Pretty sure the Sharon/Charon thing is incidental. The Japanese don't tend to have much understanding of Western Mythology (thus the necessity in movie 6 of explaining Noah's Ark).
"Sharon" was actually a reasonably popular American name in the generation that's now in their 40s and 50s (the age Sharon Vinyard ought to be). By the same token "Chris" (often short for "Christina" or similar) is a somewhat popular/common American name in the following generation (now in their 20s and 30s).
I believe the 'name meaning' for Sharon is "plain" (as in a place of flat land), though my mother keeps insisting that Sharon is a variant of Sarah and means 'princess'. I've still never liked my name, which is a big part of why I don't use it anymore unless I have to.

How do I know about the popularity in generations difference in the names Sharon and Chris? People keep getting me and my mother (who spells her name a little differently) mixed up, because each of us has the name more popular in the other generation.

Sharon was named after Sharon Stone. So the connection with Charon and Sherry are probably just happy accidents.

But my name isn't any of the variants, it's "Sharon".
Not that I use it anymore if I can help it. Probably the only reason I haven't gone and gotten my name changed is that I'm lazy---my passport even still has my maiden name because I haven't had it fixed yet. The only reason my driver's license isn't the same way is that I don't have one. :p

Some knowledge, yes, as evidenced even longer ago by the NYC case and the "Golden Apple" play, but apparently not all that clear an understanding because that play just did some REALLY weird things....even setting aside the murder part.
