though has had a major love rival in Haibara. With the exception of Shiratori, I don't think there actually was a more serious rival in this series. It was just a very subtle competition for affection/attention by comparison to what we expect in a love triangle. Haibara was borderline flirty with Conan in some early parts of the series ("I'm really 18, just perfect for you"). Their close relationship caused Ayumi to confront Ai directly about whether she's in love with him, which Ai denied but not before rhetorically asking her "what if I am?". Ran first heard of Ai during the Shinichi flashback case in volume 21, and by then had already begun to suspect Conan is Shinichi. When she found out Haibara was a "cute new girl" hanging around the Detective Boys, she chastised Conan for "never telling me anything about school". Then later Haibara, after denying that any of the data to cure Shinichi's condition was recovered in V24, refused to talk to or acknowledge Ran in the beginning of the Revival arc (while typing next to a burnt-up floppy disc, lamenting that she isn't confronting this). After the Desperate Revival arc, Haibara was visibly happy that Shinichi was unable to confess his feelings to Ran, causing the Detective Boys to ask if "something good happened to her" (Shinichi, by contrast, was clearly depressed).
Needless to say, Haibara eventually warmed up to Ran during the Vermouth arc to the point where she began to see her as her big sister. But until then, I think she was definitely a rival.
Does Ran really have her happiness available right there, though? I'm still a bit concerned about the foreshadowing intended by the line, "[If I confess,] she would want to see me. If I said how I feel about her, she would miss me even more... all this time, I've been breaking her heart by keeping her waiting, yet I still can't appear before her eyes. I never want to see her cry anymore, even if it means I no longer exist in her heart." It seems like this particular issue hasn't in any way been resolved since V33. The conclusion Conan himself reached was that a confession of feelings will only lead to further unhappiness for Ran as she would desire to see him more. Conan/Shinichi, unlike Ran, has the peace of mind of knowing that he is around the woman he loves 24/7. Ran just doesn't. Sera could potentially be a comforting presence in her life.
Thanks for the kind words and good point! I think Conan's prediction was a bit more long-term than we've seen so far. Ran's reaction has surprised a lot of people... but I think it's just early butterflies from realizing their relationship is more serious than she thought it was, nervousness about what it all means, and maybe just being unaccustomed to saying "lovey" things to her longtime friend. When those butterflies are gone, if/when they transition from a friendship to a relationship, I believe that's when it would lead to more hardship for Ran... at least according to the quote. That's without putting any rival in the picture, since lord knows how he/she fits in here. ^^sonoci wrote:Essentially he's saying that if he confesses (which he did) she'll be even more heartbroken, but he didn't really get the choice in London with everything that went on (quote Sonoko: Seems like you forced it) Now that it's been said, she'll 'worry more', right? So far it doesn't seem like that's happened...if anything it almost seems like Ran is glad Shinichi isn't around as it'd be awkward. If that's really foreshadowing, maybe it happens because Ran meets a potential straightforward rival for Shinichi, thus thinking about him?

whoa, both sonoci and knightusmaximus have very interesting and logical deductions....!! both mekes sense....a lot ^^
that got me confused, at first i believed he, as in sera is a guy no doubt, but then, reading sonoci's deduction got my mind twisted...LOL...
i think i'll just look who presents more evidence between the wo of you...^^

He didn't appear between volumes 26 and 62, and then he appeared 8 volumes later which I think was too soon. I hope Gosho waits at least 20 volumes to make him appear again, no matter how much the fans like the character.
