DC Specials Contest: 118 vs 490

Post by dilbertschalter »

In the last faceoff, "Clash of Red and Black" beat "Two Mysteries" without any difficulty. This time, we have a Heiji-centric battle with:

Episode 118: The Naniwa Serial Murder Case

vs

Episode 490: Hattori Heiji vs Kudo Shinichi, Deduction Showdown at the Ski Slope

The current bracket:

"The energies of our system will decay; the glory of the sun will be dimmed, and the earth, tideless and inert, will no longer tolerate the race which has for a moment disturbed its solitude. Man will go down into the pit, and all his thoughts will perish. The uneasy consciousness, which in this obscure corner has for a brief space broken the contented silence of the universe, will be at rest. Matter will know itself no longer. 'Imperishable monuments' and 'immortal deeds,' death itself, and love stronger than death, will be as though they had never been."

I might wake up early and go running. I also might wake up and win the lottery. The odds are about the same.

I need to re-watch these before I submit my vote, since I don't remember much from them.

Going with 118 here, both episodes were quite good, but 118 was a bit more gripping and has nice suspense aspects to it (the part where Conan and Heiji look for the woman who is about to be murdered is very creepy and well done). The more recent episodes just don't pack the same punch as far as nerves-inducingness goes. Also, episodes with Yusaku are annoying, because his character is lame.

that would be a surrender to the terrorists.

I wouldn't say that if I were you. He's more of a deus-ex machina detective than Conan when he wants to be and I genuinely wouldn't be surprised if he tried to murder you for saying that (despite him being a fictional character).

Anyway, 118 easily. 490 is awful for me as it has 2 pet peeves that I often hate.

1. Stupid "oh remember when these characters first met? Well they met a long time ago and didn't know!" moments. Mainly when they don't affect ANYTHING THAT HAPPENS IN THE SERIES IN ANY POSSIBLE WAY.
2. Trying to force characters to act exactly the same as other characters in order to make their characters less original, thus making me care less about them. (luckily, the keyword is "trying")

118 was a better case either way though. It also gets bonus points for that insane killer basically being a Chekhov...whatever.

118 by far, more suspense, more drama, more everything. 490 just falls flat.

118 A great Heiji episode with a lot of suspense and thrill. The part where Conan was stab was epic and the part where Heiji and Conan were trying to save the woman. Also the identity of the killer is well done and thought out!

490 is more like a normal case for me.

Easily 118. 490 is my least favorite special in the entire series.
