The Great DCTP Lottery has come to an end!
This lottery was, at its core, not just a forum-centric game of interactive suspense, but was a means of proving something beyond anyone's doubt.
The day the game began, I was already certain how it would turn out. Yes, it would be controversial here and there and that's understandable. Some expressed concern that the lottery would amount to nothing but users turning on one another at every turn. I knew better than that--I have spent an inordinate amount of time around a fair share of the users in this community and have only ever come to one conclusion: I consider myself fortunate to have met so many of you.
As I said in the message to those that participated in the Final Proposition: The lottery originally came to be because I insisted this community would stick together no matter what happened. Some people over the years have been cynical that this community is really a community that's any better than all the others out there. I've always disagreed and still do. Conan may be what has brought a great many people here, but, for most, it isn't the reason they come back day after day after day. The relationships and friends they have made along the way is what has made them from a community into a family (a rather dysfunctional family, but a family nonetheless).
People from all over the world are really the ones that make up what this forum represents. They now converse at enormous lengths not just about Conan, but about literally everything else imaginable (even killing each other!... in Mafia, and maybe otherwise in Parkur's case). To me, it's always been the one definitive example of a friendly and welcoming community to anyone and everyone that was willing to give it a chance.
This game, as hopefully can be seen now, was never meant to tear everyone apart but instead to bring them together. I do hope it was genuinely intriguing on some level and served as a suspenseful distraction for anyone that followed it over the past few weeks, and am also hopeful that the message delivered in the end not by just me, but by everyone else here, came through clearly. This community is something more than just a forum dedicated to Detective Conan, and if anyone ever doubted it, this is the evidence. While you many of us knew that this community would never turn its back on its fellow members, now... we have proof.
The support for one another demonstrated not just in the Final Proposition but throughout the game is the best gift I could think to arrange for everyone. Even if you feel like there's something you can't overcome in your daily lives, I am hopeful this lottery has convinced you that there will always be a place for you here.
All that's left to mention is that I have been asked a few times over the past few weeks whether there would be another lottery. My only reply is that I see no reason why there would need to be.
With this community, the result will always be the same.
Merry Christmas, everyone!
(The original post, for archiving purposes)
Inspired by the famous short story of the same name... It is now time to begin the ultimate tradition!
THE RULES!
- Everyone who posts in this topic will have 3 (three) tokens with their name on each entered into the lottery.
- Everyone that doesn't post in this topic (after meeting one or more conditions listed below) will have 15 (fifteen) tokens with their name on each entered into the lottery.
- On Christmas Day, a token will be drawn and a winner will be announced.
- The winner cannot transfer entitlement of the prize to another user.
- It is not possible to withdraw from the lottery at any time after posting.
- Ownership of tokens cannot be traded or forfeited for any reason.
- All names and their respective numbers of tokens will be generated digitally and chosen at random.
Those automatically entered into the lottery with 15 tokens are those that abide to any of the following:
- Anyone with over 500 posts as of this writing and has been active in the past three months.
- Anyone who has ever participated in a Mafia game or related activity and has been active in the past three months.
- Anyone that registered after December 1st, 2008 and had over 30 posts within their first six months as a member and has been active in the past three months.
If any of these conflict with another, you are considered entered. If you do not qualify, you are not eligible for the contest nor its prize.
The Prize
Essentially, the point of the lottery is to ensure that everyone gets a fair shake--no one is exempt (including myself, GinRei, Abs., and all other staff members and moderators that qualify).
To put it concisely, here is an abridged version of the rather excellent summary from Wikipedia:
The story contrasts details of contemporary small town American life with an annual ritual known as "the lottery". In a small village of about 300 residents, the locals are in a strange and nervous mood on 27 June. Children gather up stones as the adult townsfolk assemble for their annual event, that in the local tradition has been practiced to ensure a good harvest. In the first round of the lottery, the head of each family draws a small slip of paper; Bill Hutchinson gets the one slip with a black spot, meaning that his family has been chosen. In the next round, each Hutchinson family member draws a slip, and Bill's wife Tessie—who had arrived late—gets the marked slip. In keeping with tradition, Tessie is then stoned to death by everyone present.
Yes, it's exactly what it sounds like. Equate the slips with tokens and lives with accounts. We will be simplifying the game by doing one draw, no "family" associations.
I'll make it a little more clear in case it hasn't gotten across: The winner's account is on the line. Yes. Deletion.
Decide what you want to do. As someone having already posted here, my odds of being chosen are already low, aren't they? People may say their chances of being chosen are low due to the volume of people and decide not to post anyway. You know who is really going to wish they didn't say that?
The winner.
The Adopter Rule
There is one way to reduce your chances of winning substantially. The first twenty people to post in this topic that are not me will have only 2 (two) tokens entered instead of the usual 3. One person of the twenty will be chosen to have the opportunity to see their amount of tokens reduced to 1.

Roles in the Game:
Throughout the contest, a number of players will be assigned roles. Some of these roles will intersect and conflict with others. There are two types of roles:
- Secret roles: Roles in which the public is not made aware of the role holder's identity. Partial results from their decision and the details of the job they were assigned are announced once their proposition has come to an end. The identities of those assigned secret roles are best kept confidential, as later--should they be known--they could be in danger of losing the game when their odds are magnified significantly. In short: If you are given a secret role, you should not tell anyone, no matter how trustworthy they may seem.
- Prestige roles: Roles in which the public is made aware at the onset who holds the role in question and the nature of their proposition. They are free to interact with others involved in the contest while making their decision.
PROGRESS TO DATE
Proposition #1 (December 5th-6th, 2010)
Brief: One of the twenty adopters has been randomly selected to assume the secret role of Volunteer and was given the opportunity to receive a -1 to their token total, bringing them to just 1 token in the game. This person is now the least likely to be chosen in the draw.
Proposition: The Volunteer was given the opportunity to receive a -1 to their token total, as promised in the Adopter Rule in the beginning post.
They have accepted this result and followed through with the proposition. One person of the twenty will be chosen to have the opportunity to see their amount of tokens reduced to 1.
The Volunteer Role
- 1 user with a result of -1 tokens
- 6 users with a result of +0 tokens
- 8 users with a result of +1 tokens
- 4 users with a result of +2 tokens
- 1 user with a result of +3 tokens
UPDATE as Proposition #2 gets underway:
The user that received +3 in the course of the first proposition was xpon.
Proposition #2 (December 6th-7th, 2010) — COMPLETE
Brief: One user of the general population (not an adopter) has been selected to assume the prestige role of Mayor. The role of the Mayor is a public one.
Proposition: The user assuming the Mayor role will be given the opportunity to pardon one participant from the game.
The Mayor Role
Proposition #3 (December 7th-8th, 2010) — COMPLETE
Brief: One user of the overall population (adopter or general) has been selected to assume the secret role of Trustee.
Proposition: The Trustee now has the ability to reduce one target's total tokens to 1, tying them for the least amount of tokens possessed in the game. As a result, the target's previous total tokens are to be split between two resulting targets. The resulting targets may be selected by the Trustee, or the Trustee may request they be made at random.
The Trustee Role
Proposition #4 (December 8th-10th, 2010) — COMPLETE
Brief: This proposition offers the introduction of Partner Propositions.
Proposition: Two roles were assigned in this proposition: X and Y. The X role has been responsible for choosing a list of eight targets, while Y has been responsible for choosing the nature of their prize package.
The X Role
The identity of the user receiving +60 will not be revealed at this time. Those that now have a token count of 1 are the following:
Callid — Under 5 Tokens + 1 Token
Conia — Under 5 Tokens + 1 Token
Kleene Onigiri — Under 5 Tokens + 1 Token
Kor — Under 5 Tokens + 1 Token
PhoenixTears — Under 5 Tokens + 1 Token
c-square — Over 10 Tokens + 1 Token
Parkur — Over 50 Tokens + 1 Token
The next proposition will take place beginning Saturday, December 11th.
Proposition #5 (December 11th-12th, 2010) — COMPLETE
Brief: Participant breva was the unlucky user to be randomly awarded +60 tokens from the last proposition while the other seven targets' tokens were reduced to just 1.
Proposition: Two new roles, the Warden and the Patron, form a new partnership as the result of a previous proposition.
The Warden Role
Pofa had the option of her identity and task going unrevealed while staying out of the game, having Parkur's sacrifice be breva's tokens reduced to 1 while he took on her former amount.
In the end, Pofa has accepted the proposition, saving both Parkur and breva, and returning to the game with a total of 3 tokens. Parkur and breva both have 1 token.
Proposition #6 (December 12th-13th, 2010) — COMPLETE
Brief: Another opportunity for a user to leave the game has been presented, but with the outcome affected by the follow-up proposition as well.
Proposition: The Judge can now exonerate one user from a pool of four selected by them.
The Judge Role
Proposition #7 (December 13th-14th, 2010) — COMPLETE
Brief: One participant from the four selected by the Judge has been exempt from the game.
Proposition: One further participant may now be exempt from the game, from the three remaining from Proposition #6.
The Delegate Role
Proposition #8 (December 14th-15th, 2010) — COMPLETE
Brief: A small number of users have left the game prior to this proposition.
Proposition: The Auditor role is another with multiple options.

A group of 7 randomly selected users have now received +3 tokens:
Proposition #9 (December 15th-17th, 2010) — COMPLETE
Brief: The end of The Great DCTP Lottery is in sight. But, at last, we have a proposition in which everyone can take part!
Proposition: Proposition #9 is an opportunity to see a proposition repeated from the choices in the poll above. This time, the nature of the proposition will remain the same, yet the stakes will be considerably higher.
The Community's Role
— Proposition #2: 28.6%
— Proposition #3: 16.7%
— Proposition #4: 31%
— Proposition #6-7: 23.8%
Proposition #4 will be repeated as Proposition #11, but with greater stakes.
Proposition #10 (December 17th-18th, 2010) — COMPLETE
Brief: As Proposition #4 was waiting to be repeated, Proposition #10 was carried out.
Proposition: Two users were awarded +20 tokens in Propositions #6 and #7. One can now have that amount reduced.
The Advocate Role
Proposition #11 (December 18th-19th, 2010) — COMPLETE
Brief: Proposition #9 had the Community voting on the proposition they would like to see repeated as Proposition #11. Proposition #4 was the proposition that received the most votes.
Proposition: The two users previously assigned the roles of X and Y have re-assumed those roles. The stakes this time will be greater.
The X Role
X's selections in alphabetical order:
- Huty
- Kleene Onigiri
- PhoenixTears
- Sherlock3
- Shin101
- ShiraKiryuu
- sstimson
- xpon
Y has chosen Package...
Proposition #12 (December 20th-21st, 2010) — COMPLETE
Brief: The target of a previous game has been awarded the award of Samaritan.
Proposition: One user may be forever exempt from the game, at an unknown price.
The Samaritan Role
The Samaritan role is very straightforward. Simply put: All you must do is choose one user to exempt from the game. This role was assigned to you as a result of the outcome of Proposition #1.
You, xpon, have now assumed the Samaritan role. This is a permanent role, meaning you are no longer eligible for future roles that will come up in the contest.
This is known as a prestige role. In other words, your name will be announced alongside your decision.
THE SAMARITAN'S RULES (assuming no penalties)
- You now have the opportunity to save one fellow participant from the game.
- Your decision will be tied to the decision of an opposing role to follow in Proposition #13, meaning the price remains unknown.
- If you do not wish to choose a user, you do not have to. Should you not make a decision by the deadline, no user will be exempt from the game and Proposition #13 will proceed but with fewer available options.
- Any user that has posted in the official topic is eligible to be exempt from the game.
- The user you choose to be exempt from the game will be unable to return to the game assuming the proposition passes Proposition #13. There will be no future proposition that returns them to the game if it is successful.
Results: The Samaritan has chosen to accept the proposition and has selected...
UPDATE: Conia has asked to be reinstated to the game. Xpon has granted this change and Shin101 has been exempt in his place. Conia has returned to the game with his previous token amount.
Proposition #13 (December 20th-21st, 2010) — COMPLETE
Brief: The Volunteer was the first secret role assigned, dating back to the very first proposition.
Proposition: The Volunteer has been given the opportunity to reprise their role, but under different circumstances.
The Volunteer Role
You were the first participant to take on a role in the first proposition, and will now be involved in one of the last.
You are set to reprise your role as the Volunteer. This is a permanent role, meaning you are no longer eligible for future roles that will come up in the contest.
This is still considered a secret role. Your identity will not be revealed.
THE VOLUNTEER'S RULES (assuming no penalties)
- In Proposition #12, participant xpon was chosen to assume the role of Samaritan as a result of receiving the most tokens in the first proposition from you. In that role he was able to choose one user to be exempt from the game. That user was Conia.
- You once again have the opportunity to award xpon tokens, but this time in order to buy your freedom from the game.
- Should you wish to leave the game, you may do so by rewarding xpon with +100 tokens. Should you choose to accept this proposition, you will no longer be considered a participant in the game and xpon will become the frontrunner to be drawn.
- Should you choose not to award xpon +100 tokens, no action will be taken and you will remain a participant in the game.
- If you do not make a decision by the deadline, the "inaction option" will be taken. xpon will receive no further tokens, and you will remain a participant in the game.
Results: In Proposition #1, the Volunteer allocated a pool of tokens to 19 of their fellow users. The user that received the most tokens in that proposition was xpon. xpon elected to see user Conia exempt from the game in Proposition #12.
Now, the Volunteer had the opportunity to award xpon tokens (though this time with 100 of them) in order to buy their own freedom from the game.
Participant xpon has been awarded...
Proposition #14 (December 21st-22nd, 2010) — COMPLETE
Brief: This secret role involves a reprisal but a secret one.
Proposition: As a result of a previous role, another player is now given the opportunity to leave the game.
The _______ Role
You now have the opportunity to reprise the _______ role, and again secretly but under differing terms. Your role will not be announced in the actual results to prevent others from piecing together your identity should your decision be a controversial one.
You have now re-assumed the _______ role. This is a permanent role, meaning you are no longer eligible for future roles that will come up in the contest.
This is known as a secret role. Your identity will not be revealed to the public.
THE _______'S RULES (assuming no penalties)
- As the _______, like with other roles, you had a decision to make that affected other users. Now you have the opportunity to do that again, but this time in order to allow you to exit the game.
- There are no strings attached to this proposition. All you must do to leave the game is personally choose two users to receive +100 tokens.
- You do not have to choose anyone. If you would prefer inaction, that is also an option.
- There is no penalty for not deciding by the deadline. The "inaction" option will be taken and no users will be rewarded with tokens and you will remain a user in the game.
- If you do choose two users and exempt yourself from the game, you will not be eligible for its prize or be able to return at any point.
Results: The _______ has made their decision. The users awarded tokens as a result of this this proposition are...
Proposition #15 (December 22nd-23rd, 2010) — COMPLETE
Brief: This is the last numbered proposition.
Proposition: One user can almost certainly determine the winner of the game.
The Philanthropist Role
The Philanthropist has the opportunity to grant a number of exemptions to the game at the highest cost to date.
You have now assumed the Philanthropist role. This is a permanent role, meaning you are no longer eligible for future roles that will come up in the contest.
This is known as a secret role. Your identity will remain confidential.
THE PHILANTHROPIST'S RULES (assuming no penalties)
- The following is a list of the twenty adopters that entered the game prior to the first proposition:
1. Parkur
2. pofa
3. Endless-chan
4. Akonyl
5. breva
6. Shin101
7. bluekaitou1412
8. Conia

14. TheBlind
15. xpon
16. Paix672
17. dany
18. PhoenixTears
19. sstimson
20. Shirakiryuu
- You now have the opportunity to exempt yourself and all applicable targets from the adopters pool prior to the final stages of the game.
- That is... with the exception of one user on the list.
- The one user you choose will be awarded +10,000 tokens.
- Statistically speaking, the user you choose will almost certainly be the winner of the game.
- You cannot choose a user no longer in the game as a result of previous propositions (Shin101, for example).
- Alternatively, you are not required to make a choice. If you do not make a decision by the deadline, all users on the list and yourself will continue on to see the end of the game.
Results: The Philanthropist has made their decision. The user responsible has chosen to...
The Final Proposition (December 24th, 2010) — COMPLETE
The final proposition began and ended yesterday. Its results will not be shared in full until later today (December 25th).
The Final Proposition
Today is December 24th, and if you are reading this, you are now part of the Final Proposition.
Throughout the Lottery to date and its phases, there have been many opportunities to sacrifice one user for the sake of the group. Likewise, there have been times where being overtly selfish would have benefited the user in a given role should they be considering only their own future. When it came down to it, even one of a pair of users that's known for having heated disagreements here and there was unable to act solely in their own interest--even if it meant sending their occasional rival to the head of the draw. This came up time and time again and yet, no one ever seized the opportunity to fully do away with a single user.
The Lottery originally came to be because I insisted the above would be the case no matter what happened.
If you disagree, you now have the chance to prove me wrong.
Tomorrow, a token will be drawn. That user will be up for deletion.
The original story, as many have observed and written about over the years, parallels a parable from eons ago. This facet is rarely taken into consideration by the casual reader. A tradition is only a tradition so long as it's followed. There are many reasons that a practice becomes repeated as a tradition, yet in the case of the Lottery, there was a very clear means of ending the tradition. Not everyone had to take to the pile of stones to cast off a member of their community. It would have taken a little courage and trust in their fellow community members, but if they trusted that they were not the only one that would stand up against it, it could have been ended right then and there.
Now, you have that chance as well.
There is a means of changing the fate of the name drawn.
To stop the Lottery, you need numbers. One person is not going to be enough. As such, it will be put to a vote. There are only two answers you may give:
Yes, I would like to intervene.
No, I will not intervene.
YOUR VOTE WILL BE REVEALED PUBLICLY ALONGSIDE YOUR NAME. In the original story, there was no secret as to who participated in the stoning. The same goes for here.
It seems simple, yes? Just a choice of "yes" and "no"...
There is something I have not told you yet:
For the Lottery to be stopped, the vote must be unanimous.
If it is not, the lottery will continue as planned, with one more addition:
If the vote is not unanimous (in other words, if even one user votes NO), the users that have voted YES will be entered into a separate draw to determine their fate.
THE FINAL PROPOSITION'S RULES
- Your vote will be revealed alongside your name tomorrow. Every voter and their exact vote will be revealed publicly.
- A user's name will still be drawn tomorrow. Whether they are saved or not will depend on the results of this Final Proposition, to be announced afterward.
- As mentioned above, the vote must be unanimous. The amount of users involved in the voting will not be revealed until the results are given.
- By voting YES, you are trusting your fellow community members to save everyone involved.
- If you vote NO, you will not be subjected to the second draw (but will instead be enabling it).
- You are not permitted to disclose the terms of the Final Proposition OR YOUR VOTE ahead of the eventual reveal to anyone other than myself.
- To vote, reply to this message with your exact vote.
- A vote is required before the deadline or one will be decided for you.
The Final Proposition is now underway.
This forum community is the closest and most loyal that I have ever been a part of. I have always believed that when it really came down to it, everyone that is an active, dedicated member here would stick their neck out for the sake of the everyone else--even someone they didn't know.
To me, this community is the perfect example of what all should be. For many, including myself, this place has become a second home to fall back on even during particularly trying days. That's why I am confident that the passion I have for this community and all of its members is not exclusive to me--I honestly believe it means as much to me as it does all of the people that keep coming back to it, and that includes you.
The person drawn may not even be someone you know very well. All the same, it could be the person you like most. Will you stick your neck out for someone that you possibly don't even know? Does the community mean enough to you for you to stand up for it? Are you willing to save the person drawn tomorrow while also trusting in your fellow voters to also vote YES?
I am.
Hopefully after seeing the goodwill your fellow users have expressed throughout the game, you are too.
Users that have voted Yes, I would like to intervene:

The results of the Final Proposition have gone unannounced... until now.
