I think we hate him because we don't know him. Shawn is the protagonist, we've followed him for four seasons and we're used to his silliness and his sense of humor, his quirky style. We empathize with him despite his inherent lies about being a psychic detective.

If say, we had watched Declan for four seasons, lying about how he's a criminal profiler and all of a sudden Shawn showed up with his silliness, I know I'd be a little less tolerant. Still, Declan needs to go away. I'm sure he will, eventually, like Abigail did.

She was a rather flat supporting character. Her only reason for being was to provide a distraction of sorts for Shawn and to extend the tension between Juliet and Shawn. Of course, as soon as Shawn is able to confess his feelings, Juliet is swept away.

As much as I love Shawn, I could smack him senseless.
