Related to this topic, the legendary birds are a good case for why it's good to change some Pokemon names from the Japanese originals. Fire, Thunder and Freezer might work for Japan, but not so much in the west.

Vaporeon is Showers, Jolteon is Thunders, and Umbreon is Blacky.

So if they kept the Japanese names and just directly translated it, we'd have Thunder and Thunders both. And they're in the first 150. :V

So name changes are definitely a good thing. XD
