Patients is a perfectly regular plural noun, formed by adding -s to the singular form patient. It means “people who are receiving or waiting to receive medical care or treatment.â€

@sstimson: ...? Um. I'm not sure I get it. Yes 'patient' can refer to someone in a hospital, but it's also a form of 'patience'. The sentence 'You should be patience' would be incorrect. To 'be patient' is to have the attribute of patience: in other words, 'to be waiting without complaint'.

It's kind of weird, I know, since you can have patience too, but 'being patient' is far from incorrect  I think you were thinking of the mistake 'We should have patients' in which case 'patients' sounds like 'patience' so people spell it that way. Related, if you're in a hospital it'd be incorrect to say 'I'm patient'. The correct way would be 'I'm a patient'
