QFT. Sometimes I get tired of going over again and again why one of the wisest things to do in the world is to go to a Community College first before going to a 4-year University. Folks are blinded by the idea that someone is a big shot because they jumped to a 4-year school right away. Hence, you get kids like the kid in one of my classes who dropped out of a big college after two semesters because he couldn't control the urge to party instead of, you know, actually going to school.

as far as I understood, getting high education in a country like germany is pretty cheap. University in germany - 640$ (the fees I'll be paying to finish my german learning classes would be more expensive than that.......)
Compared to learning in a college like Berklee in Boston - 30,000$

Why is high education in the USA is so expensive?
I'd be lying if I said that the high education in Israel isn't expensive as well (5300$), but still it comes nowhere near the US.
Or can it be that I'm not understanding correctly, and the 30k is for a full program?

It was almost free once  >:(
In case you end up going to germany, where would you choose to study then? :p

And what's that Community collage? D:

Yeah, only 50 marks as far as I know.
It still is free (apart from the  administration fee, which is usually ≈60€) in some parts of Germany (Berlin, Brandenburg, Hesse, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Rhineland-Palatinate, Saarland, Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein, and Thuringia). You might even be eligible for bafög, as you're a German national.

Bingo.

Oh, and it goes to the greedy schools.

This is America, though. The fact that textbooks here are over $150 while they're like 75% less in other countries should be a good enough clue as to why American colleges are so expensive. And for what? The same education that you could get anywhere else, to be honest. I go to a community college and I can guarantee you I'm getting a better education there than I would if I went to a state college around here. At the very least, my Professor's aren't pompous asshats who think they're God's gift to what they teach, because in the long run people really care that you're spending a few hours a day telling people what happens in photosynthesis.
I go to a state collage myself. So far I got some really goo teachers in every course I gotten so far :)

a community collage is when a bunch of people get together and paste pictures on a giant piece of paper to make a giant picture!

but really, a community college is basically a cheaper college than a "normal" one, for in-state students. Depending on where you are though, community colleges can be sort of lackluster though, and depending on what college you're trying to transfer to later on (if you do transfer), some colleges don't accept some (or all) of your community college credits.

EXACTLY!!! ^^^
regular students, who go to college just for education purposes are paying so much to the school to support all the athletic programs they have....which i think is stupid... athletic programs get so much money just to get kids to play for them, while the rest of the kids are basically paying for the athletes to be there.

yes some money does go towards the actual school, but i'd have to say most goes to athletics and other programs like them

Uhm, you can't do college as home schooling.  Doesn't work that way.

mangaluva wrote:My mom told me that it's because colleges and universities in America often recieve no state funding; they're entirely privatized institutions. State colleges sometimes get funding, so they can be a little cheaper if you're from in-state, but they still cost. Whereas higher education in other countries is often heavily subsidized.

this is very true many times, my college is 40,000 a year, however they gave me 17,000 worth of scholarships due to my good grades and other stuff. then I took out a federal student loan for $5000 and then my parents pay  $18,000 a year (the average state run university is 20,000 a year, and the local community college (each county has one pretty much). you only need a High school diploma to attend a community college, then most people can get into a state university,  then people with good grades can get into a good  private school. then you have the IV league schools which are really hard to get into. I go to a college where most people end up going to graduate school or professional school (I hope to go to vet school), most companies look at where you graduated when you apply for a job or try for professional school. so for example even if I have a lower GPA then someone at a community college or possibly even a state university they are more likely to accept me because of my colleges prestige which they gained by working us harder and doing better in later classes because of how well they prepare us...I hate how hard they work us sometimes though.

The Ivy leagues and colleges at a similar level are running at 50,000+ for 9 month's tuition + room and board these days.
