What Decade/Year is DC set in?

Postby Vicky » February 1st, 2011, 6:27 pm

So I’m curious on this, and primarily because I’ve been asked this a lot by friends of mine. xD. Does Detective Conan have a set decade that it takes place in? I’m pretty sure it takes place somewhere around the 1990s because of dial-up being used (episode 130, Haibara’s first appearance), but I can’t be 100% sure if it’s true or not. >.>

Likewise, we’ve seen evidence that the years seem to skip around. Like in one episode it could be winter, and the next it could be Valentine’s Day or summer. Even if there’s no set date, would it be easy to say that it’s set somewhere around the 1990s? Thoughts?

....And if this topics already been posted before, my apologies. XD.

It has a sliding continuity, since cases use technology available at time of writing.  Recent episodes have technology available today, therefore it couldn't all take place in the 90s.

floating timeline. detective conan is set in "the present"; the old technologies depicted were not always old when the episodes were released after all.

And that’s what happens when I don’t pay attention to tiny details like newer technology being introduced in the series. XD.

I could definitely see it having a liquid time set, so that’d definitely answer my question. Thanks!

At first, Shinichi was the Sherlock Holmes of the 90s, but that was when nobody expected the manga/anime to go on this long.

I just checked, it's "Heisei Holmes" in the manga, and the "Sherlock Holmes of the 90s" in the anime (or so the translation goes). I guess we'll stick to the manga anyway, so you're correct.

i think the anime translation just turns heisei into "the present" because it assumes that most people waching don't have that level of familiarity with japanese culture.

Yeah, I’m primarily following a mixture of the anime and manga, but primarily the manga for tiny details like such. If that makes sense. XD.

Cell phones were around in the 90s, actually. ;D Just not that common.

This proves another point. If the characters don’t age unless Gosho mentions it, how could we be certain of the decade? If it’s set in the 90s, 2000s, etc. with the advancement in technology? XD. Granted, it’s a sliding continuity, but that sort of throws things off course. xD.

Well it certainly isn't the 22nd Century. Otherwise Conan would have met Sherlock Holmes and Robot Watson.
