while chess is a competitive activity I usually think of a sport has to involve either athleticism or hand-eye coordination. has to have some physical exertion.

I love chess btw :)

Volleyball.
It's fun IMO.

Not knowing the proper way to play it sucks though.

Actually:
"Chess is a recognized sport of the International Olympic Committee, and is led by the FIDE. "
so in this case, xpon was right

I played in 6th grade and it was fun. I played again last year, in gym.
I wasn't that bad. ::)

I did hit the ball pretty often close to my wrist. Which was extremely painful.

just giving my own thoughts on what makes a sport a sport. not here to argue the craziness that is the IOC (sooooo much propaganda in there [not related to chess just in general]). I was just throwing in my own $.02 that I don't think its a sport.

I don't think chess is an olympic sport is it? I could easily be wrong but i've never seen that televised lol

if people become olympians for chess thats kind of lame

Chinese chess kills me.
I played it a lot when I was younger and I never failed to lose every game.
I don't think (haha I fail at strategies) and remembering things like the Elephant can't cross the river or something like that(?) kills me.

The part of hitting when the ball comes to you hurts.

I hate ball-related sports. |: . They hurt. A lot.

Chess isn't an Olympic sport, but there are World Tournaments of chess.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_Olympiad

Just pointing something out here, but a sport for the brain is not lame compares to a sport for the brawl. Don't get me wrong, but it's not lame to be considered the top "Chess" or rather, "Strategist" player of the world :P

@ Azu yep, that's what I like about Chinese chess, the actual rules, giving the Strategist the excitement of planning a perfect trap very much like the old times battles ^^

nothing lame about being good at chess.

but I think you should have to put forth a level of excellence at athletics to become an Olympian.

I'm glad it's not an olympic sport, i've watched some of the world championships. I'm far from a chess hater, I just don't think it should have anything to do with Olympics.
